Awful awful, I was so excited to cater to a large office for lunch at 12pm. I stressed how time sensitive the order will be due to lunch hours for the employees. Zabar’s accepted the responsibility to create and deliver but unfortunately they dropped the ball. It is now 1245! Poorly run business, I’m sure their products are great for typical grocery shopping, but if you need to cater to a large group or host a special event, please please look else where. It was really embarrassing to use Zabar’s

RUDE. I didn’t even eat here. I was looking for some strudel to bring back to work. I went to the end of the counter(away from the register) since I saw a lady in the middle, so I thought I’d get«behind» her(if there was even a line). I said, excuse me? To a man behind the counter. «Can’t you see I’m busy? Go ask someone over there,» as he huffed and gestured toward the register. «They’re OBVIOUSLY not busy!» Um excuse me sir, you didn’t look very busy, either. In fact, everyone was pretty much standing around at that point. If he had been busy, can’t you just direct me to the counter without being so rude? I responded by saying that I wasn’t sure if there was a line, and I was just asking… He continued to be rude/brash and acted as if I broke some law by saying TWOWORDS to him. Plus, they barely had a selection of strudel that day. It’s fine if you run out, but the rudeness just left a bad taste in my mouth, especially given that directing me to get help from someone else doesn’t require one to be such a jerk. Won’t be back.

I cannot get over how fantastic the lox are from Zabar’s…a tie for 1st place in the city with downtown’s Russ and Daughters(perhaps even better). I was having a party at my home and ordered about $ 100 of goods from Zabar’s, mostly lox. A big pile of dill marinated gravlax with a side of dill sauce, and classic smoked nova. 4 days later I am still getting text messages from our guest about how fantastic this smoked fish was. The gravlax was so incredibly buttery with the perfect amount of fat to fish ratio. It truly melted in your mouth. While smoked nova typically isn’t my favorite, it was beyond delicious. We also ordered loaf of pumpernickel and two cream cheese fresh both of which were solid. In addition to the stellar product, the price point was right chiming in at a few dollars short per pound than competitors. My only qualm with the account was the delivery guy showing up about 30 minutes earlier than the intended window which left him with no tip as he had to leave the package at the door. I simply cannot wait to patronize Zabar’s more often and highly recommend it for catering your next big event.

Wow, I rarely complain and I’m not a food snob. But sorry the bagels are a huge disappointment. This is for the bakery store. Came here for their bagels, had them here in the early 90’s, Zabar is infamous for their bagels back then. Wow it has changed so much, very small bagels, I had the sesame and onion one. The chewyness of the dough is good but that was it. No flavor at all! And they don’t put the cream cheese on it ! You have to do it yourself. I did not know and opened up the bag in the car, no knives either. The bakery itself looks chaotic, the display of the knishes and bagels, muffins look disarray all mixed up and broken. Not appetizing at all. Service is slow and no smiles… The people who work there all look very miserable just like the bake goods. Depressing store. Very different from the past.

This review is for the deli only. I stopped by here to get a soup on my walk downtown. The place is small, tight, and busy but the wait isn’t long. They have many options for breakfast/lunch. The food itself was okay BUT the service is subpar. The staff here is rude and seems not to really care. Maybe I came here on an off day but probably won’t be coming back again.

By far the best challah I have ever had! Better than 2nd Ave, better than Kats, better than any other place’s challah! I buy it at least once a week and I don’t even live in the city anymore. In fact, I go out of my way just to get their challah. No clue about their other stuff, but the challah is amazing.

Zabar’s is an institution. IMO, there’s nothing better than a cup of coffee and cheese danish or muffin from Zabar’s. Their specialty foods are great. But I have to say, I was very disappointed w/their matzoh ball soup. How do you mess up Jewish penicillin, at this place?!?

The best and more affordable deli in Manhattan. Nothing goes wrong with Zaber’s. Great deli food and baked goods ready to be consumed along with European speciality products. The selection of cheese and Italian sausages is only breathtaking. The café next door is as nice, but only wish it were a little bigger. Given the popularity, the place is always packed with tourists and locals. Prices are lower compared to, for example, Wholefoods.

Babka bread, pastrami, smoked fish, and olives. This is classic NYC and very few do it better than Zabar’s. Prices are pretty average for the neighborhood and kosher deli/grocers. The staff is generally pleasant enough and despite being cramped and crowded at times, the lines move steadily(although the deli counter is pretty slow). If you are going to do the tourist thing on the UWS, your visit isn’t complete unless you make a visit to Zabar’s.

This place got me addicted to chocolate babkas! It’s so moist, chewy, and chocolatey. SOOOGOOD with a cup of hot coffee or tea. It keeps well and still really good after a few days, just make sure you keep the bag closed tightly. Their smoked sable fish was also really good… i really didnt even need to put it on anything. it was smokey, not fishy at all, and really moist and tender… i just ate it by itself and i polished off half a pound by myself! The smoked trout pâté was really good with crackers or bagels. Wish I had more time in NY… i woulda eaten so much more. I already signed up for the online subscription for the babka! :)

We came to sit down for breakfast and I have to say that although my expectations were high, I was still exceptionally impressed with both the service and the food. I had a reuben panini which had corned beef(the decent American kind, obviously not the British variant) with Russian dressing and sauerkraut on a rosemary panini. Firstly, the size of the thing — I could have been quite happy with half of what I got for the same price but was obviously very happy that I had the larger size. The panini was delicious with just amazing corned beef — the stuff of dreams from a Jewish deli on the Upper West Side in NYC. I know I’m never going to be able to go near a reuben now that I’ve had this. The bread itself was also quite the star as it had loads of rosemary — because you might as well actually deliver what you’re saying is in the sandwich! I had this with a bottle of orange juice, which was also good. Service was good — once we ordered, we got ushered along to the till so we didn’t have to wait behind a group of indecisive tourists. The seats clear out pretty quick with the majority of them around one communal table. Probably the funniest thing was that they were out of raisin bagels — and about one in three people wanted one. So many disappointed New Yorkers, :sad face: But I didn’t care as I was sitting there enjoying my panini, which has sadly probably made ever other panini I now eat not seem nearly as good as they would have before.

We went both to the sit-down food part and then had a look around the actual grocery store. In the food section, I had a great value toasted onion bagel with cream cheese($ 1.75). It was really tasty, with onion on both the bottom and the top. The cream cheese was exceptional, and the whole bagel was more than I could eat and kept me filled up to lunch. I had really wanted to love the grocery section and if I lived in NY, I would probably give it 5*. Unfortunately a lot of the things were packaged up just too large for a few days visit, or a picnic in the park, for just 2 people. But the variety of cheeses, meats, breads, etc was impressive.

The quality of bagels here has gone way down since I was a kid. Don’t get me wrong, they’re still pretty decent, but lacking that super soft texture I remember from childhood. The lines can be really long and we won’t even get into how absurd they are when you call for a catering order– can’t get anyone on the phone, forgot to include my plates/utensils/napkins. If you need a quick bagel on the UWS, I’d probably recommend these, but further downtown and in other areas of the city you can get way better quality. It makes me long for the UWS H&H days.

Ratatouille on a pastry puff is killer! The crust is so buttery and flacky. The ratatouille is so well flavored. I had the giner poundcake, brownie and raspberry square and I didn’t think it was worth $ 4.50 each. This place had a lot of tasty treat. It grotesquely over priced.

So I don’t think you can officially count yourself as a true New Yorker until you’ve been to Zabar’s. Places like this don’t exist anymore — you kind of feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you enter Zabar’s. You’ll see an older clientele in here and it probably has to do with the quality. I can’t even begin to describe all the different kinds of cheeses, breads and meats… and there’s way more than that. The two times I’ve been here, I’ve actually been too overwhelmed to pick out anything to buy. I’ve opted instead to get food from the prepared food counter — everything from fish to meatballs to paella — all excellent. Do not forget to get some pastries or sweets — I got a bag of these yummy cinnamon rolls and I was eating them for a week. If you’re looking to become a true New Yorker or need to grab something for a picnic in Central Park, Zabar’s is where you need to go.

Zabar’s Café is a place to get a quick breakfast on the go, a cup of Zabar’s famous coffee, delicious smoothie, hot grilled panini, cappuccino and sweets all in one place. So, even though there are not huge amounts of seats, one will open up pretty quickly. Affordable, quick, and pretty good menu selection to choose from. I have been a customer of Zabar’s for a very long time, both via their online order system as well as a couple of stop ins at their physical location at 80th and Broadway in Manhattan. I just got on their website this morning to order my Dad a gift for father’s day when it struck me that I really should take the time to write them a review. I was initially introduced to Zabar’s from my older brother who frequently orders coffee from them. After sharing a cup with him and commenting on how great it was one Christmas morning, that set in motion a chain of events that has been a very wonderful(albeit expensive) customer relationship spanning the last 5 years. Zabar’s is the quintessential, old school Jewish deli, and they do it right! You would be hard pressed to find such a great selection of gourmet foods almost anywhere, and the attention to detail is glaringly apparent. Their house blend and Blue Mountain coffee is roasted in house and is a staple of my AM existence. You will nearly always find a couple of pounds in my freezer. It’s extremely aromatic and satisfying. If you try a cup you will never be able to drink Starbucks ever again without feeling like you have been cheated. It would take me forever to go over all of the items they sell which I enjoy, so I will boil it down to a few of my absolute favorites. If you like smoked salmon, you MUST try it here, as it is the best I have been able to find anywhere. I like it on a bagel in the AM with some cream cheese. Simply fabulous. Another couple of standouts from the baked foods section of the store is the chocolate babka and cinnamon rugelach. I order these almost every year at Christmas since my Mom absolutely adores it. Some of my friends always joke with me during the holiday season and ask me if I have converted Jewish since I am rocking hanukkah pastries. After they try them, they shut up quickly. The deli meats are wonderful, but admittedly very expensive. It costs a small fortune to have these overnighted to me in one of their chill containers. However, the fact that I am willing to pony up the cash anyway despite the high cost should give you some indication of how outstanding it is. The corned beef is a particular standout. Rounding out the deli side, the cheese selection here is off the hook. I have yet to see it equaled anywhere on the planet. Try the Old Amsterdam or Leerdammer on a cracker and you will be in heaven. If you pay a visit to the store’s brick and mortar location, they have a small adjacent café that does an outstanding panini as well as several homemade soups. These are great to grab on the fly so you can have a makeshift picnic in nearby Central Park. Zabar’s is a great option for sending gift boxes and baskets to friends, family, coworkers, etc. They have a wide selection for all occasions and they are sure to be a big hit with the recipient. My Dad, however, already knows the drill from the last several father’s days, so he would probably be upset if he did not receive a box from Zabar’s. That is the only problem with setting the bar incredibly high I suppose. If you plan to send one during high volume times like Christmas, Mother’s Day, Valentine’s etc. you should not wait until the last minute. They get crazy busy with orders during these times, so just be like me and use your phone to send a reminder a week prior and you are good to go. Lastly, Zabar’s has a wide selection of kitchen accessories that puts most high end department stores to shame. It is located on the second floor. If you are anything like me, it will be nearly impossible for you to leave without a couple of items in hand. They sell a limited amount of kitchenware items online also via their website. I have really only scratched the surface of all the foodie heaven items that can be found here, but I will leave it to you to explore based on your particular tastes. Consequentially, I live in Chicago, which is not exactly devoid of decent deli’s by any stretch of the imagination. Zabar’s blows them all away.
