Overall the menu sticks to the classics of southern comfort food which are all executed fairly well. We had the fried chicken which was tasty and very juicy as well as the shrimp and grits. The shrimp and grits was heavy on other ingredients that overwhelmed the grits too much. I would have given this place for stars if it weren’t for the small portions. For $ 21 I expect a bit more than two small pieces of chicken and a mini salad. The shrimp and grits portion size was also tiny. A great meal if you are almost already full to begin with.

You can’t go wrong with their fried chicken. It is juicy and crisp, and the iceberg salad it comes with is perfect to balance it. The burger was also solid. Skip the pretzels and bread though. Plus they gave you free cookies. Great place.

Came here on a Wednesday night for a double date after a hectic day, excited to try some comfort food. My bf and I got the fried chicken and shrimp and grits to share. Portion size was disappointing, $ 20 for a plate of chicken with only two pieces of chicken on it should be size able for that price but I guess not here. The flavor was nice, well seasoned and wasn’t overly greasy. No corn bread on the side :(Came with a wedge salad, it was alright. Apparently they don’t do watermelon salad anymore(maybe), didn’t think I was missing anything there though. My shrimp and grits was very tasty but it didn’t feel like I was eating grits. More like flavorful semi soup with texture. And the portion size again, very disappointing. Overall, I felt like I was eating whitewashed southern food, I didn’t leave with that feeling of I probably shouldn’t have eaten that but it was worth it, if anything I left kinda hungry still. Too many great SoCo restaurants in NY to feel that way. Probably won’t be back but I liked that they give you a complimentary gingerbread cookie at the end, very delicious. Eat it slowly and savor every bite, it goes quick!

Clearly like most went here because of DDD. I visited family NYC for Christmas. Fried chicken is as good as everyone says. We also had another recommendation which was something with grits and sausage and a flatbread with pastrami and some other stuff which was also good. A bit pricey but it’s NYC fair. I grew up in NY and we have nothing like this in LA. I been to other places the city and been disappointed. Would definitely go back but prob just for the fried chicken.

The duck and andouille gumbo was OUTOFTHISWORLD! The shrimp and grits and the fried chicken were also amazing. I highly recommend this place. Check it out!

Impressively simple and delicious. We were a group of five that took the«feast» menu. Foodies all, not a complaint was heard as the chief’s choices were served and shared. Fried chicken was my entrée. It met and exceeded any expectation. Other positive reviews here on Unilocal have described the chicken more aptly. The one amongst us that questioned the wisdom of «peanut bacon brittle» was the first to say«OMG that is good» One out of five thought the Bourbon Ice Cream was weak. no one else that tasted it agreed or disagreed. the only«flat-line» opinion of the night. Suggestion: Tasted and see for yourself. The IPA beer is delicious and every drink consumed was a delightful accompaniment! 10 thumbs up for this experience. Service too was near flawless, fun and engaging!

I must have overdosed on their bacon peanuts cus its that GOOOD! wow such good munchies. It’s been about 2 years since i was last here and decided to be back again as my friends and i likes to go to places in the city for our monthly fried chicken dinners. We came in on a thursday night with only reservations made that same day. Pleasant visit and we got seated right away! It was a bit cramped in at a corner table but considering such last minute booking i did not mind at all. For some reason i think their menu may have gotten smaller or it could just be that i dont remember much. To start for the 3 of us we got the pretzel app(which was real good), bacon peanuts(my fave) and als the cornbread which was super fluffy as well! Main course we all came for the fried chicken so all 3 of us got the fried chicken entre which came with 2 pieces 1 dark and 1 white meat and some cabbage salad on the side. It was $ 20 for this. A bit steep. The salad was alright, quite greasy and for the chicken. i am a dark meat person so I personally liked the drumstick part a lot more. it was more juicy and fatter. While the breast(white meat) was very dry… i did not like this one as much. i can tell that they marinated their batter and such cus the crisp and skin were really good. Although I would not say this is the best fried chicken I’ve ever had but i give it a 4 out of 5 stars in my book with rooms to work on. Overall I had a great time and would come back but maybe try other things next time. Their drink menu looks interesting too. Also to end the night they gave us a piece of cookie to go which i thought was very sweet!

Meh. No great shakes here. This is basically an average watering hole in the East Village. Came in this past Saturday around 11p and the place was maybe 1⁄3 full. Crowd seemed a little seedy, but I enjoyed the low lighting a little bit more for this. This is a small little bar with some seating towards the back. The redhead served up a late night«bar» menu which we took part in. Not bad quality but quantity is a little scarce considering what they charge. We took a pastrami flatbread which was pretty tasty $ 13(serving for 1), and a cheese burger $ 14(slider sized) and we opted for the +$ 4.00 add on for potato tots(there were 6 of them). Drinks were strong and reasonably priced, but try to get a second round. The only bartender in the place kept disappearing into the bathroom with various clientele, which was odd because the bathroom is a single unisex toilet for one. Anyway there are way too many bars in the city and not enough attraction here to make a special return visit. Maybe recommend trying once?

Cool little spot. The late night menu is pretty great. Not one thing disappointed. the Chickpea and Kale fries are pretty amazing. I would love to be able to recreate them. The pretzel with beer cheese was a nice little snack option. Very flavorful and fresh pretzel. The bacon nut brittle is an addicting bowl of delicious(they sell bags of it to take home, too). Although we didn’t order it, the fried chicken is something they’re super well known for and is supposed to be amazing. I didn’t taste the flatbread, but it comes with an egg on top and has layers of meat and sliced beet on top with aioli mayo type of sauce dotted on the squares. Mellow atmosphere, good mix of wines/beers/liquors, and nice staff.

The Redhead can safely look at all the plucky fried chicken upstarts in the EV today and go «look ‘ere sonny, we dis fried chick’n ‘fore it was ‘ere a thing». And it’s probably true… before the Redhead, there was only KFC. And even when they started, I’m sure plenty of folks probably balked at the prospect of paying $ 20 for fried chicken(I know I probably did 6 years ago… my how times have changed). But now sadly, an old institution must make way for better, younger, fresher chickens. The kind of chickens that wear skinny jeans and thick plastic glasses. The kind of chickens that look at your profile, smirk, then swipe left. Know what I mean? Millennial chickens… I still quite enjoyed my meal here. It was nostalgic to say the least, but in the end, I thought the sides were more interesting than the main itself, especially the chickpea fries. It’s still a lovely place. Great atmosphere, great vibe… good for a drink, but not the place I’d go to in the EV anymore for fried bird.

For a place named after a ginger, this place overdelivered the hell out of some soul food. We started with the delicious soft pretzel with beer cheese. I’m a huge fan of pretzels, and beer, and cheese, and I strongly enjoyed the combination. Your next question is whether they had amazing Andouille. And of course the answer is yes! It had shrimp and sausage and came with grits and I didn’t want it to end. Finally, the reason you’re here: fried chicken. Of course it’s delicious, it’s fried chicken. But it’s also delicious compared to ANY other fried chicken I’ve ever had. Step aside fast food, these guys do it right. Bonus: their bread was delightful.

Went to try this place for the first time last night. The place itself is small but cozy. There is no waiter service after a certain time but the bartender was great. She was handling the bar all by herself and she was quick and friendly. The food was just okay. A bit pricey for what it is. I ordered the fried chicken and it’s 20.00 for only 2pieces with an iceberg wedge salad. Seriously 2 pieces with iceberg for 20?! That’s a little pricey. You could go to blue ribbon and get 3 pieces for 25.50 and that comes with collard greens and mash potatoes. Just saying. The flatbread was a bit bland and i would prefer it without the beets. Also the dip flavor could use more onion flavor. The homemade tater tots were good but definitely not worth 4 dollars for the amount they give you. It was like 6 pieces. How much do potatoes cost?!

Grits or chicken. Chicken or grits. Bring a friend and order both! Porchswing vs. Red Fizz? I personally liked the porchswing because it was minty, lemony, and quite refreshing. Thumbs up for the drink size options. Happy hour just got happier! The bartender was friendly and he made sure everyone felt welcomed once they stepped through the door. He is, like what the other patron said, the man!

$ 5 glass of wine for HH? YES! HH offers 5 – 6 bar eats and 5 – 6 drink options. A friend and I ordered(pardon me for not remembering the exact names) the«bacon peanuts», «kale fries», «pretzels», and glasses of Cab. The server was very attentive and nice, the red velvet seats were quite sexy and comfortable, and the ambiance was nice. I saw a gentleman order their chicken & waffles and it smelled like heaven on a plate.

It’s been a while since I visited the Redhead, and it’s the first time that I’ve felt like I’ve had to update a review. Had dinner here recently, and it was a pretty disappointing experience. It took about 5 minutes before someone actually greeted me, and I stood at the door looking for someone to seat us. We weren’t allowed to get seated until the entire party arrived, which even applied for parties of 2. The hostess was very adamant about the policy, despite the place being half empty. Okay, fine. Moving on. We decided not to get drinks since it was a little early, and because of that, our waiter took about 20 minutes to finally take our food order. After that, he was also incredibly aloof and nowhere to be found throughout the meal. The friendliness of the service here was never the strong suit to begin with, and this visit only confirmed that. Also, I get that prices are bound to increase, due to market forces, inflation, etc., but $ 20 for two pieces of fried chicken and a small wedge of watermelon is borderline highway robbery. The fried chicken was fine, but a little on the rubbery side. The dish used to come with grits, and at $ 19, it was still a little steep, but now without the grits, it’s just plain expensive. Oy vey. Whatever little value that was there, is just gone now. The whole experience really turned me off, and I’m sad to see the huge dropoff in service and food quality. I can’t see myself coming back or recommending it.

My friend recommended this place to me. Not a big fan. We had the Bacon Peanut Brittles, not my cup of tea. And it just taste really… fry. I had the Redhead Buttermilk fried chicken and my date had Low Country Shrimp. And of course the busboy didn’t even bother to ask and put the fried chicken in front of my date who is African-American. The fried chicken paired with water melon are just icing on the top in this situation…

My colleagues and I came to the redhead after work and had a good time dinner. There was a short wait for a table at around 8pm, but we were seated after about 10 minutes. I had the rosé, and it was served in a pretty small glass. It was also almost the color of white wine, but I was informed it was just a pale rosé. It was tasty, but not my favorite. We had the soft pretzels and the bacon peanut brittles to start. The pretzels and accompanying cheese were a hit for the whole table. The brittles were good but didn’t have enough bacon flavor. I had the fried chicken which was absolutely fantastic. The watermelon with the smoked almonds was a strange combo that I didn’t think worked. Colleagues had bacon cheeseburgers, and while the burgers were yummy, the up charge for the tots was a little cray considering there were only like 6 tots. I was told the shrimp and grits was delicious. Service was okay, if a little disinterested. We had finished our meal and drinks and had to wave our server down to get the check after waiting about 10 minutes. I’m not sure that I’d be back unless a friend specifically wanted to try it.

My boyfriend chose The Redhead for dinner over the weekend because he knows I love fried chicken. I’ve never heard of it before(I have a list of places on my radar accumulated through Unilocal of course), so it was interesting to me that he chose this place. We ordered the fried chicken dinner with the watermelon slice to share and we also split the pretzel appetizer. The pretzel with their special butter thing was okay, kinda salty for the size. The fried chicken was good, not great. Also on the salty side but still super moist and crunchy. The place has a cool bar vibe to it since that’s the primary goal. Like a fun gastropub with good fried chicken. It’s a winning combo. Drinks, music and crunchy fried chicken.

Put some NOLA in your face! Great authentic experience of a great hole-in-the-wall meets all comers Cajun bar. The juxtaposition of nicely attired families eating crawfish for mother’s day and local waiter/worker staff heading over here for their lunch break eating chicken and waffles at the bar is as authentic as it gets. The crawdaddys were all pretty fresh, Abita of every variety(and none skunked which seems even harder to do outside of the south than get fresh crawfish), and a mean Sazerac. The fried kale chips seemed a little off(requisite LES addition?) but otherwise the menu is all Bayou. The quarters are indeed a tad tight, the place gets loud, and water/beer tends to get throw a good bit around the bar, but that comes with the territory and atmosphere. My favorite part? The bar staff who are having a great time, being jovial and social, talk your ear off, and love playing their best brass band mix over the loudspeakers(don’t worry it ain’t second line loud).

After hanging with a bunch of friends for drinks in the area we decided to grab a bite to eat. Using the Unilocal ap we discovered The Redhead and called. They were able to hook us up with a table for six with only a minimal wait. As it’s not a large place it was pretty packed, but that was to be expected since this seems to be a popular joint in the hood. Can be a bit cramped for seating as we discovered but they mad eit work for us. It was so dark in here I could hardly read the menu. Had to go with the fried chicken which was pretty decent compared to many I have had throughout the city, and the cocktails were strong. Always a plus in my book. Was underwhelmed with the bacon peanut brittle. Not worth the price. I don’t get what everyone sees in this small bowl of peanuts that barely tasted like bacon. So disappointed. Our group also decided to order one of each dessert because we’re a bunch of piggies. Hey, don’t judge! I had the baked alaska which was pretty killer. That’s an old school dessert you don’t see too often. Made quite well here. Took a spoonful of the others on the table that were good but kind of forgettable. As I am a whiskey fan we also decided to try the hot cocoa with Jameson. Figured this would be a good fit on a cold night. Now, I enjoy drinking Jameson but«holy blackout drunk Batman» this was waaaaaayyyyyy too much booze. It was like drinking a full mug of Jameson with about 10% hot cocoa. Had to sip this one as no way was I chugging it. The giant marshmallow floating in it was pretty cool though. Service was fine overall. The waiter took care of us, and the food came out quick enough. I think our major complaint is that the place seems a bit overpriced for the quailty of the food and drinks served here. I might be willing to go back again to give it another try as there are some good things going on here, but if we could offer half stars I would give The Redhead a 2.5, but round it up to 3 as the system here only allows full star ratings.
