Excellent dive bar and very cheap alcohol. only negative is that they don’t serve food. Nice place to play pool and darts as well. but ensure you don’t go on a dart competition day. it gets too crowded then

New favorite bar to «pregame» before a concert. Service at the bar was great, checking on us constantly to see if we needed anything(many of the other bars in the area you have to beg for attention and get ignored). Unlike many of the other bars in the area the exterior is white washed giving it an open, airy feeling instead of that dark dive feeling(like Blaramey Rock across the street). There is a large space in the back that could act as a dance floor. Great place to meet you group of friends before or after a show at MSG!

Excellent place to have a drink and watch a game. Very friendly bartender. No food but they are ok with you bringing stuff in. NY Pizza Supreme is a good choice. Good place to wait for a Tripper bus. I’ll be back.

I usually try to avoid the blocks surrounding Penn Station, but I ended up here with some colleagues after work here. We were all hungry for some basic bar food, nothing special, but had to order food from the pizza place next door because the Tempest doesn’t serve food. The crowd here was unlike any of the bars I usually frequent, and consisted mainly of the cursing, loud, overly drunk type(aka what you’d expect from a dive bar). The Halloween decorations were out in full force, and I appreciated the effort. I also like the dart board and the pool table, both of which my colleagues and I took advantage of.

My girlfriend works for an events company and they brought a group of around 50 people to this bar. She asked the waitress for a cup of water seeing as she was tired from running around chauferring these people all day. The waitress asked to see an ID. My girlfriend told her that she didn’t have her wallet with her as she was working but she only wanted tap water-not alcohol. The waitress, who later identified herself as the owner, told her she needs to leave the bar. Then proceeded to YELL at her telling her she could not be there and she was the owner and she needed to leave this instant! Maybe it’s just me but I find it ridiculously bad practice to refuse to serve someone who just brought you 50 patrons a glass of WATER and proceed to try and eject her from the bar causing her to not be able to fulfil her job and cater to the event companies patrons. Seriously… over a measly glass of water. Disgusting.

bullshit bar. paid $ 30 for juke box and as soon as our songs started playing, they turned the music all the way down. We asked the bartender about it and she said that there was some impromptu cult board game swingers night and they had asked her to turn the music.

Know what Tempest Bar is before you walk in. Or right away when you do. It’s not a dive bar, but it’s an old school beer and shot Irish bar. If this is not your scene, then fine, no problem. If you do get it, then this is one of the most love-able bars in the city. This place has become my West side home. Pre game or post game for rangers games, for a quick gargle before a train ride or just anytime I’m in the vicinity. If Patrick the bartender doesn’t open to you with welcoming arms, Joe the owner surely will…

Great pub, you don’t find many NYC Pubs/Dive Bars that have that old school feel. Great drinks, great bartenders and happy hour all night! Pool Table and Tempest arcade game, rocks.

I’m not the best person to write on bars but the people I went with had no issues here. It wasn’t all that happening when we went but they did have a happy hour special on New Year’s Eve and the cosmo I had was pretty good. One of my companions ended up chatting with another customer about the music of Meat Loaf so that was interesting.

Visited this place on our last night because it was close to our hotel in NYC and not impressed. Liquor is watered down! Be sure to drink only beer. Jukebox mix is suspect with ton of 80’s. Old ladies running around dancing on poles. Wow! Not a good look.

Went here with some coworkers for drinks on a Thursday night. Pretty good service, friendly bartenders. Had to wait about 30min to get on the dart board but was fun once it was clear. Prices are reasonable. They have tvs with sports on, caught some of the knicks game. They have a good jukebox too. Overall pretty cool bar, good if you like pool or darts, and fairly cheap drinks.

What a great dive bar. Excellent prices Pool tables. Really nice service! Big long bar, not too packed. Great for anyone looking for a place to straight up drink near the cultural void that is Penn Station area. My new favorite spot in the area for an after work beer.

After a horrible day, this place welcomed me with open arms like a lost child finally found. It is a surprisingly clean place which is not what one expects walking in. It wasnt too packed but thé crowd was friendly. I had a horrible day so I started off with shots and some beers. Seeing a lovely lady drinking alone with a frown was probably what prompted thé bartender to buy me a drink or two. Two shots of Patron and 2 beers were about $ 27 before tip. Staff here is very nice. I walked out and forgot my pretty expensive shoes on a hook by thé bar. When I réalized this and was walking back thé bartender was outside looking to see if he could catch me. Awesome! Bathrooms are large, sufficiently clean, and stocked.

Came here for a birthday party one Saturday night and it was awesome! There was a DJ spinning hip-hop, and we were dancing our butts off to hits from the ‘90s to today. I see that Unilocal has«Good for Dancing: No» for this place; maybe this kind of party was a rare occasion? But I guess this means you could coordinate with the manager/owner to host a fun event. Drinks were good and cheap, and the bartenders were attentive and friendly. They have a back room where you can also hang out. We kept our coats in there and ate food that we brought in.

The Tempest Bar is just south of Penn Station /Madison Square Garden and is a bit of an enigma. At times it is packed and rocking. Others there is no one in the bar. The staff is efficient up to a point and can handle a larger crowd. They also have a nice set up for darts. There are a few dart boards against the back wall and a separate room that has dart boards in it also. There is a group that plays darts there often. I have never eaten here and i don’t think they have food. Short of times when I want to play darts I think there are better options in the area. It’s not that there is anything wrong with Tempest it’s just that there is no compelling reason to go there either.

Fell into Tempest Bar with my Local 46 night crew after stumbling out of Billymark’s West. As far as dives go, this place is slightly less divey than average and certainly not as small. Shots. Beers. More drunken billiards with strangers. They have a TV on the wall too. The World Cup Soccer games were on. There was music too but I was too wasted to know whether it was satellite radio or if there was a jukebox somewhere in the joint. A good time was had by all.

Shitty/awesome dive with lots of construction worker type dudes right after 5pm. Around 6pm is when I usually visit simply because the beer is cheap and the atmosphere is great. Never packed. Good deals shitty music and weak AC. Great dive! Not being sarcastic here. Seriously. Good place

This is a new one for me: giving 5 stars to a bar that does not even remotely deserve on paper. I’ve got two words for you: World Cup. Chances are if you work in the neighborhood, you’ve passed this place many times unawares that it even exists. Outside it looks like a typical Irish pub with its standard awning font and a sidewalk chalkboard placed sheepishly close to the entrance. Readying for the World Cup and chary of bro-bars crowded with bandwagon hoppers, my co-worker and I were jokingly considering the most objectionable bars on 8th Avenue’s barren promenade of lost hopes and forgotten dreams(you know the one, near Penn Station). Well, that’s what I get for my snooty attitude! Inside we were actually met with a friendly bartender, chill set of regulars, and total heaven in the back with large-screen TVs plastered on quaint brick walls and over their surprising fireplace. What they lack in beer selection(Shiner Bock and Goose Island IPA is as adventurous as it gets), they make up for in friendly and generous bartenders. The owner is a mensch, too, pumping up the U.S. and high-fiving patrons every chance he gets. There’s no food, but it’s BYO, so you can bring in Pizza Suprema or Pio Pio Riko from next door, or even Seamless like we did yesterday. It’s been so perfect for daytime games that I hesitate to share my «discovery.» There were only a handful of people – and I mean handful! – there for the after-work Ghana game, and only a few extra randoms to see U. S-Germany! I wouldn’t be surprised if a few extra folks discover Tempest as a result of this summer’s soccer madness. I will surely continue to walk through its doors into mid-July!

Yep we are calling this a dive bar! $ 4 Coors Light and Tempest Lagers, $ 5 shots. Had a few«Sea Monkeys» floating in our draft beers but they were quickly replaced in clean glasses. Still, EWWWWW! Bar is long and dim but felt welcoming. The bathrooms were clean enough. The bartender was a Russian chick who was very friendly and dealt with being hit on by my friend quite gracefully. There is NOFOOD here so we ordered from a nearby place and ate it at the bar, which is encouraged. The bartender brought us a binder of menus of nearby places for this purpose. We ended up probably doing one too many shots and our tab ended up being very high for a dive bar, but we had a good time. Make this a stop if you’re waiting for a train at Penn.
