For some reason I am not absolutely crazy about this place. I have been living in Harlem for 2 years and never did grocery shopping here. One day I happen to be hopping of the D train at 145 and didn’t feel like going ALLTHEWAYTOFAIRWAY and so I decided to give Super Foodtown a try. I don’t know what threw me off when I walked in. Maybe the long lines you see as soon as you walk in and then presents a constant reminder while you are shopping that you will be waiting in line forever with your little 5 items. The carry alot of the major common brands that you would expect to see unlike some of their competitors in the neighborhood like Key Foods and Fine Fare. Their layout is pretty simple to follow. At 4:30 on a weekday it was crazy busy and it was hard to find employees if you were needing any type of help. I waited in the express lane for at least almost 10 minutes and I am not exaggerating. All in all it wasn’t a terrible experience but it wasn’t great experience that made me want to become a regular.

Newly opened! — Super Foodtown of Harlem has done a real good job of restocking a Pathmark supermarket that had been on this site for more than a decade. Pathmark, unfortunately, had become a casualty of its parent company A&P’s, untimely bankruptcy last summer. Foodtown, employing the already existing staff in the store, has managed to reopen this supermarket and get it up and running just in time for the year end holiday food shopping season. No easy task! And while I’m not familiar with Foodtown supermarkets, I’m glad that a deal could be worked out to keep a much needed large supermarket on this site to service the surrounding community. I only hope that Foodtown will be able to build the loyal customer base that Pathmark enjoyed for many years in Harlem. Even though, they’ve promised to eventually have lower prices than Pathmark, so far I haven’t seen any sales in their weekly circular that rival those of its predecessor. However, I have noticed that their fruits and vegetables are fresher and lower priced than at Pathmark. And their deli is now selling Boar’s Head premium meats and cheeses. Also, they now have a dedicated aisle for organic foods. I’m not sure if they will eventually settle on being open 24 hours a day, since I’ve seen them close at different times like 11pm, or 1am even though their circular reads 12 midnight. I, of course, wish this store much success and plan to keep shopping here over the next few months to see how things work out. I will update my review later on when things become clearer.
