Went there on Sunday and it appears to be a Turkish restaurant in that spot now.

This place should be closing soon. The service was beyond bad as there were only two people(both were from South/Central America). They were courteous but without additional help they could only feel sorry for us. The Buffet was not even re filled as these two were preparing other orders from the menu as well. The food was not great as well. I think the owners do not care or they have too much money… I will not go there again and do not recommend for others to go.

Went for takeout. Most of the food in the buffet has an odd taste to it… as though there’s something in the water. It’s the same taste in all the dishes. I ordered the Bhel Puri but it was soggy and almost no discenable poori. The vada pav was good, but again the same odd flavor as in all the food. Bought some jalebis… which were good, but perhaps too greasy though the Badam Patty was really good. The place is cleaner than when I visited it 3 years ago when there were flies everywhere and the staff used bare hands to pick the sweets. Would I go there again? Only if I had too… not happy with the quality of food, and it seems the staff is too eager to tell you what you want to hear if you have a question about allergies.

I was recommended to this place by ny magazine best sandwich list… the vegetarian sandwich(not sure if it’s the same one advertised in ny mag) but it was good!!! Very spicy, cheap and filling! I also ordered a mango sossi(Indian smoothie), it came up to less than $ 7.i’ll be coming here more often during my lunch hour.

This restaurant was good when it opened years ago. Not so now. Food is just ok. Chaat items are no where comparable to the chaat items available in Manhattan today. Buffet items were greasy and oily. But the catch is that the same items cost much more higher after 5 pm. The staff will not tell you that and the price mentioned on their menu will reflect the discounted price. You will get a sticker shock when you get the check. The cleanliness and food handling in the food preparation area leaves a lot to be desired. Overall not a good experience.

Sukhadias may have a great reputation for their sweets but their lunch buffet is a disaster ! Cold unheated food — with indifferent service. No one cared to give us any kind of direction at all. We could have walked out without paying our bill and no one would have known or cared ! Terrible — best avoided ! I wonder why the owners would bother with the high Manhattan rents if they are choosing to utterly neglect their lunch buffets !

We went there on a Friday night thinking that it was a renowned Indian chain. However, when we entered the restaurant, it was deserted except for a waiter who was listening to his ipod! We waited on our table for 10 – 15 mins for the waiter to come with the menu. However, he did not care. So we just left. This was the worst experience in a restaurant! I dont know how the food is. However, I would never recommend going to this place.

really, a big-time bummer! after reading about how wonderful this place is on some blog — — i was psyched that we had tickets to a show 10 blocks away and decided it was worth getting there early and walking the 20 block round trip hike to check out Sukhadia. . except. we were there 40 mins after the sign on the door said they open, and they weren’t open. the doors were locked, there was some movement inside but nobody came to the door. if someone had come to the door and told us «sorry we arent open right now even though the sign says we are» it would have been better than standing outside pulling on a locked door after walking 10 blocks . if i am in the neighborhood again i may try once more, but im not going out of my way.

Not the greatest buffet, but read on to see why this all-vegetarian lunch buffet(at $ 10.95) gets 4 fly stars: (1) good variety between your usual standbies(cabbage, great potatoes that are not too oily, your saag paneer, etc.) and some unusual items — chaat and these ravioli like things, etc. (2) water is right on your table, so need to wait. (3) two types of naan — no way! (4) the best part — of course — the sweeties!!! And I mean the SWEETYOGURTLASSI as part of the buffet and the delicious mango dessert. YESS!!! So for this, you would want to go back again and again. I would have loved to go to the sweets counter with an expert, but alas, another time.

Very poor service. Food was so salty that I just stopped eating, paid my bill and left. Filled up on the lassi, which was actually very good. Had the lunch buffet. I didnt realize that I could have ordered from the menu. The waiter only spoke Spanish and didnt have a clue what was going on. The Indian people in the restaurant didnt really speak to me(though i am Indian!). Weird. Wont waste my money here again.

This establishment is a bit dark-lit when you walk in and felt a bit dreary. Near the back, there are about 15 tables to sit at. The ambiance was not very appealing and I was a bit disappointed, but I reminded myself I was here for some Indian eats. They had a lunch buffet for $ 10.95, which was only a handful of dishes. We took a peek at the dishes which didn’t look too appetizing, so my friend and I grabbed a seat to order from their menu. We ordered several dishes, names I was not able to recognize or pronounce, but there was one dish that was extremely good, Bhel Poori for $ 5. Most of their dishes are small and are more for the taste testing rather than to get really full. You can always order several small dishes to try a little of everything. I was pleased with all the dishes that my native friend ordered. Food was fresh, some had the perfect spices. I was not disappointed in any of the 3 – 4 dishes we had ordered. Service was a bit lacking as the waiter never came by to refill our glasses of water. When we had to pay the bill, I asked the waiter if we could get some change and he had informed me to go to the front. I went to the front, and the guy just ignored me and took the customers who were waiting to pay for their food. I thought this was a bit rude, as I was just as in a rush to get out to get back to work. He finally asked what he can do for me, and I asked for a change for $ 20. He said he did not have any change for a $ 20, which I find rather odd because what will he do with all the customers who come in with $ 20 bills. Anyhow, I spoke to the guy for a few minutes about how he was going to give us change for our meal, and he just shrugged his shoulders. In all, we decided to just charge our meal to save the time of dealing with the guy shortchanging us or miraculously coming up with the correct amount of change later. In all, the food was decently good, service was very bad, and the ambiance was not at all that appealing. Does the food save this place from disaster? Possibly, which is the only reason why I will give it 3 stars.

Above average Gujarati vegetarian food. Be forewarned though– the takeout buffet at $ 4.99 a pound is a terrible deal and you’ll walk out paying $ 15 bucks when you could’ve paid less a la carte. So skip that and go for the regular buffet or eat in at dinner. But the star of the show when you see the name«Sukhadia» is the sweets. Sukhadia’s sweetmaking business has its roots back in India in the state of Gujarat, and they brought their business here originally to Edison, NJ and now they’ve got their restaraunt in Midtown. Go to the sweets counter and ask for samples. The Mango burfi is AMAZING. Be forewarned– Indian sweets aren’t for everyone. They are very, very sweet and often milkbased, and some are deep fried. Not quite the same if you’re used to baked goods.

lunch time buffet: approx. $ 10 is all you can eat including beverages and desserts! What a great deal for excellent Indian food in a much better atmosphere than many of those Indian Fast Food places around NYC! the trick is to go for the eat-in lunch special so you don’t go over-budget, but do taste all the yumminess… I’ve tried the pictured veggie burger, but it ain’t as good as everything else they have to offer. i used to work right next to this place and how i miss n crave their lunch special! if u choose to get desserts by the pound, it ends up being a buck each. perfect little bite for your satisfying my sweet tooth.

This rating is strictly for the sweets counter — 4.5 stars! Each time I come in here(conveniently on my way home from work) I get my fix for Indian sweets. I point to the confections in all their colorfully saturated glory and say, «1 of each, please!» I should be embarrassed to be such a piglet… but I’m not. 1 pound of the freshest lip smacking sweets in the area for just $ 8.99.

A few weeks back, I noted with some interest a spate of reviews on Indian sweets. That reminded me that I hadn’t written up anything outside of the incomparable, Ras Malai. In the subsequent period I have been sampling various sweet shops in Manhattan and Queens. The one that deserves high praise for consistently excellent quality and value for money is: Sukhadia. For $ 8.99 a pound you can pick up an assortment of delicious sweets in one box. These are not the traditional Gulab Jamun variety, but almost any and everything is delectable. My favorite items here include Coconut Barfi, Mango Barfi, Cashew Roll(stuffed with pistachio), Kaju Katli, Almond Roll(pistachio filling), and Carrot Halwa(divine when heated slightly). The issue I have with most Indian sweet vendors is that their product is so rich that one can’t possibly feel anything but heavy after consuming them. However, Sukhadia excels in the ability to get the serving size right and doesn’t OD on sugar. This is a rare skill and merits them ‘Best in Class’ status. Despite my unstinted praise for their product, I am subtracting the fifth star for spotty service — more of an issue when the manager was away for a few months. Apparently, he had gone back to India to get married … and as a result, smiles more often these days. He is very efficient and professional and I hate to frequent the shop whenever he isn’t around. The replacement is often on the phone taking delivery orders(they also run a restaurant) as opposed to attending to you. Sukhadia has outlets in Chicago, New York, and Edison, NJ. I can’t say for the original location in Chicago, but as I understand the New York outlet sells sweets made in the Edison Kitchen. Thus, the difference between having a good experience and a GREAT one is the ability to spot which is the fresher dessert — the one that has been brought into the city that same day. As the observational skill will take ordinary mortals some time(and a few hundred thousand calories!) to master, I would suggest opting for the selection that seems least disturbed by sales. Generally, I’ve noticed that the trays that are almost full, are the ones that are the freshest. Otherwise, I recommend a strategy that I’ve successfully used here: Look at the server in all earnestness and say that you have to buy a few boxes to take to a wedding. Lo and behold, smart businessmen that they are, they will search inside the closets to find you what is the very best of the goodies on display. The philosophy was once shared with me «You are taking my product to a wedding. Everyone will want to know where you got the sweets from. I can not spoil my reputation by coming up short»(and losing potential for significant orders subsequently as weddings/functions are the occasions where they sell the most — for every attendee HAS to partake in sweets). Going back to the observational skill, I often read with some amusement the gracious praise that comes my way at Unilocal for the passion I have for desserts. I thought I might share an interesting anecdote in this regard. When I was a toddler, my family was visiting a number of shrines of sufis and saints across Punjab in Pakistan. At one particular shrine of a saint who lived in the 12th Century(and was fond of sugar and all things sweet), one of the elder faqirs(Baba) who was sitting quietly(they don’t talk for days on end), as if in a trance, got up all of a sudden and came towards my mother. «Child», he intoned, «You will never lack sugar in your life». He paused to hear the small crowd nearby chatter excitedly at the unexpected blessing of the Baba. Then continued: «Nor will one of your children». With that, he walked back to resume his meditation. I have absolutely no recollection of this event, but given that my Mom is the only one of her siblings to love dessert and I’ve had more than my share of them, I often wonder how much there is to life that one can not explain rationally!

I was reading the NYTimes this afternoon(yes, instead of working) and came across a review for Indian restaurants. Since it was 11:30am and my tummy was already grumbling this sounded like the most delicious thing I have ever come across in my life. Lucky for me, Sukhadia’s(one of the places featured in the article) is just around the corner from my office so I grabbed my colleague and ran over. Boy were we happy we did! There is a loaded buffet with lots and lots of goodies all for $ 4.99lb! I have no idea what the heck any of it was, but I tried a bit of everything and I have to say, it was pretty darn great. One thing to keep in mind is that everything is vegetarian so if you are craving Chicken Tikka, you aren’t going to get it here.

Quick, cheap Indian Veggie dishes. Very tasty and very spicy! Not for the lame or tame. A mini-chain for Indian milk sweets and snacks, this Midtown find is convenient for a tasty lunch with some kick and good alternative to the standard fast food chains of the area.
