I am from the Midwest, STL to be exact and Chinese food is notorious there. In NYC it’s hard to find Chinese take out that’s similar to STL. This place definitely hits close to home. The shrimp fried rice is delicious and has tons of shrimp. I also ordered the crab Rangoon and even though it comes in a quantity of 8 I was able to get a smaller amount for half the price. This worked out well considering it’s just me and 8 would have been a lot. The prices are reasonable and be food was hot and fresh. The restaurant is cozy, and decorated very nicely. The decorations match the cuisine being served. It’s clean and the staff is extremely friendly.

Four stars for takeout, this isn’t fancy ass Chinese food. That said, the take out was tasty, not overly salty and tasted fresh enough. Two lunch combos and a thing of veggie rice was $ 21. Delivery was quick quick quick, just what you need when you’re feelin’ Chinese in a whim.

Don’t expect excellent Chinese food but it’s a clean and decent grease spoon joint. Prices are reasonable and the staff is friendly. It’s my go to spot when I need food fast. Pro tip: If you want fresher fried rice, ask for it with no soy sauce and extra eggs.

Disgusting, disgusting, disgusting! Did I mention the food was disgusting? After a 45 minute wait, the food was finally delivered. Pork dumplings were in a container with grease and absolutely inedible. Very thick dumpling and gross filling. The pepper steak with tomato had no flavor to it. All in all, one of the worst meals I’ve had.

Shanghai is my default Chinese takeout place in the UES. Their food is consistently good. Sesame chicken, lo mein, beef/chicken with mixed vegetables, and pepper steak with onion are my favorites. Their lunch deals are awesome. Staff are polite and delivery is fast!

Disclaimer: This is a fast-food take-out restaurant. Do not come here expecting authentic Chinese food. Definitely don’t come here expecting Shanghai cuisine. We knew what we were getting ourselves into, so we were pleased with the results. After living in Philly for 6 years, I wanted some food-truck-quality Chinese food at food-truck prices. Though Shanghai is not as cheap as a food truck would be, it was still within budget. The boneless spare ribs tasted very much like char siu. I loved that it came with pork fried rice! The chicken eggplant was a bit bland, and the eggplant wasn’t as soft as I would’ve liked. But the portions! For both entrees, there was so much meat/eggplant compared to rice! Very generous! The complimentary spring roll was also pretty good. We were also given 2 free drinks with our meals. The scallion pancake was underwhelming, so I wouldn’t get it again. Overall, it was a good experience. Shanghai has decent Americanized Chinese food for good prices, given the quantity of the food. I’ll definitely be back if I’m craving this kind of food again! Oh, it’s also a bonus that they’re open at 9PM.

This is definitely good for take-out & delivery in the area. The only thing that I’m not a big fan of was the Wonton Soup — it was bland and I don’t love those mass produced wontons that have thick shells. The location is clean & the people at the counter are friendly. Overall, this place is a win, because it’s Chinese food that doesn’t immediately send me running to the bathroom. Lunch specials are a good price. I don’t believe they’re on seamless, but they do delivery and take credit cards. I get the chicken & cashew nuts and it’s great.

So I am extremely picky when it comes to take out Chinese food in NYC because sometimes it just taste like trash mixed with grease. My husband told me about this place he stumbled upon on the East Side that reminded us of our fav place back home in St Louis. We ordered Beef Lo Mein, Shrimp fried rice, and sweet and sour chicken. Everything stayed hot for a 20 mins drive home. Everything tasted fresh and not over seasoned. We waited only about 10 minutes for our food and the staff was friendly as well. The establishment is very clean and has about 5 tables you can sit down and eat for a quick bite, I will be back.

Great food in a nice atmosphere — a rarity in NYC Chinese food. The service could have been a little friendlier, and I think fortune cookies need to be standard(we Americans expect such things). However, the food was tasty, and the family atmosphere was great for a bigger family dinner.

One case where crowd rating doesn’t work. Maybe previous raters were high when they ate the food from here. Ordered 5 dishes during lunch for delivery. Below is summary of experience: FOOD — negative 5 stars — the main draw of any eating establishment — terrible. Vegetables are just OK, not fresh. Flavorless. Beef and eggplant tasted boiled with a goop of sauce plopped on top as an afterthought. Disgusting. Chicken lo-mein tasted like greasy sandpaper. Sesame chicken — oily and soggy with dry rice and boiled broccoli that even a public school cafeteria can better serve. Beef with sugar-snap peas was rancid. HYGIENE — negative 5 stars — old spoiled and tainted ingredients. Made everyone who ate that day sick with diarrhea. Nothing like a good ol’ diarrhea train. DELIVERYTIME — 0 stars — took 45 minutes for 9 block trip — not bad, not great SERVICE — negative 2 stars — overcharged us by one dish, gave us one less soda. Missing soda, not a big deal, who cares? But overcharging? Give them the benefit of doubt. Maybe a mistake. They were good about refunding the money — the delivery guy showed up 2 hours later with the difference in cash. CONCLUSION — if you want terrible, not that cheap, make-you-shit-your-pants-literally kind of food, with excellent service on the phone, then this is your go-to place. I’m definitely not straying from our Chinese UES mainstays: Grand Sichuan and Land of Plenty ever again. Thought I would try something not Sichuanese and maybe a few dollars cheaper but paid a heavy price for it. Never again. Some Unilocal reviews are just not reliable. Eat or order from here at your own risk.

This is my favorite place for Chinese take out in the city! Love their sesame tofu… and my meat eating boyfriend does too! Good prices, large portions, and freebies make this my go to place!

Good, quick, cheap Chinese food. Extra points for the nice workers… The female worker who takes the orders is always smiling and in a great mood!

It may just be in my head but this place keeps getting better and better. My last ordering experienced topped any of my last excursions downtown, and the food was steaming hot and plentiful. Our wonton soup container came bursting with wontons, so fantastic for the price point. Their pork dumplings are in my top 5(just like the seasoning/juice to meat ratio). Keep it comin’ Shanghai!

Large portions of your typical neighborhood chinese takeout. They are awfully nice though and make your food as you request it: no sugar, No oil, etc. cheap and satisfying.

Sometimes I like to engage in activities that make me extra hungry for food, and even with that, this food tastes so bland! I know I’m paying for cheap Chinese food, but add a little more soy sauce, even MSG, something! I won’t be coming back here again. I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out that this place lacks any taste at all. I usually get the beef and broccoli and sesame chicken, and it’s all very, very bland. There’s not much more to say to that. The white rice is just as good as any other place I guess. There’s one neutral comment!

I’m not a picky Chinese food eater. Just get me some beef and broccoli, add some white rice on the side, and voila, I’m happy! Came here because this place this less than a block from my apartment and had great reviews. I got the beef and broccoli. The beef was really chewy and tasted a little off so the next time I went, I got the chicken and broccoli and some dumplings! Why do they make the skin so think on dumplings these days?! I like that they still offer the lunch special on the weekends.

My go-to for yummy, super-cheap lunch specials. And they’re super-friendly to boot. Their combination of serving pork-fried rice with their lunch specials, and throwing in a free soda for orders over $ 10 can’t be beat!

This is a solid place and a great place for takeout. Usually I’m leery of the hole in the wall Chinese food restaurants as we have all had our«bad experiences» from them. Luckily for me, this neighborhood spot is not one of them. They actually cook up some great food at very reasonable prices. I take that back, this place has great prices for the amount and quality of food you receive. While I still prefer my Chinese spots in Chinatown, this does a great job at filling the void especially at prices that won’t break the bank. Try it for yourself, you might just be ordering it more often then you initially think.

Really nice woman who is always behind the desk every time I’m there so good service but I’m not sure about the food. I always get the sesame bean curd because it seems like anything else I get is usually pretty bad. Worst sesame noodles I’ve ever had– really watery and pretty bad spring roll. But the bean curd is a pretty large portion so for around $ 8 it’s more than I’d expected. Tonight it unfortunately tastes a bit off however.
