Pathetic that Unilocal doesn’t have a note that this is BeronBeron now. It’s essentially the same menu and staff with updated décor and some slight price increases, but shouldn’t this be noted front and center so you don’t wander the East Village for hours looking for a Sapporo East sign that isnt’ there. The place itself is great, per my 4 star review.

This used to be my favorite Japanese restaurant when I was younger and when I found out that it was closed without a warning, I was pretty upset. Then one day while on the bus, I saw lights bringing life back into this spot and saw recent reviews on Unilocal,I was more than just excited! Loved the new décor! However, the food definitely did not taste the same as it used to. My go-to dish(deep fried spicy asparagus roll) became a bite of disappointment. The kaiyaki didn’t change much but it only had 5 very small pieces of scallop. I guess good things must come to an end some time…

yay!!! so glad they re-opened! this was my go-to inexpensive japanese/sushi spot. the restaurant is remodeled — giving it a date place sort of ambiance. quality of food is the same, which leaves me impressed(because this is the reason why i go to begin with). sure, you can go down the street and get 50% off sushi at the corner of st. marks, but i’ve had my share of sushi there. NOT that great or fresh. hey, you get what you pay. want a little better quality, come here. plus, i love their fried asparagus crab roll and kayake

So excited that this place has reopened! The décor is very different from how it was but it creates a nice ambiance. Food here is still great love the deep fried spicy asparagus. The price has gone up since it has been reopened.

*Must Try: Tempura and Salmon Teriyaki Bento Box. *comes with Seaweed Salad, and Potato Salad. *Tempura is lightly crisped, and not too oily or greasy. *Salmon Teriyaki is not dry. *Eel Avocado Roll is amazing.

So happy for the renovation and re opening. The Kayaki(scallop option) with a little brown rice is still the best! Yummmm

This place has re-opened with an amazing new décor. I really loved the inside, tables, sushi bar layout. The sushi was just okay for me, as there are so many other places right down the street with the same quality for 50% off. The service was fast and nice, and everything was pretty fresh. I do have a complaint though, they have a $ 20 minimum for credit card! They really should be a just cash place if this is the case because going solo ordering two rolls and a soup is under $ 20 and it very frustrating to be caught off guard. If you accept credit cards at a restaurant where your sushi rolls are under $ 10 each there should be NOMINIMUM, and if at all $ 5 like most places. It was a real turn off to end my decent meal with this surprise and I probably will not be back for this reason.

This restaurant serves good with attentive services. Very down-to-earth décor reminds me of those Teishoku restaurants in Japan which serves reasonably priced lunch/dinner combination platter. I like their Saba Teishoku which comes with rice, miso soup, some pickles and broiled Spanish Mackerel. The fish’s got nice fat, firm flesh with rich flavor. It doesn’t taste like fresh out of flavor but that’s reflected in the price. When I come here, I come for a quick bite, so that’s ok. I had their Sushi and Ramen and they are not bad.

my boyfriend took me 5 years ago and been coming here since then till now hes been going to east for over 10 years it one of my favorite sushi place. Usually there’s a wait for large party but its not so bad the wait is not to long. The food is very affordable. Everything comes out pretty fast. Food I recommend Kayaki– scollops with mayo avocado crab meat yellow tail and salmon jalapeño with vinger dressing spicy scollop roll beef terayaki(medium rare) tell them more rare if you eat it rare cause the plate is hot it will cook pork katsa its deep fried but not to the point where u dont taste the pork. uni is fresh. salad is different makes you have a bigger appetite.

Born and raised in LA, I’ve been eating Sushi since before it was cool. I remember my classmates saying, «eewww, you eat raw fish!» Oh, how times have changed. Upon moving to NY over a decade ago there was a bit of culture shock when I found out that an order of sushi was only one piece and not the two pieces that I’ve grown accustom to. And the prices were higher that what I was used to. At Sapporo East, I don’t mind as much With some of the freshest fish in town, I’ve never been disappointed in the decade that I’ve frequented this joint. And trust me, if a sushi restaurant burns me once with fishy or «off» sushi, I will never go again. Never. I guess that’s the Virgo in me. For me, a sign of a good sushi restaurant is if they make their own Tamago. It’s a labor intensive egg custard/omelette. While one of the cheapest sushi, most restaurant just buys a frozen block. Sapporo East does not. They also carry Amaebi(Sweet Shrimp) which is one of my favorite. I appreciate the fact that they’ll only carry it if it’s fresh. I do wish they had the larger variety with the fried heads, another sign of a good sushi restaurant. In addition to excellent sushi, the kitchen also cooks some awesome dishes. I highly recommend the Japanese-style curry. My only issue with this place is the décor, it’s a bit shabby and rundown, however, you’re not eating the décor. If you’re looking for some excellent sushi with your girlfriend of a year, feel free to take her here.

This place is good for the hood. About a year, or maybe two, ago I would have rated this my favorite sushi joint for under $ 20 a person. Now, I wouldnt. I cant really put my finger on it. Maybe its the size of the pieces? Maybe its the quality? Maybe its the 18 year olds getting hammered? Not sure. If you are looking for an ok meal and are in the hood, its worth it. I wouldnt go out of my way, but its a good Tuesday/Wednesday joint.

Hmm this place was just ok… my ramen had a bit too much soy sauce flavoring for my taste buds. I was sad they didn’t have my tan tan ramen, but they did make it extra spicy for me! Laid-back restaurant that was pretty empty on a Sunday night!

pretty decent place and fair price. We got seated right away when we came in on a early saturday night. I had the regular sashimi plate. It had two pieces of octupus, salmon, tuna and white fish on it. Cut decent slices and it tasted pretty good and fresh The sashimi entrée also came with a miso soup and salad. Both were decent The place filled up very quickly after we sat down, and even had lots of people waiting. Overall, just an ok experience, nothing great, but everything was decent. Price is very good for the food Will come back again

Sapporo East’s kitchen special appetizers are the major hotness. Even though I was so greedy and ordered so much, everything was amazing — a few really really stood out:(the highlighted three are must-gets!!!) *****Asparagus in spicy mayo, crab stick and melt roe: wrapped with sea weed outside and seep fried(DIVINE) **** Beef tataki *****Kaiyaki: minced giant clam or scallop & mushroom. crab stick, & avocado: broiled with mayo and smelt roe(WOW, this is a HIT!!) Variety seaweed salad Unaju with house salad Sapporo special ramen miso flavor with extra pork, extra fish cake, boiled egg and extra veggies. Hot sake is authentic. You know what I love most about Sapporo East? This amazing restaurant seems able to go under the radar and doesn’t have the ridiculous line like many other Japanese izakaya places. Get seated right away with no reservation on a Saturday. And yet, best food, best service. I highly recommend.

Sapporo is a good sushi option if you’re going for the simpler, 6 piece rolls, but you can definitely find cheaper! my eel & avocado roll and spicy scallop roll were good, but coming from cali i’m not really used to these miniature sized 6-piece portion cut rolls!(although i guess it’s the equivalent of the cali«half-price» menu rolls) service was fast, food was fresh, & the place was packed even though it was late at night! THEYDELIVER, my friends order it at least twice a week!

Came here for the first time this past weekend! It was PACKED! The menu is thorough, with interesting items on it. Definitely try the deep fried spicy asparagus roll. It’s basically a couple of stalks of asparagus rolled in nori with spicy crab meat instead of rice… then deep fried! It’s absolutely delicious! Besides that, I find the items on the menu to be slightly pricey for the quality of food. This isn’t a premium sushi joint… it’s not even a sushi restaurant to begin with. Really shouldn’t be charging $ 20 for sushi entrees.
