«Rated P For Parenthood» is a musical comedy that revisits the joy, hopes, pain, and suffering from conception to college based on the pragmatic parental perspective. The show is presented in a chronological order by two male(Chris Hoch and David Josefsberg) as well as two female cast members(Courtney Balan and Joanna Young) who have amazing vocals that enable them to interchangeably alternate their roles throughout the revue. Injected with a big dosage of humor, director Jeremy Dobrish offers a detailed glimpse of the good, the bad, and the ugly of parenting through the wonderful rites of passage such as school transition, puberty onset, first job, sex education, prom date, driving experience, and college departure. Whimsically charming, the creators turn the gig into an entertaining educational skit for audiences of all ages. Despite some pleasantly predictable sketches, I feel a tremendous amount of energy bursting out of every song. I almost tear up watching the mother singing a lovely«Prayer For Ellie» lullaby to sooth her crying baby to sleep. On top of that, my favorite number is the hip-hop rendition during the«Parent Teacher Conference» performed by the male actors. Outwardly funny with simplicity, Rated P is the conventional symbol for contemporary parenting, whilst reminding us of the importance of familial functions. While on my way out of the Westside Theater, I noticed an abundance of smiling faces across cohorts. And of course, I was smiling :) You’ll love it! Catch it or miss it by April 8.

We came out to see Rated P on a casual Wednesday night after a day of work. Firstly, the Westside Theater is a great area for an off broadway show: great sound, great view from all seats, and comfortable with intimate vibe. When the actors sang, you felt as if they were staring straight at you. Rated P is a comedy based on the irony and struggles at every stage of parenthood. The four actors were incredibly versatile: taking the roles of 30+ characters in the course of 90 minutes. The music was fun and original. Particular memorable were«Didn’t’ fuck up» where the character sing of their adventures in parenthood concluding their relief that they haven’t fucked up, «Parent teacher Conference» where two dads decided to listen and sing to a rap song to «Pump Up» for parent teacher conference night, and«Wild Romance» where a dad driving his family to drop off his kids for summer school continues to break into fantasy and dance about how summer camp is his chance to score with his wife. Rated P is fun and ironic and relates with the common experience of bringing up children without resorting to childish humor and shares no signs of condescension.

The cast can sang! I wasn’t sure what to expect from«Rated P» and my hopes declined a bit during the opening vignette because it was so cheesy — but then it went uphill from there! There were a few weak vignettes here and there but the good ones definitely made up for them. «Rated P» is hilarious, endearing, and witty. Just off the top of my head, the vignettes of the husband singing about how much he appreciates his wife, and the mother calling on her late mother to watch over her daughter on her first day of school, were beautiful. I loved the humorous PSAs and texts(on the screens above the stage). The songs were so catchy. A review I read said it best(and, of course, now I can’t find that review for the life of me): «Rated P» isn’t just for parents. It’s for anyone who’s ever been a part of a family. I related from a child’s standpoint and«Rated P» made me sympathize with my parents. It gave me a glimpse of what parenthood might be like for me(the«my son is smarter than me» vignette would fit future me to a T). Definitely worth checking out. It’s a lot of fun — I think it would be a really good show to go to with a group. The downside is, I wouldn’t recommend paying the full price of $ 89.50 for a ticket. Hopefully, they’ll do rush tickets at some point. In the meantime, look for discounted tickets.

I LOVEDTHISSHOW. I was laughing so hard I almost wet myself! I thought it was friggin’ hilarious. I don’t have kids but my boyfriend does. I found the quips about sexuality pretty funny. We never see our parents or any parents as sexual beings but this show, reminds us they are. Of course there is a «Euw» factor because we all don’t want to think about our parents or grandparents in that fashion but that was what so funny to me. And also parents dealing with kids becoming sexual beings YIKES. GROSS too! hahahhha. There were multiple vignettes one after another and I just couldn’t stop laughing at all of them. I love that there was singing, dancing, laughing, I would see it again! This show is not just for parents, it’s for anyone who has a sense of humor, who had parents, who has sisters or brothers, grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles.etc. One of my favorite vignettes was this husband and wife team were driving their two kids to the bus to send them off to camp. The scenes would freeze and the husband would sing out loud to the audience his thoughts in his head. I was crying with laughter! Thoroughly entertaining from beginning to end. The 90 minute show flew by! One of the better shows I have seen in a long time. The comic timing was AWESOME. The humor is sorta like the TV show on ABC. It’s very Modern Family-esque. There are no bad seats in the Westside Theatre Upstairs.

Such a fun show! A non-stop, fast moving hilarious new musical that had me fully entertained for all 90 minutes! It is a relatively short show with no intermission but I thought it was perfect. I was a bit hesitant at first to go because of the title, i.e. I am no where near being a parent but it is still very relatable! I was able to see it from the kids point of view, but also maybe helps me understand a bit more from my parents point of view. All in all I guarantee you’ll have fun regardless of what age you are. Although, I would not suggest bringing young kids to this show or else you’ll get a lot of the questions they explore. Such as, where do babies come from and what is 69? The venue is pretty intimate and small — all«orchestra» seats so the view is great from any location. The cast is a simple two man and two woman, but they are able to transition between characters seamlessly. Take your mom, your dad, or a friend!!! P. S. Thanks Unilocal for the free tixxxsss =)

Being that my boyfriend is a parent, I thought this would be a great play for him to see. What I didnt expect though, was for me to love it as much as I did. The theatre, though small, has great seats. We are a «fluffy» bunch but managed to fit comfortably… more comfortable than some broadway theatres, i might add. We had a great view and it looks like pretty much anywhere you sit would grant you a great view. The cast was brilliant. The script was perfect! I am not a parent but found the vignettes witty and appropriate. They were hilarious and not overdone. The actresses had amazing vocals and the comedic timing was perfect. The play isonly 90 minutes which flies by as this energetic and witty play unfolds. I would totally see this again and have already told my mother to move her butt and get a ticket. This might not seem like a play for everyone but if you are here, you were definitely a child once… and its interesting to see the other side of it. Definitely like a look into a crystal ball for me which is exciting and terrifying at the same time. Go see this. and then call your mother.

Hugely entertaining and the cast is totally packed with talent from the top of their head to the tips of their toes! The 90 minutes went by quickly and looking back there is nothing I would edit out. The musicians were equally excellent as well and one can tell the cohesiveness of the show. The plot is quite really quite simple. Imagine you and your parents are in a musical and the parents sing or rap all the things they want to say, skipping all the drama without taking away all the heart. Courtney Balan, Chris Hoch, David Josefsberg and Joanna Young sang and acted their guts out in their performance. Courtney did an excellent rendition of the song«Prayer for Ellie». They had only had keyboards, drums and guitars but I can imagine this show with a full orchestra and it would be wild. I think Rated P is really the way to do a show. Succinct and perfect. This would be an excellent mom-daughter-father-son night out. And don’t forget the grandparents, they’ll see themselves n this show too. Thanks, Unilocal

Funny, hilarious, and you may learn something! The play is a continuous series of skits high lighting the humorous side of parenthood. Adding to the laughter are witty songs sung by some great vocals. If you are not a parent yet, go ahead laugh! All of the humor and joke will come true. If you are a parent already then have a good laugh because it will all come true! If you are a parent already then have a good laugh because it’s all true!

This was a great show. The cast was a four person team that would play many roles and characters. The show is both witty, funny and creative. Although I don’t have kids, it was great satirical role plays that were being performed. This play is well worth the trip to go to. After leaving the show, you could tell almost everyone enjoyed it. The smaller venue made the actors and actress shine so much brighter because they were so up close and personal. The live musicians were great too. Overall I give this A solid A

Had the good fortune to see Rated P the Musical at the Westside Theatre Upstairs in Manhattan recently. Rated P is a series of blackouts that address common parenting themes including babysitting grandparents, making friends on the playground(with other parents, I mean, the kids seem to be able to work that out by themselves), and rights of passage including the kids first job and dropping your 18 year old off at the dorm. The cast(Courtney Balan, Chris Hock, David Josefsberg, and Joanna Young) race through hilarious sketches and funny, racy and touching songs playing a wide range of parents and kids. Rated P is just a pleasure, you’ll thank me if you go.
