Both employees smiled and asked if I needed help. Unlike most petland stores.

I was very upset to see that the animals in this store are not being treated with respect. There were two adult Cockatiels in the back that looked sick, dirty, and jusdging from their dry coats, malnourished. They were in a cage much too small for them with one perch and one toy and very dirty water. When I came up to them they began cawing at me and trying to make contact through the cage with their beaks, and were obviously desperate for attention. I wanted to take them home and give them fresh veg and fruit and a bath so badly, but I couldn’t come to terms with the fact that spending money there to help these two birds, would be supporting this treatment of other animals in the future.
It wasn’t only those two birds being treated neglectfully and improperly housed, but they were so intelligent, alert, and present, it really broke my heart. The frogs and lizards were in the smallest tanks I have ever seen. Probably 6′ by 5″ with six or seven frogs cramped in. The same went for the rodents. One of the hamsters was just nonstop trying to claw through the glass as they had about 12 hamsters in a cage that should have housed no more than two or three.
I actually called and filed a formal animal neglect complaint with the city. This was unacceptable and needs rectified immediately.

I stood there an hour and a half while the staff rushed around helping and checking everyone out but me. There is a very cool and nice Asian guy named Arturo who was a huge help, but I walked out feeling like he sold me a lot of unnecessary stuff for my 2 gallon fish tank and four tiny new fish (though I’ll admit that’s my fault). $ 150 dollars later, I very carefully transferred them into the tank, added live plants and a stupid bubbler and lo and behold all my fish died within a week. I’ve been able to keep fish for a pretty long time in the past and I’m not a first timer, I absolutely did everything right… these fish must have been sick so yea, stay away from the fish and be careful because they’ll try to take advantage and up sell you on everything.

The staff here are awesome! Always happy to help and super friendly and they really know there stuff. The manager was nice enough to send a faulty harness back to the manufacturer himself. It’s a small enough store but they have ample supply for a good price. The pup and I will be back

I have to say that after being to this store today it has definitely deteriorated over the months. My particular concern was the lack of cleanliness and definite lack of food in the bird cages. There were about five fruit pellets in the sun conure’s dish and the same for the other larger parrot (a ring neck I think)
I mean give the birds some seed for god’s sake!

Good prices but the employees are almost always screaming at each other. Truly just cursing each other out in from of customers, threatening to quit or fire each other, etc.
It’s actually kind of funny but very insane.

I really love this store! We go about once every ten days to buy a new bully stick to our dog. The ones they have there are all natural and from grass fed beef aaaannddd they are dirt cheap! They have a great selection of toys and treats, all very reasonably cheap given the area and the competition! It’s a down to earth store with very very kind and animal loving staff. Love it!

A nice nonviolent pet store with no animals in the cages. Huge selection of food and accessories for all kinds of animals. Friendly staff always ready to help and more than happy to answer all your questions not only about the products they sell, but also about animal health and training.
I walked in to get few toys for my cat and a leash to take him out. The lady helped me to choose the right size and gave me useful tips on how to get my cat used to the leash. Though the smallest size vest for the leash is still too big for my chubby cat, it seems to be for dogs only. That’s what they told me at another store. But still the place is nice and friendly. You can stop by for a treat for your pet, toy or friendly advice.

Really, I shouldn’t shop here at all. I think the way they treat their birds is kind of gross. At least they give the parrots pellets, but their cages are often dirty.
But, I go because it’s close. My dog likes the treats and the staff is overall pretty friendly at this location. The turnover is high, so this could change at any moment.
Also, I can’t complain too much about how they treat their birds seeing as I’ve probably murdered (unintentionally) at least a hundred fish I’ve purchased there over the years. Oops. RIP. I do believe I’ve finally got my water quality under control though.
Still, there are better pet stores. MUCH better pet stores. Try Fauna uptown, for instance. The problem is, though, that they are uptown. And, like I said, even though a store is utter crap compared to another shop somewhere else, because of the distance factor and sheer laziness, I go. And I’m not alone. Shame on us. And shame on you, Petland Discounts. You can do better by modernizing both the way you keep pets, and also the dingy look of your store. This ain’t 1982 NYC anymore. It’s time to look pretty.

The staff is awesome! My only complaint is that their their is a limited selection of products, I assume because the store is tiny? And they do shove the animals all the way in the back corner which is rather sad. They should relocate them to the front so they can see seen and sold! Poor things need some attention ;) Besides that, I am a regular and a huge fan!

Good pet store. The people that work here are nice and always helpful. Good selection and the prices are fair.

I really really like this store. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. They know what they are talking about, and if they don’t know for sure, they are honest with you. They help you get what you need quickly. Me and my family go in there often to pick up basic pet supplies such as bedding and crickets, and the manager and most of the staff know us there.
I would give them 5 stars for having such an animal and human friendly environment, but one star is taken off because they do not sell rat food. They have about 5 varieties of ‘small animal’ or hamster/​gerbil food, and another section for the chinchilla and ferret supplies. There is no sign of rat food! I have a specific brand that I mix in daily with my rat’s home made vegan diet called Reggie Rat, and I keep that in their bowl at all times. I would love if they sold it so I didn’t have to travel so far to a place called PETCO that I like to compare to animal hell.
Even if they didn’t sell that brand any brand that had the nutrients and daily components that rats need for their everyday diets, I could get temporarily. Small animals such as gerbils and hamsters are not the same as rats and do not need or eat all of the same things and they should not be placed in the same category.
Sorry if I feel so strongly about rat food, as to some that may seem annoying and stupid but it really isn’t! The only place that sells that food that I use is in union square and they abuse their animals. If you would like the full story of my experience there, go read my review. It kills me to give them more money every time my babies need to eat.
Like I said, this petland is GREAT. 99% of everything in this store.
tl;dr, Just wish they sold rat food. Otherwise amazing, I will continue to shop there, and would recommend.

Narrow pet store with your standard pet store stuff, though they only had small bags of most of their dog foods. A bit irritating.
Also, I can’t help but feel sorry for the few animals in the back of the store. A few birds and rabbits stuck in the corner. Not cool.

I just adopted an 8 year old rat terrier chihuahua mix who was abandoned and saved from a kill shelter.
After only 2 days having him — i had some time to buy all of my supplies and wanted stuff for home and work. I went to Petland Discounts on 6^th Ave after having a horrific experience at a puppy boutique right around the corner. I was very pleased with my experience here. Rarely do you have a customer service experience where you feel compelled to return based on the associates performance.
The store is Manhattan sized (small but packed with everything you will need).
The staff is where this place makes the grade. I was helped by a gentleman who actually took the time to help me find something! Before we started looking for the second item, he knelt down and pet my dog. Then asked what his name was. That’s when it hit me, this was the first time since my pet shopping spree that anyone paid attention to my dog! The simple gesture of a smile and acknowledging my pet seems like something any pet store should do. Yet after 5 different stores throughout the east and west villages this was the first time anyway even said hello!!!
Beyond that he gave me great advice, made me feel comfortable, and even gave my pup a treat.
Thank you for helping me make my apartment into a home for a little guy in need. You will definitely see more of me.
