New York University SPS

Graduated with a Maters in Management and System and enjoyed every minute of it. Professors were absolutely amazing and administration was great. Couldn’t except less from NYU.

After finishing the 1^st part of a two part class for a «letter» of completion of the required 40 hours for Medical Interpretation, Spanish/​English, it became clear that without a «certificate» this course was not going to fulfill my needs.
So before I would decide to sign up for part two and invest another $ 980.- I wanted to know some more information. I had heard from one of the other students that NYU was beginning another program that would take longer and be more expensive but at the end would yield a certificate.
My inquiries were presented by email several times; I wanted to know what my options were; was this other course available? would the course which I had just taken count towards that certificate and in the event that I needed to take a break between parts 1 and 2, how long would the course I had just taken still be viable.
We’ll let me tell you that as a born and raised New Yorker, very few things surprise me, but NYU managed to pull it out of a hat.
That such a prestigious institution would just ignore my emails (several of them) including the one where I stressed that I would miss the registration for the second part if I decided to attend.
To say that they are unprofessional would be like calling the Grand Canyon a pot hole. Complete disregard to my inquiries and I wasn’t the only person in the class they did this to, another student tried to call just to get a transcript for tax purposes and they made her jump through hoops for that. Needless to say she isn’t continuing this ride down the NYU rabbit hole. I see from other reviews here that if I had perhaps come to Unilocal first, I would have thought it over before decided to take that class.
I understand that Hunter College has a medical interpretation course and who knows maybe they answer inquiries.
There legacy for me is that I wouldn’t register for anything at NYU; degreed courses or certified or whatever else they offered.
They are a disgrace!

I was mid way through earning a Certificate but found out today that they’re phasing out certificates and are no longer offering them. Only those who have completed all required coursework and registered for certification will get one. Everyone else who’s en route to getting a certificate is at a loss. Imagine a PhD program doing something similar. Only SCPS can get away with this type of scandalous practice over and over.

Some background — I have dual degrees, Business administration and Marketing -
After working in the digital marketing industry for approximately 4 years, I decided I wanted to further educate. The field is ever changing, and company learnings/​experience is extremely helpful, however can only be so unbiased for obvious reasons.
NYU SCPS stands up to the suberb NYU reputation, and is an excellent place to come to advance your career and build a more well-​rounded base for yourself. The professors are well seasoned in their industry, and your classmates *many of which are international* typically have impressive backgrounds. Excellent for networking.
Some courses are available online, however most meet weekly for 3 hours (depending on the level of the class, questions, and lesson, this could be less) for 12 weeks consecutively.
In terms of coursework — Expect to have lengthy, but very helpful assignments weekly with thorough feedback from your professors.
Overall, attending has helped me become a more well-​rounded employee, and skills sets derived from classes I’ve taken there have assisted in career advancement.

For those looking to attend NYU’s School of Continuing Education to obtain a Certificate in Digital Cinematography, don’t waste your time or money. It’s really a money trap. I attended the four week intensive the summer of 2014 and was very disappointed that I invested $ 4,000 + four weeks of not working into an education that that seemed more like a scam than any school serious about educating its students. I wasn’t the only one, the entire class felt the same way.
By-​the-​way, this criticism is at the school and not the professors who taught the class. I felt they tried their best with what they were given by school, which wasn’t a lot.
Here’s why:
– NYU School of Continuing Education is not the famous film school at Tisch School of the Arts, its a separate school altogether. I knew this going in but many of the students did not, especially the foreign students who made up ¾ of the class. That said, the school administrators have very little knowledge of how to run a cinematography program and didn’t care to research. For instance, they advertise in their class description that the program will teach students «Digital Cinematography» but the students learn on DSLR cameras. Big difference.
Also, the classroom/​studio is an office space, like what you’d find at an accounting firm. One side of the room had a full row of windows, so when we projected films or class assignments, the room was never dark. There was no way to darken the room. How does a cinematography class not support proper projection… This is whole purpose of the craft.
There isn’t enough workspace for all 20 – 25 students who attended the class. Because there were so many students and so little space, we broke into groups to work on an assignment, so groups had to find empty office space rooms to work in. While in the empty rooms, we’d be hounded and then kicked-​out by the building manager, who was strict that all student must work in one room in the building, even when there just wasn’t enough space. It was a problem and very disruptive. Why didn’t NYU School of Continuing Ed figure solve this problem before the class started and why didn’t they find a solution during the four weeks? The ineptitude of the administrators was so out of place.
The foreign students had it the worst. The original dates we registered for changed by one whole week only a few days before the class was to begin. This really screwed up many of the foreign students financial situations because they had to stay an extra week that they didn’t plan for, which meant extending living arrangements (which is very expensive in NYC), changing flights, paying change fees, ect. It was brutal on some people. And all the effort for a super sub par education.
The whole situation was poor dealings. The only one who truly benefits is NYU School of Continuing Education as they wreck in the cash.
BETTER OPTIONS
After taking the intensive at NYU School of Continuing Education, I obviously needed more. So, I enrolled in The School of Visuals Arts continuing education courses for Cinematography. This school is lesser known than NYU, but I found my education to be so much more thorough. These courses were excellent. They have two working studios, digital cameras, movie lights, full grip, a casting department and everything you need to practice cinematography.
I would also look into Maine Media Lab for a much better alternative to NYU’s terrible program.

**Please note — this is for the MS programs at NYU-​SCPS. Also, I am NOT a student, but went to an information session and was slightly horrified at what I learned.**
I am a senior marketing manager with approximately eight years of experience. I always promised myself that I would work for while and return to school to get my MS in marketing (vs. going right out of school). Well, I’ve started looking around at different schools in NYC and of course NYU came up.
I attended an information session at the NYU-​SCPS (the only part of the school that offers a MS in marketing) and the entire two hours was a sales pitch to convince students to drop $ 76k for a degree that might get them a job as a marketing manager (average pay: $ 70-​$ 90k) or an account executive (read: salesperson). I should have gotten up and walked out when someone asked «what is the average salary your alumni earn?» and the response was «oh, we don’t keep that type of data.» Tip:
keeps that type of data!
Shame on NYU for having this SCPS associated with their good name (in addition to the ethical issues involved in for-​profit education).

Fair disclosure I am an NYU alum.
After going back to NYU as an adult and completing a degree in economics, I found myself missing going to school after work.
My wife and I signed up for a certificate in foreign language (French) program. So far it is great.
The first class including fees and book was around $ 500 each. The class meets12 times for a little over two hours.
What a value, look at any other class offerings for foreign language classes in NYC where you get 12 2 hour group sessions for such low costs.
The professor M. Barniker is great. The classes are a little intense and there are assignments every week, so you are learning at great depth, but she also recognizes that we are most likely coming from a full day’s work.
If you declare that you are seeking a certificate you get a student ID that grants access to the library and other facilities which is huge.
All in all it is a great experience so far.

If I could rate SCPS a 0, I would.
I am taking the effort to write this review in hopes of saving future students from a ton of heartbreak, money and time. I have spent the last year taking and attempting to take courses with them, and point blank, I have never had a worse experience dealing with the financial issues of an educational institution.
They frequently cancel classes because of insufficient enrollment. ⁴⁄₅ classes I have registered for with them were terminated with VERY short notice, leaving me little time to change my schedule around again to accommodate a new class. On top of that, many of their classes for the same certificate occur at the same time every week. (This means, no, you can’t finish your certificate in a year, because all their classes for your _​_​_​_​_​_​_​_​_​_​certificate are all on Tuesday. What?!)
Even better, two weeks after finding out my class was canceled, I call to inquire why I haven’t yet received a refund for it (I gave it two weeks figuring it would take time to process…) and I was politely informed that they instead of releasing the funds they were giving me «credit» to be put towards another class at SCPS. SORRY, WHAT?
So, you offer a class, take my money, cancel it three days before the start of the semester and refuse to return my money?
Don’t get me started on the time I tried to use the credit and find out that it was put towards a class 1. I never registered for, 2. I supposedly «registered» for A MONTH after the class ended. I was kindly told by bursar that, «It was probably a glitch in the system. If you put the class in your cart, since you had credit, the system automatically registered you.»
I’ve been trying to get this resolved since September 2013. It’s January 2014. I have been in contact with them for four months. No replies to my e-​mails, no confirmations. I spoke to their forsaken supervisor two weeks ago, called back today and she remembered nothing of our two hour phone call. Great, thanks.
If you can get into the class, have no qualms about randomly losing large amounts of money and don’t mind paying $ 2500 and two years for a certificate, by all means, do it. I will NEVER take another class with you, nor would I recommend you to anyone. Keep my $ 500, NYU. This headache I got in exchange was a little over-​priced, no?

A great continuing education institution. NYU is by far the best school for certificate programs. There are no shortage to the amount do certificates they offer. You have to keep in mind though these maybe challenging classes but they are not like being enrolled in a undergraduate or masters class. I’ve found the classes to be toned down just because it is not like being enrolled at NYU main campus. You will still learn a ton and the certificates look great on a resume.

Is it hard to be accepted to this program im either applying to the public relations program or the marketing. any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m about to finish the advanced certificate in portfolio management… although I’ve probably taken about 14 finance classes here in all.
It’s absolutely hit or miss.
Sometimes, I ask myself how such sophisticated economists and financial executives can find the time to teach these classes… and sometimes I ask myself how the person teaching the class could have the nerve to teach it.
I’m not mad at this program at all. Along with my own self– interest and motivation on the subject, I picked up a great deal here.
I really don’t know how much good the certificate will do me, but all in all a good experience and I would recommend at least the finance classes, but would suggest that when you find yourself in a class, you ask your colleagues if they can give the names of great professors they’ve had previously.
Ah, one last thing — I took one of the classes online and it was exceptional. The professor was amazing! And aside from the fact that I had the tendency to fall asleep more often at home, it was totally convenient… and the classes are archived to review in case you fall asleep too.
