New Ohio Theatre

Very small theater down on Christopher street near west side hway Saw several shows here in the past. Good views from all seats. Plays that are done here are new works. Theater is in basement, there is an elevators to get down to the theater.

It’s truly a pleasure working with these people. I saw two shows here before we rented. It is clean and very organized. It feels like a home. I highly recommend renting AND seeing the shows they curate. They have about 6 bathroom stalls in the venue. This is probably the first off /​off off broadway theater with this many toilets (as ridiculous as it may sound;)

I guess this review is more for Flying Snakes in 3D rather than the New Ohio Theatre as I only came to the New Ohio Theatre to watch Flying Snakes in 3D.
I saw the event posted up on Unilocal and as my friends and I didn’t have any plans for July 4, we thought ‘why not?‘

The show was crazy.
According to the blurb «Flying Snakes in 3-​D is an epic fusion of sci-​fi parody, the avant-​garde, and brutally autobiographical elements, in which a young and broke theater company challenge themselves to the ultimate task in order to pack the houses: to successfully make a play that is better suited for film. What they come up with is «Flying Snakes in 3-D,“where mutant killer snakes are accidentally released from CIA-​enlisted scientific headquarters under the setting of earth under attack, and violent, bloody chaos ensues. Will The Heroes be able to defeat the snakes? Will the theatre company be able to make their play succeed in the face of overwhelming financial, technical and emotional obstacles? Packed with dance, cheap special effects, and absolutely stunning video design, this tongue-​in-​cheek parody wildly entertains while daring to ask the question: If theater is a dying art, why are we still making it?»
What I got out of it: It was crazy.
You come into a small theater. The chairs all had rubber snakes on them. The Everywhere Theatre Group was there and the show starts by each member sharing a little background about themselves. This is the ‘brutally autobiographical elements’ which was mentioned in the blurb. Each member basically experienced a horrendous, traumatizing childhood and explained how having theater makes them a happier more fulfilled person. Crazy b-​movie sci-​fi channel style snake action occurs with more bits of cast members talking about their own internal struggles and their hate for the typical over privileged trust funded artists. You get to throw the snakes. Bam!
Afterwards there was an after party where they had free beers. Met Leah from the cast who was extremely nice and grateful that Unilocaling the event had brought people.
Good event, don’t expect high art — but I mean after reading the blurb who would? lots of fun! check it out!
