Murray’s Cheese Shop

Terrific spot. It’s more than just cheese. Murrays now has sandwiches and some high end groceries like olive oil and fresh pasta. The cheese selection is awesome and the staff is knowledgable. They also do wine and cheese classes.

A friend asked me to bring cheese as a first course for a dinner he was hosting. Lucky for me, Murray’s was right around the corner from me. Step in, grab a number and drool while you wait your turn.
Murray’s offers a very large selection of exquisitely curated cheeses from all over the world. They have lots of hard-​to-​find cheeses, and everything from cheddar for the less adventurous to… well, I don’t actually know, since I’m not at either extreme of the cheese-​eating public.
When my turn came I explained that I wanted a first course for about four people, no goat (I don’t like goats’ milk.) She suggested three would be a good number, and ticked off qualities: Did I want hard, runny, with rind, gamey, mild, etc? We started with a soft mild cheese with a white bloomed rind. OMG, I could have eaten it forever. The next two needed to contrast with it. How about this one? I think we should go a little stronger. This one? Ummm… yes, that seems good. And now how about this? Or maybe this? She offered me tastes of several, warming them briefly in her (gloved) hands before handing them over to me so I could better taste the subtleties of each one.
Before long I had a fantastic assortment of three cheeses. I grabbed a loaf of an excellent local sourdough and off I went. Cheap? Not at all. Value for money? Yes, in spades.
My friends were blown away by the cheese. «Where did you get these?» «We have a good cheese shop nearby, but nothing like this!» Mission (deliciously) accomplished!

This is such a cute place to get some drinks with friends or take someone out on a date. They have some amazing wine and cheese, I am no expert on wines, but most of the wine I have had here and even the beer just tastes really good. That’s good enough for me.
We were a bunch of people and started with the Burrata with pea shoots which was so creamy and delicious. Moved on to the cheese plate which was carefully curated by the cheese monger, we didn’t want blue cheese and anything stinky and the meats and cheese that he selected were amazing. We had this creamy cheese from the Loire Valley and a Gouda with hints of butterscotch, those were my 2 favs. We did eat other stuff, like the seasonal Mac and cheese, which was ok, the sliders which were very tasty, baby carrots with feta was nice but the favorite dish on the table was the grilled cheese and the amazingly flavorful roasted tomato soup.
Go for the cheese and wine which is exceptional. The service is friendly and good. The prices aren’t too bad for West Village.
The next time I visit I want to try the burgers that looked really good on the next table.

Every cheese that I wanted. Delicious ones from every region in France! I was particularly looking for a sheep chess from the French Pyrenees and the pointed me to a perfect one that goes with Jurançon wine. Lucky NYC!

Great cheese & charcuterie selection. The workers are really good about safety for food allergies. I’m allergic to nuts and sunflower seeds and the cheese counter workers checked all the ingredients for the items I got. Great service!

What a fantastic store! They have literally dozens of types of cheeses. There is fresh bread. There are sandwiches. There is an antipasto bar. There are meats. It has everything. Prices are not cheap but quality is high so you get your money’s worth. We tried the Gouda and white cheddar and loved them. I wish we had this store where we live!

Returned here on a recent trip to NYC and honestly, I have never been more in love. I got the pimento cheese, bacon, chicken, avocado sandwich again and it blew my mind! GO HERE!

Came here for Cinco de Mayo to attend one of their classes which I found through coursehorse. With the Cinco de Mayo theme, the class was on tequila and cheese pairings. There were 5 different cheeses and 3 kinds of tequila with 2 cocktails. There was a cheese and tequila expert that gave us some background on each cheese and drink. It was very informative and a lot of fun. They have these types of classes several times a week for about 20 people.
All the cheeses they sell are allowed to be sampled before bought. So go try them before you buy!

I was originally planning to buy a bunch of desserts here in the west village, but after eating cupcakes at Molly’s cupcakes I was still pretty hungry. I know I couldn’t just eat desserts and sweet stuff because 1. its unhealthy 2. its not gonna fill me up so I walked into murrays and decided to get a grilled cheese since I’ve never gotten one in an actual cheese shop.
All the other premium options had like tomatoes bacon or beef and other stuff. But it was too expensive so I went with the original Murrays grilled cheese

The toast was perfect and toasted extra crispy like I requested. The cheese stretched out and overflowed which was perfect. however the cheese was a bit more harder than I thought and hardened a bit after five minutes. It wasn’t like a mind blowing food and definitely not as good as pizza. But I could tell the cheese was better quality and they say they use three different kinds of cheese and I can taste it. It’s kind of too bland for me. But im positive that if I chooses the other options like BLT or with bacon and with beef it would’ve tastes a lotttt better.

AMAZING cheese shop in the West Village! Staff are all super friendly and offer you any type of cheese you want before you actually buy. I went in knowing that I wanted an aged goat gouda and the staff member who helped me was spot on with her recommendation. I ended up taking home a generous quarter pound of one year aged gouda (personal indulgence for the next few days) for only $ 5, so prices are also super reasonable. It seems like there are also some prepared foods, lox etc. that you can get in addition to satisfying your cheese cravings.
If you’re going for cheese remember to take a number when you get into the store!

Amazing cheese shop! Don’t get overwhelmed because they let you taste everything before you buy.

This place can’t get any better. You can buy boat-​loads of cheese or just a little sliver of cheese. I go with the latter. I usually come here for their pre-​packaged/​weighed/​wrapped cheeses when I need to throw a quick cheese plate together — there are an assortment of crackers (you name it, they have it!) and dried fruit and nuts all for a reasonable price if you ask me.
There’s also a soup and sandwich sort of station which I’ve never tried, but according to other review, I’m really missing out. I did, however, bring home two single serving (maybe?) sized trays of mac and cheese. I got classic and sundried tomato/​mushroom. I have to say, I don’t think the classic is that big of a deal, but the tomato and mushroom mac and cheese was out of this world! It made for a great side dish at dinner.
I look forward to trying more prepared foods from Murrays.

Came with almost no knowledge of cheese and cured meat pairing, met one of the most helpful staffs, Robert. He patiently recommended us a few types of cheeses and meat, and we love them all. Our final selections were: Romano (3 years), Across the Pond Keeley’s Cheese («Stinky» cheese), Sopressata and a prosciutto. Also bought the foie grass mousse spread, but I think this is too bland to my liking.
It was a cold Wednesday night, we are lucky it wasn’t too crowded. But remember to get a numbered ticket and wait for your turn.

I came here to attend a class called American Artisan Cheese 101 with Connor as our instructor. He is a superb instructor — very knowledgeable about the cheeses presented, and was also very informative; it truly was a Cheese 101 class — I left the class with tons of new knowledge on how cheese is made, the amount of care invested into making cheese, and just a renewed respect for cheese itself.
As the name suggests, our cheese palate consisted of only American cheeses, about 6 different types, which equated to about half a pound total tasted (now that’s a lot of cheese!). Now I am definitely not a cheese connoisseur, but this class really made me feel like one! We were asked to break open each of the cheeses, smell it, feel it, describe the taste — it was awesome and I really appreciated that Connor was so proactive in getting us to participate. We were also given a glass of red wine and rose (with unlimited refills by the way, AHEM), and a bunch of other foods to nibble on like bread, nuts, and dried fruits. Great complements to the cheeses!
The class was an hour and a half long and with a group of about 25 people — very chill and laid back, and very ideal for date night. I am extremely satisfied with the class and would love to check out some of the other different cheese classes! Just wanted to note that these classes don’t come cheap, so perhaps I won’t be returning for a while!

Go here for cheese. A wide selection of cheeses and specialty meats. Some of which are house aged or cured — deserved a five star score. Also have sandwiches and other miscellaneous food treats. Purchased some of the specially aged raw milk cheese from Vermont (can’t remember the name). — it was really good. Bummed I left it in the fridge and forgot to bring it as airplane snack.
Cheese server was not very friendly or helpful. Hence four stars overall.

I think I have bought cheese here 50+ times. As a result, Ive learned a lot about cheese. But my go to is still the same: describe what youre drinking. Hoppy IPA. California Cabernet. New Zealand Chenin Blanc. Whatever anyone brings to my apartment. Add any disclaimers: No goat cheese. Nothing over $ 20/​lb. Then take whatever they suggest, grab a baguette, pay the cashier, and enjoyyyyy.

Was there for the cheese tasting and it was great! In the shop they have a wide range of cheeses, meats and assortments to accompany them. If you are a fan of cheese then check this place out. There is also a lot of other great stores along the same street.

I received a gift this Christmas and I was excited, I love cheese! But most of the cheeses were off tasting and there were 5 pkgs of a soft Muenster that I gad to throw away it tasted bad and stunk. I think most of the cheese had gone bad. I wouldn’t order from them. Too bad my mom wasted her money.

Lovely place to grab a cheese plate and a bottle of wine with a friend or significant other. It may feel a bit on the pricier side, but cheese plates usually are, and the variety and quantity you’ll get here is worth it.

WARNING: Awful customer service and false promises.
I ordered an expensive array of cheeses as a present for Christmas, weeks ahead of time. When their online ordering system failed due to some issue on their end, I called and completed the order via phone. I had to pay for very expensive one-​day shipping, but was promised that it would arrive before Christmas. On December 23, I received a shipping notification, which was great since it would arrive on Christmas Eve. However, there was no tracking number.
Now these two things should have given me concern, but with all of the good reviews, I figured that it would show up and I shouldn’t worry. Christmas Eve comes and goes, no package. I try to call them and email them, but of course they are closed. They are also closed on Christmas Day and the entire weekend, so for four days I have no idea where this package is. On Monday, December 28, I receive a new shipping notification, this time with a tracking number. I also receive a very short email with NO apology, simply stating that the package was ever sent and that they were sending it now. I replied to voice my dissatisfaction, but of course «Courtney» never replied.
This has been a completely unprofessional, embarrassing, and frustrating experience. I would NEVER order from these people ever again. Overpriced cheese and shipping and get treated like garbage — no thank you.

A friend and I came here for the cheese tasting event titled «The Most Decadent Night Ever.» At $ 150 per person… I was skeptical. Should I make dinner arrangements the same night because I’ll pay all that money just to be starving after? The fat bastard in me had to wonder… so I sent an e-​mail out inquiring this.
For those of you wondering — NO, you will not leave hungry unless you want to simply taste. Many of the other people at the table did just decide to graze and listen to the instructors. A few of us, myself included, indulged and cleaned off our plates. Second servings of some items were offered as well.
Overall, I have to admit that this was one of my most favorite NYC/​YOLO events. Sip some wine. Indulge the senses. Laugh with the instructors and with the strangers having fun around you. It’s definitely an event I recommend to EVERYONE. Dan Belmont and Beth Ann Coulton were AMAZING. These people know what they’re talking about and welcome all kinds of questions. My friend and I aren’t the type to sip things and ask about the tannins. We just know what we like and what we don’t. This event was not douche-​y or snobbish in anyway.
Definitely give it a try! I know I’ll be coming back for another event in the near future. Thanks Dan and Beth Ann! It was worth every penny. You made my friend’s birthday awesome!

If this were the last shop on earth I ever entered, I’d die a happy man.
Phenomenal selections across the board in every category of every type of item they offer. Our personal cheesemonger was the coolest, chillest, awesome-​est, most knowledgeable person. Like… I woulda gladly met her for a beer afterward to keep talking cheese.
My friend knew what palates she wanted to quell, but needed suggestions. Our monger nailed every suggestion, knowing when to gives us that push with extra info, and when to let the cheese speak for itself. I spot once of my faves, excitedly told me friend to keep on her radar for her next visit… and a different monger — who overheard our cheese geekdom — popped open a brand new wheel, and surprised us with samples, without our asking!
Great butters, spreads, oils, taffy, charcuterie, and plenty of options at all price points. Sale items are clearly labeled to actually stand out, rather than be hidden, and no judgement given when you buy those options.
My ONLY issue was the great customer service ending at the register. Maybe just an off day with the woman there… and nothing to ruin the overall experience… but it is a bit of a bummer to end an awesome shopping spree with a distant, cold «send off».

Well worth a visit for a unique, dairy-​filled experience. Murray’s is a cheese shop and restaurant, but they have far more to offer. Homemade pasta, imported olive oil, balsamic jelly, hand crafted yogurt, organic milk. I was beyond impressed with their selections.
The sandwich counter has an interesting assortment of grilled cheese. I was able to sample most of them with some friends, and was somewhat disappointed by the blandness of the flavors. It was still delicious, but I expected more from a store that that specializes in cheese. There are so many bold imports that scream, «melt me in between two slices of buttery toast!» Murray’s inspires creativity and audacity. I’d like to taste more of that in their sandwiches.
If you want to pick out some nice cheeses from the deli counter, I recommend that you prepare your questions and ideas before asking to sample. The staff is knowledgeable but very intense.

For good quality cheese and meat products, Murray’s is really on a league of its own. The range of the cheese products is unrivaled in NY and they know how to store them, so in 8+ years of shopping from them I’ve never been disappointed with the quality of the cheese I’ve bought. In fact, shopping from Murray’s is a weekend chore I’ve happily taken over from my wife, as the whole experience is quite pleasant.
So why not a five star review? First — and maybe I’m being too spoiled here — but they carry a very limited choice of Portuguese cheeses. The absolutely divine zimbro is reliably present, but some of the other previously available gems — amarelo da beira baixa — have been absent for years now… The Spanish selection is quite excellent in general though another old favorite — torta del casar — seems absent this year…
Second — and this is for the meat — while some employees are excellent, others don’t do a great job slicing your orders, so the level of enjoyment varies based on who served you. At the prices they charge (which i find justified on account of the quality of the products), one should expect the meat products to be sliced to one’s preferences.

This review is for the mozzarella making class. They offer these classes a few times a month for about $ 100 a person. I think the price is definitely worth it!
You sit down to a full glass of red wine, a plate of cheese, and some nuts and dried fruit. Then the teacher pours a glass of prosecco. The wine is pretty much bottomless so drink up! By the time the class even started I was on my third. :)
The instructor was knowledgable, funny, and kept to only the facts to which a classroom full of drunken adults could focus their attention. After a few teaching points we tasted the cheeses on our plates. There were all different stages of mozzarella to try.
Then we get to the messy part. Yes, you will stick you hands in terribly hot water and massage some cheese curds. Then make farting noises. Such great fun! You end up making 2 mozzarella balls to bring home. Then he also gave us some curds to try making mozzarella again at home.
So fun! Go do this immediately! Bring the person you love! Great date night: interactive, low-​key.

A cheese dreamworld, and that’s not all. Simply delicious, melts, cheese, and meats… some of which from next door at Faicco’s Pork Store.
The parm sticks are to die for as is just about everything else I’ve had.
They sell everything else from craft beer to specially condiments, I just wish they were a little more forward with assisting and welcoming.

So I’ve been dying to check out this store for a while now but honestly, my first experience there wasn’t so great. I ordered a few items to go and it was burnt. I love eating fried cheese curd but they burned mine. I also noticed that all those fried items were pre-​fried and just reheated again in a small convection oven on a small cast iron for customers. I will give it another try again one day and hopefully the food would be better.
Otherwise the rest of the store have great variation of cheese, dips, meats, etc.

One of my favorite shops in the city. Awesome selection of cheese, and the people who work here make great recommendations.
Efficient system (grab a ticket number, numbers are displayed on the screens), and reasonable prices. If I had to recommend some cheeses, I’d recommend their fromager du affinois (a very creamy brie) or their gouda (can’t remember the exact name). This place is over half an hour away from where I live, but I’m here at least once a month to stock up. This is a must visit for any cheese lover.

Murray’s is a NY institution, and if you love cheese, you owe it to yourself to stop by. I won’t bore you with the details of all the different types of imported and domestic cheeses they have available.
But they also have charcuterie, meats, olives, Murray’s branded cheese boards, a respectable selection of beers, and a grilled cheese bar. Yum.
Go to Murray’s. You won’t be disappointed.

I’m tempted to just write, «See my review for the shop in Grand Central.» Essentially, I can say the same thing about both locations: great selection of wonderful cheeses.
But, wait, there’s more.
In addition to cheese (which still is their main product), there are various meats, coffees, and other tasty (and expensive) edibles.
Also, you can get sandwiches here. Surprise, surprise, they are cheese melts. I had a BBLT, which is a burrata (like a creamy mozzarella), bacon, lettuce and cheese. It was very good, and I do want to try the others, but if you want to go to a sit down place to enjoy their cheeses, I’d recommend Murray’s Cheese Bar, which is two doors away.
As with the Grand Central location, I’d warn that shopping here can get very expensive. That being said, this place is cheese-​vana.

Thought I’d review this place since its expansion. They have graduated from cheese to various takeouts.
Today, the «Cronut» with chocolate was perfect. Better than the plain which tasted very greasy. The chocolate has crunchy sugar glaze plus circles of chocolate on top and chocolate butter filling inside. They say it comes from Millefeiille down near Washington Square Park.
The cheese are still good. I also bought a tomato tart which I will eat tomorrow when I wake up late to have brunch inside my apartment. That and the cheese I bought would make a good brunch.
The staff here is friendly and helpful with a good sense of humor.
