CLOSED since about April 2015. A fairly reliable place for the many years of its existence.

The only thing I like at this restaurant is the mushroom miso soup(when it comes warm enough), the wet towel to clean your hands, and one of the waitresses is very sweet. The avocado salad was gross, too oily and flavorless, sushi-nothing to go back for, except the fancy presentation. However I liked coming here for a quick dinner when in the neighborhood but I won’t anymore. Last time we visited I ordered my regular soup and a sushi roll and we were told by a rude waitress that they have a $ 20 minimum and since there were 2 of us we had to order more food. What??? Never have I heard that in a restaurant before. We tried to explain to her that we had been here on multiple occasions and ordered exactly the same thing and that my friend wasn’t hungry or a fan of sushi. All she could shout in response was ‘We have a minimum !!’ I wanted to leave right away but my friend just ordered another roll to be nice. The place is always empty and I don’t think it will be in business for much longer. Unless they get rid of the rude waitresses and step up the quality of the food. Just make it taste as well as it looks Miyagi … And cut the MINIMUM, it’s ridiculous !!

Fresh fish, great ambiance and service! I’m picky with sushi and I eat here at least once a week.

Not as small as I expected from other reviews. The bento box is a pretty good lunch deal — the shrimp included in the tempura melted in my mouth, although the grilled mackerel was a little dry. The sushi was good & the wasabi might have been fresh. The service is very spacey– there were three tables filled and the waiter forgot my soup and took forever to bring my check. So not a place if you’re in a rush. Overall a nice little spot — the menu looks extensive with many vegetarian small plates I’d like to try.

Being a regular visitor to this excellent restaurant makes me eagerly anticipate my next visit. I always receive the best fish at the Sushi bar. The Sushi Chef is very pleasant and has a deep understanding of fish. My servers have also been knowledgeable and helpful in explaining the dishes as well. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who lives Sushi and other Japanese home style dishes.

authentic japanese restaurant. service was a little slow, given there were only 3 tables, but only one server. the food was pretty good but on the pricey side. good lunch spot if you need a decent meal in a low volume environment. restaurant is tucked away so it’s also hard to find. this place doesn’t get much foot traffic.

Their sushi is generally pretty good for the price and some of their main dishes are excellent. I would definitely go back. That said, service was a bit slow and not really the friendliest but it was a busy night for them so I will just chalk it up to an off night

Try the veggie dragon roll. Quite yummy — I love when something melts in your mouth and that’s exactly what this roll did. Ordered a second one which for me is quite the compliment as I tend to get full pretty quickly. The waitress was adorable and steered me away from the plain old avocado roll and I am glad she did. As my boyfriend said«is it the best sushi I have ever had? No. But it was flavorful and reasonable.» Does the décor need updating? Absolutely.

I was really hoping this cute Japanese restaurant was good since I’m in the area a lot. The gyoza were under par with a bitter aftertaste(too much cabbage). I ordered the chicken terrayaki and it was so dry that I couldn’t finish the last three-quarter of my meal. I feel bad giving this business a bad review but I wasn’t happy with any of my meal except the starter salad was good. And the coke and green tea I had was good. The service is friendly and the ambience is low key and cozy but other than that, the food was terrible. Maybe they are known for their sushi? I didn’t try it so maybe next time I’ll try the sushi and re-review this place. :o(

My husband walks past this restaurant all the time and has been wanting to come here. So we did last night. The ambiance is nice, low key and quiet. The waitress was very sweet. The appetizers were not very good, the server forgot our drink orders, lots of sand on my scallop sashimi, and a cockroach fell out of the menu. It was so fast… so fast. The piece de resistance is the chocolate shitstorm I’ve been enduring all morning, probably due to eating cockroach poop-infested sushi. Do yourself a favor and stay away

First and only experience was delivery, ordered through Food was ok. Delivery was supposed to arrive in 30 – 45 minutes. At 50 minutes I called to ask. She said«Sorry, it’s out already.» 30 minutes later i had to leave and ran into my food downstairs. He pointed our that I didn’t tip online. I explained I would have tipped cash but I no longer had time to eat because I had to leave. I hate that the delivery person had to suffer for a mistake on the restaurant’s part.

My favorite Japanese in the city — Friendly, real Japanese restaurant vibe(I lived 4.5 years in Japan and this feels very at-home for me) — Tasty authentic Japanese food– I’m always getting the chirashi sushi dinner with extra ginger, and they do an amazing eggplant and peanut sauce appetizer. Everything else looks amazing as well– I’m just a creature of habit — Beautiful setting– when it’s decent you can grab a table outside and be on a beautiful, relaxed w village street. If not the seating and atmosphere in the restaurant is lovely as well — Very reasonable prices, espec considering the aforementioned. My chirashi sushi dinner is $ 19, and the appetizer is about $ 7 I think — I come here only once every few months but they always remember me and my order, which is extra bonus points.

I have passed this place for almost 2 years now every Friday night, so I decided to stop by on my way home with a friend. Is quite small but the staff are friendly and the food was quite delicious. My seaweed salad was quite green and tasty, the fried octopus was not so good I didn’t really like that. I mean it was palatable but I wouldn’t order it again. And my cucumber roll with salmon and berry was quite different. Overall really nice place quiet and staff is really friendly. Ooohh my friend had no complaints. So definitely a return visit.

In the sea of Japanese restaurants in NYC which are owned and operated by other than Japanese, this is a quiet gem in the neighborhood. Daily sushi specials of cuts of fish you don’t always find in other restaurants(I always try one of the special fish there to broaden my palate). Reasonably priced and friendly service. They’ve also over the year, done some sprucing up which has not gone unnoticed by me, which is appreciated. It needed it! If you’re a West Village resident or frequent this neighborhood, this is a good choice for Japanese.

I lived in New York about ten years ago and ate here frequently. It was very crowded back then but now I don’t even know how they stay in business. When I ate here yesterday there was almost no one here and based on other reviews it seems like it is always this way. Anyway, I ordered the yamakake and nato hand roll there were both amazing and the price was pretty low.

I came by myself for a quick, light dinner. I ordered a spicy yellowtail roll, and the dumplings w/shrimp & pork. The service was quick and pleasant, albeit the place was essentially empty so I’d really expect nothing less than that. My sushi roll came out quickly and it was OK, nothing special. It was all I was looking for at the moment. The dumplings though were horrible. I have a pretty high tolerance to spice(be it peppers or wasabi) and this shit blew my freaking nose off after the first one! I thought that was a fluke so I tried a second one. Same reaction… I’ll stop there, thanks. In conclusion, stick to the sushi basics here and you won’t be disappointed.

Just had possibly the worst bowl of udon ever. They didn’t even use real udon noodles, but fettucini. Broth had no flavor, and it came with some rank lettuce in it. Will not be coming back

I’m so happy I didn’t smoke the grass wrapped around the wasabi before eating here, because the sushi lunch combo was the smallest dish I’ve ever ordered. On second thought, smoking the grass beforehand might have blunted the mediocrity of the meal overall. I had ordered out from here for dinner once before, and it was fine. This time, however, was a forgettable something else. The clue that something may have been amiss this time around was the one occupied table at lunchtime on a Friday afternoon. Once back at the office, I was limply greeted with four pieces of sushi and six pieces of the California roll, and everything was just bland. The shrimp was overcooked and dry, and the other items had very little flavor. The consistency of the fish was fine but I’m used to tasting something… anything. I would have rather paid a couple of dollars more for a better meal than what I had ordered here. The one exception was the miso soup, which actually saved this lunch from being a total write-off. But miso soup is the supporting actor, not the star, the latter which basically just texted in his performance in this lackluster drama. Rarely has my mouth ever been this bored. For fairly reasonably priced sushi, I much prefer The Lobster Place. But since my co-worker had a *bad experience* there, we’ll probably be spending more time at Blue Ginger.

I was last here in 11/2008, and many times before that. I always get great service and great food here. I don’t go any more because I’m not in the city as much, but some of the staff still remembers me. I’ve always had great sashimi and I always get the deluxe. The décor is pretty nice. They have the smallest rest room but whatever. The pricing is your average Manhattan price, pretty pricey, but I think it’s worth it. It’s one of my favorite Japanese spot in the city.
