I was so heart broken when I found out this place closed, I’ve been going here for years. It was the only Indian restaurant that implicitly trusted my instructions to make my food nuclear hot. Their martinis were a bargain. This was my favorite place to organize group dinners among my friends, I hope they find a new location to reopen soon.

Okay, so their service was so bad it was funny. We ordered from them on seamless, and, about an hour later, our food hadn’t come. We called to ask where it was, and they said it would be there in «a second». Ten minutes later, still no word. Trying to cancel the order, I called as they brought 4 different people to the phone. They then hung up, so we called two more times. They hung up both times. Still no food, 1.5 hours later, and on the hold with seamless customer service. Hopefully they won’t hang up on me.

This place is closed but I somehow ordered seamless last night. Was so disappointed. The last time I ordered from here was over a year ago, but the quality of the food entirely diminished. I got vegetable samosa and chicken tikka musala and both were so disappointing. Each of the two samosas was half the size they used to be and not crispy at all. Very bland flavor. The chicken was so much smaller and way to creamy and had half as much flavor. This used to be my go to Indian take out place, not anymore :( Still can’t explain how I ordered from here last night when apparently it’s closed.

Bummer because the food was pretty decent, but the customer service HORRIBLE! !! Food took 1 hour 30 min for a delivery radius of several blocks. Forgot items, and refused to address the error on their behalf. Frustrated and still a bit hungry..

This place got way way worse and very quickly. The first time we went it was delicious, this time, the quality was so poor. We were able to sit immediately on a Saturday night around 8. We ordered the exact same two dishes we each got last time because we had thought they were great. Not again. This place definitely adds sugar or corn syrup into every dish because it tastes oddly sweet. Vindaloo — this is supposed to be a spicy dish and she asked how spicy I wanted it and I ordered it at a 10 — the spiciest on their scale. It came out so mild, particularly for a vindaloo, that another person at our table who cannot tolerate spice tried it and could eat it. So I informed the waitress who said she would fix it. She brought back a dish that she claimed was a 15 on their spicy scale(their scale is 1 – 10 and I don’t have some crazy unheard of tolerance for spice for something). This time it literally tasted like a jar of spicy pasta sauce. It was basically a pureed tomato sauce, yes spicier than the first time, but still not as spicy as a vindaloo should be, and weirdly quite sweet. I would not ever get this vindaloo again — I mean they really truly butchered it. Rogan Josh — there was such an incredible lack of flavor in this dish. The only flavor added was sugar. It was way too sweet, not spicy at all, so bland and blah. There are way too many good Indian restaurants to go to, I won’t be back here unfortunately.

Mitali is alway fresh and delicious and they deliver within an hour, they used to have a Mitali West but it closed. Best Indian on Sixth Street.

Returned to Mitali after twenty years away last night — the food was just as good as I remembered. We had chicken malai and lamb jalfrezi. The chicken was sweet/savory, and the lamb was tender, spicy, and rich. All of the breads were perfect, especially the keema pakora. I was sad to see that the building is getting run down, but Mitali is still on point!

Mitali East is my favorite«Indian»(Bangladeshi) restaurant in New York. I have been eating there for more than 6 years and the food is consistently delicious. I am vegan so I have them prepare my dishes with oil instead of butter. My favorite items are: Papadom, Bhuija, Mulligatawny soup, Mushroom Shaag, Chapati and Poori. I have brought many friends and some family members who are not vegan and they have enjoyed their meals as well. I believe they ordered: Chicken Tikka, Jhalfrezzi, Shaag Curry and Vindaloo Curry. It’s really dark inside the restaurant but otherwise the ambiance is really nice. The staff is very friendly and they give great service.

My best friend introduced me to Mittali years ago, and since then I’ve returned countless times. Whether I’m grabbing lunch/dinner by myself or with a friend or two, they’ve always taken care of me here. They remember me by face and, for the most part, remember the types of things I like to eat(I particularly love the meat samosas, curries — vindaloo or dhansak — and their plain naan). The servers have always been extremely nice and patient with those of my friends who aren’t used to the cuisine, and readily answer all questions or make suggestions based on taste preference. Not to mention, service is extremely quick. Though the restaurant can get a bit busy during the weekends, they are never overly crowded and I’ve never had to wait to be seated. For me, the atmosphere is intimate and enjoyable, though some have mentioned that it can be a bit on the dark side as the sun sets. During the day, lighting isn’t an issue though.

We go to Mitali almost once a week, for our Indian fix of Lamb Korma, Briyani, and Garlic Naan. They never disappoint us, they are the very best.

I rather enjoy the food at Mitali East. Located in the basement of a building, you would think ambiance might lack, but you def get a real Indian vibe. Prices are fair although portion sizes aren’t huge and the food and spice level is on the money. Service has always been solid minus one thing… the bill. Both times I’ve been here, they’ve taken FOREVER to give us the bill. Is it a cultural thing? But for reals, like I sat and stared at the fiancé for a good 20 minutes before flagging homeboy down for the bill. Whatupwiththat? On to the food. The curry isn’t your typical curry and I dig. More tomato based, it has a good amount of heat, but not overpowering. My man thoroughly enjoyed the Malai Kofta, saying it may be his new fave Indian dish. Vegetable balls smothered in a creamy tomato sauce. Dipping my freshly made garlic naan in the sauce was incredible. If you’re feeling indulgent, might I suggest the Kurma? Your choice of vegetables or meat smothered in the most ridiculously creamy sauce with a hint of almonds. Drool. I would’ve spooned the sauce directly into my mouth if I didn’t fear the 5000 calories. The place is pricy, but the food is quite good. Minus the whole bill clusterf*ck, this place is spot on.

Came here on a Sunday afternoon as another Indian cuisine establishment across the street does not make certain dishes dairy free. I was a little concerned when I saw the restaurant completely empty, was the food any good? why are they empty? But I figured if give it a try. Was I happy I did. All the food was terrific. Just like homemade. I had the mushroom saag which was prepared dairy-free with rice, and Poori(?) Bahji. Amazing. My friend had the Lamd Kurma which I sampled. Also wonderful. Waiters were super attentive and pleasant. Atmosphere was so relaxed and cozy. This will def be my new go to Indian Spot

W, F and I came here since trying to find a place that W will eat at is a bit hard. F and I usually don’t care where, but W is a bit picky. I have to admit Indian food is on the bottom of my list of things to eat. I am not a huge fan of it and I hate becoming that lost puppy that don’t know what is what and what should I order. I remembered liking the Naan bread with Cheese, I didn’t see it on the menu and so I asked the waiter and he said he had it. The naan with cheese isn’t as good as Gandhi(I believe that’s where I tried it!) It tasted like the regular Naan that W ordered. We ended up sharing the other following dishes: Shrimp Tandoori — W ordered this, I wasn’t going to order seafood from a place where I am not quite sure about their reputation, but surprisingly the shrimp was a good size. This dish was my favourite out of the ones that I have tried and loving the green sauce that they provide to you with your menu. Vindaloo Curry Chicken — I saw someone recommending this dish and I am sorry, but it wasn’t a good curry dish. Perhaps because the chicken was so dry, I find no matter how what kind of chicken dish I get at an Indian restaurant, it is always super dry. Dry chicken are the worst! Spinach and Chickpeas — this was good. I am going to try to eat more Indian food, just to become better acquainted with the food and next time I’ll know what I like and what I don’t.

I came here with a big group(10) for lunch today but we had a reservation. A few of us arrived about 10 minutes early and we were led to our table. The owners of the now closed Calcutta work here. One remembered my face but I don’t think anyone else in our party, including my brother who probably comes way more than I do. The way the menu is organized, some of the curries are just listed and then you pick your protein for that curry. I ordered the Chicken Jalfrezi. One person ordered chicken vindaloo. 2 people ordered the Tandoori mixed Grill. One person ordered the chana saag. For appetizers, meat samosas, vegetable samosa, and banana pakora was ordered. They have a full bar, We had ordered 2 bottles of white zinfandel, one at a time. When we were nearly done with the first bottle By the end of the afternoon we had also ordered 4 bottles of the Taj Mahal beer to share between the three gentleman at the table, myself included. The jalfrezi was hot but still flavorful. They used the Thai bird chilies from what I could tell and maybe some other hot peppers. For dessert, a few ordered the mango ice cream and one person ordered gulab jamun. The waiter was very attentive to our table.

My friends recommended this place, and while it was overall pretty tasty, I have definitely had better. We had the following: Bhujia fritter– Overcoooked, to where they were almost burnt. When you tried to cut into it, it shattered, and you had to drown it in sauce to have any flavor Lamb Roganjosh– One of the better things we had, but the quality, and quantity of the meat was lacking. Chicken vindaloo– Another solid dish, with PLENTY of heat. We asked for heat level 5, from 1 – 10, and it was KICKING! I was sweating, in a good way, but I’m glad I didn’t go any higher. Mushroom Shaag– Not the super mushy Shaag(I’m used to seeing it spelled Saag, but whatever) that you normally see. This was nice and fresh. Aloo motor gobi– This was pretty good, nothing fancy. Considering we had 4 entrees, the size of the rice they gave us was pitiful… Come on people, rice is the cheap filler, no need to skimp on that. I would definitely try another place on my next visit. Plus they forgot our cucumber raita, and actually hesitated for a minute when we asked them to remove it from the bill.

We used to live in Manhattan and whenever we come back, we like to hit some of the old establishments we used to frequent. We were in town this past week and came back to Mitali which was always a fave of my wife’s. The service from the older manager was quite aggressive. He kept pushing appetizers and condiments. When you said no, he would insist! We still declined, but why the hassle? Not cool. I ordered a Lamb Vindaloo. It came out Beef. I know what Lamb tastes like, no matter how you spice it. I told them I thought it was Beef. He took it away, brought it back half empty, and insisted it was Lamb! I tried a piece and of the 3 or so remaining pieces, one was Lamb! ITWASBEEF! AND he acted all insulted about it. It still ended up on the bill despite them dumping half of it. Sheesh! The rest of the food was OK. Just beware the hard sell and NEVER order the Lamb. Unless you spell Lamb B.E.E.F.

This Bengali restaurant is wonderful! This walk-down restaurant is set amongst a sea of other Indian restaurants along 6th Street in the East Village. The ambiance is delightful with red and gold sequined curtains separating the dining rooms, and white tablecloths and candles at every table. The noise level is fairly average, and it would have been nice to have some music playing in the background. APPETIZERS: The menu is extensive and extremely reasonably priced. We tried several appetizers and enjoyed them all. The sheek kabob is juicy and tasty. The lamb and chicken tikka were both good, though a little heavy in the tomato paste. The shrimp was good, and the poori bread they serve it with is light and fluffy. MAINENTREES: I had the vegetarian combination which was a nice, and largely portioned, assortment that included motor ponir, mushroom shaag, aloo motor gobi, as well as naan and bread. It was more than enough food, and I even had plenty to take home with me to enjoy the next day. DESSERT: We split the gulab jamun — it was straightforward and good, but nothing to write home about. WINE/BEVERAGE LIST: They had an adequate selection of wines. I enjoy a good red zinfandel with Indian food, but they only had one Zin on the menu(a Barefoot Zin) which was okay. They also have a good selection of specialty cocktails, and a surprising selection of dessert ports and cognacs, if you’re into that sort of thing. SERVICE: The service was slow and relaxed. We enjoyed several courses and it took us about 2.5 hours from start to finish. Some people don’t like spending such a long time at dinner, but we enjoyed the opportunity to sit and relax. Would definitely go here again!

The food at this particular Curry Road establishment isn’t the problem; it’s the service. When we arrived, we were only one of two tables in the restaurant, but both tables were seated right by the window, giving the impression that the the restaurant was full, even though it was not. The temperature was stuffy. Our server was very pushy about what were ordered. We had ordered a $ 11.95 curry dish and then he proceeded to offer us a $ 16.95 special. After we told the waiter that we would split a Taj Mahal beer, he asked us if we wanted one or two. One of the waiters spilled the remainder of my beer on the ground. When we ordered naan, the waiter asked if we wanted three of them. While regaling my companions with life stories, I was rudely interrupted by the waiter who asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu. The raison d’être, however, occurred at bill time. I was signing the credit card slip when the waiter approached our table, thanked us, and attempted to pull the pen from my hands while I was still in the process of signing the bill, a bill on which I left a well-undeserved twenty percent tip. I refused to surrender the pen and check book and placed it in the middle of the table as a passive aggressive way of demonstrating my frustration. I then ripped up the copy of the receipt he left and placed it in my empty mango ice cream dish. Cultural difference notwithstanding, it is extremely uncouth to collect a bill from a table before the patrons have left the restaurant, let alone before they are even done singing it. I was appalled. I will never, NEVER, come back here.

I don’t know why a Bengali restaurant is labeled«Indian, Pakistani,» but that cavil aside, I have much larger bones to pick. I can’t in good faith give this place one star, because the food is not bad. However, it’s also not spectacular. It’s certainly not good enough to overlook the numerous faults. As other reviewers have wrote, Indian restaurants-Pakistani, Anglo-Indian, Bengali-line the block on which Mitali is located. There are undoubtedly ones which serve tastier fare-although as I indicated, the food itself is not my primary objection-which is why I don’t understand how the restauranteurs have not managed to improve upon the non-food aspects of their establishment. The kitchen staff appears to have been hand-selected from ex-employees of the Indian Railways and/or the British National Health Service, so prepare for a late evening if you’re booking reservations. The wait staff oscillates between forced obsequiousness and undisguised rudeness. The ambience leaves something to be desired-embroideries and ceiling carpets don’t do much for me, alas. If you’re simply interested in eating food-regardless of how dilatory the service is, or the sort of atmosphere in which it’s served-then by all means head to Mitali. Otherwise, I’d suggest checking out one of the other 500 odd restaurants on this block that serve nearly identical cuisine.
