Sad to give it 3 stars because I was really looking forward to a satisfying grill cheese! Service was fast, staff was very kind, and shop has good amount of seating. The sandwich just didn’t hit the spot. I tried the valley thunder, and the summerset. I felt the flavors were very mild, and lacked texture — not much crunch from bread. Overall blah :(

3.5 stars I came here after eating a lunch size pie of pizza from Keste. I ordered the Melter skater hoping for a satisfying grilled cheese sandwich and I wasn’t impressed. The cheese was amazingly gooey and the bread was toasty but it tasted too simple. After eating a heck lot of grilled cheese sandwiches, it’s simple to tell what is off the top and what is lame. This was in the middle since the bread texture was crispy and the cheese was gooey. It came with a bag of chips that I was not interested in. The service was fast. There’s free water and limited seats.

Honestly, it seems like a strange idea for a restaurant to specialize in grilled cheese; however, Meltkraft took a chance, and seems to do it quite well. I got their grilled cheese with mac and cheese and pulled pork; overall, the bread was a little tough to get through, and it was fairly greasy. The portion size was extremely generous though, and honestly it was pretty good. The chips that come with the sandwich don’t really add anything though, they’re just simply there. Not a bad deal for this interesting take on classic comfort food, worth a shot if you’re in the mood.

I love a grilled cheese when I’m craving some comfort food and I thought I would love Meltkraft. But I have to say I am slightly disappointed. I ordered the Brielle($ 8.25) to share with a friend. I couldn’t really taste any of the cranberry chutney that I was looking forward to, or the toasted pine nuts that are supposed to be in the sandwich. The brie and caramelized onions were very prominent and still made a decent grilled cheese, but not what I was expecting. Aside from that, the sandwich was also pretty oily and slightly burnt. It could just be our sandwich because I saw a few other customers’ sandwiches and they looked fine. The service is pretty fast and the staff is friendly. There’s are a good amount of bar seats but can be a little cramped if it gets busy. Note that the store is very narrow as well. While I was there, the garbage was also piled all the way to the top. I felt so bad I had to stack my box on top of what was already there. The staff should check frequently and clear out the trash because the empty grilled cheese boxes can fill the garbage very quickly.

Love the décor, music and staff. However, I was underwhelmed by the Valley Thunder. Sounds and looks amazing but the flavor combinations just don’t work in my opinion. It was a very hearty sandwich though, I was full for a while afterwards. Will come back to try something else because I love the atmosphere, but the sandwich was just«eh.»

Sandwiches themselves are too oily. And I would say that combination of taste could be better. A good thing that the portion is huge. But the worst thing was that I was waiting for 20 Minutes instead of promised 8. Really regret that I tipped anything at all. A total disappointment.

This is the kind of place that you wish was always a stone’s throw away on a snowy day or a rainy evening. Comfort food to the max, with big gooey sandwiches made on toasty bread. While I’ve enjoyed sampling some of their more exotic concoctions, they always end up being a little daunting(albeit exciting) and I like to stick with a classic grilled cheese. That, paired with their nicely salted chips is an amazing lunch to make any belly happy. Packaging makes for handy takeout when on-the-go, and don’t forget to admire the quirky wall art on your way out. Baaaaaaa.

Delicious soup and sandwiches, and the staff is super friendly and efficient. I’ll be coming back ASAP to try some of their inventive menu items. Even their classic grilled cheese and tomato soup is amazing. Way to go guys!

I am a big fan of grilled cheese. However, Meltkraft was extremely disappointing. I was dying to try this place out and it wasn’t as good as I expected. I ordered the classic and had bacon added onto my sandwich. My boyfriend ordered the brielle. It just didn’t taste good at all. The cheese had a really bad aftertaste to it and was undercooked. He agreed. Plus his bread was overdone. The only postive thing about this place was the soda. I don’t know where they get it from… but its amazing. It’s not normal fountain soda. Pretty upsetting that I liked my soda/drink better than the actual food.

Well that was completely disappointing. Had this place on my «list» for a while now as I love grilled cheeses. Located in the heart of drunk-food street, this would have been a great spot if the food was good. Ordered the Valley Thunder w/chips and Boylan’s Ginger Ale($ 10ish). Food took about 8 minutes to come out… they probably should haven taken longer. Took a bite on the side — only get melted cheese — so I took a big bite in the middle and was greeted by unmelted cheddar and cold brisket. Not sure what happened here but it didn’t taste good at all. My options were a) have them reheat, which would have resulted in burnt bread b) have them make a new one, though I hate wasting food c) finish it and hope ginger ale masks the flavor. I went with C. Tempted to put one star, yet I feel like this may have been an off day, plus the Boylan’s was pretty good. Can’t say if I want to come back.

This place really hit the spot. I appreciated the great quality cheese, above average bread, good portion sizes and the marvelous produce that was on my sandwich. The ideas are incredibly unique, too, which was nice, since this area has gotten a little homogeneous(with some notable exceptions). Even though I’m not huge on the brand myself, I admire places that only offer Boylan’s sodas, and not the major cola brands, too. The ambiance of these place was nice, as well. I really liked the videos of cute sheep, particularly knowing that’s where the milk came from, not the meat in back. It’s a little small, yes, but all the food is prepared in sturdy too go boxes, so you can eat it on the go if there’s no room.

The grilled cheese portions here are huge. Seriously thought I had gotten 2 sandwiches or something. Comes with a side of potato chips. Opted for the classic because I wanted something simple and I was not disappointed. It was cheesy and cheap. The deluxe options are a bit pricier, but still reasonable. I’ll definitely come back for their grilled cheese. Also got the tomato soup because grilled cheese and tomato soup together are heaven. Soup wasn’t good. Didn’t finish it.

Absolute fatty indulgence but holy hell that Thunder Valley grilled cheese was one of the best damn things I’ve ever eaten. Perfectly grilled with the right ratio of saltiness to break up the fattiness. Cute packaging/store fit out to boot. Pro tip: unless you’re like a big guy, half a sandwich is probably more than enough for a serving(it comes with chips as well). Recommended for hangovers, or just like a regular meal.

Mother of grilled cheeses! These guys take the beloved classic to a whole new awesome level with their creations. To start, all of their ingredients are locally sourced and of very high quality, especially the cheeses.(as you would expect) if you are an indulgent eater, you MUST try the Valley Thunder. It’s a grilled cheese with cheddar, MACANDCHEESE and BRISKET inside! To top it all off, they grill it with a ton of butter so it is perfectly golden. It’s just delicious, a totally sinful lunch alternative to all of the salads that surround us and secretly judge our eating habits. The place itself is tiny(tucked into a tiny crevasse on Macdougal) so I usually take out. Very convenient location for fellow NYU students, and they accept cards!

Melt Kraft is one of the places that makes New York unique. It’s a new shop to Greenwich Village centered around grilled cheese sandwiches. I have yet to come across anything like it, and have never had a grilled cheese this good before. Of course, it’s nothing like the one your mom used to make with single slices of plastic wrapped American Kraft cheese but we are ok with that. Listen to the description of their valley thunder standwich, it’s as good as it sounds… Valley Thunder’(12 month) cheddar, Bubbe’s brisket and baked macaroni &(our) cheese. Served with Covered Bridge Kettle Chips. Melt Kraft is one of the places that makes New York unique. It’s a new shop to Greenwich Village centered around grilled cheese sandwiches. The family that owns the shop gets their cheeses from their farm. From start to finish the are able to control what goes into their food and how’s the animals are treated and it you can taste the difference in the quality. The shop is conveniently located right by Washington Park, the comedy club, and NYU, so make sure to stop by if you find yourself in the area.

This is a nice new spot in the village, good taste and interesting mix. I usually order the Brielle a bit savory. with some cranberries and pine nuts, and ask the guys to add to it chicken.

Obviously was debating between the Brielle and Thunder Valley for more time than any normal person should, because these are the important decisions in life. I went with the Brielle and I’m so glad I did! — grilled cheese with Brie cheese, cranberries, carmalized onions, and pignola nuts. Absolutely delicious, and my friend and I were shocked how much it filled us up the rest of the day(we didn’t need to have a «2nd dinner» like we joke we normally do hours later). I was surprised to find I liked it a little more than the Melt Shop– now I have two favorites to satisfy my cheese /carb cravings. Wish this place was bigger, feel like it’d be a real hit around lunchtime but it’s pretty small with counters with high stools that fits probably about 10 people max. I’ll be back to try the Thunder Valley soon! :)

Went to melt kraft for lunch yesterday. My friend and I split two different grilled cheeses and they were a huge disappointment. First of all, the classic shouldn’t even be on their menu if you are going to present it and serve it so carelessly. It was just this thin square of bread with very little cheese so I didn’t taste cheese in it at all. The thunder grilled cheese(their best seller according to the girl at the counter) was really not all that special to me or my buddy. We also ordered two soups. Both were ok for dipping to add flavor to my bland grilled cheese but once you have over 3−4oz of it, your body won’t want it anymore because it’s too damn sweet. How do you serve super sweet tomato soup? Honestly ! They have 3 locations? Really? SODISAPPOINTED. Get your stuff together MELTKRAFT THe extra star goes for their staff who did a good job taking my order and entertaining me while I waited for my food.

I think I just died and went to grilled cheese heaven. I wasn’t the kid in college who made them on a foreman grill, so when I envision grilled cheese I remember that crap we used to get in the high school cafeteria. Boy was I impressed at this place. I ordered the Red, White and Blue(Italian) grilled cheese, which had mozzarella, tomato and arugula. It was as my friend(Juliane L.) described: like eating pizza. I nibbled on some of the potato chips on the side, and also sipped on a ginger ale. While $ 9.25 sounds pretty hefty for this combination, I assure you after that first bite of cheesy goodness you’ll be thanking me. I also sampled the(forgot the name) grilled cheese with brie, caramelized onion, cranberries and pignola nuts. I never thought you could mix so many items into it but this was extremely delicious. I left very surprised at how tasty both sandwiches were. Seriously, MacDougal between West 3rd and Bleecker has become like a playground for drunk eaters. You have indian food(multiple), falafels(mamouns), pizza(artichoke), hot dogs(crif dogs), cookies(insomniac) and now grilled cheese. You tell me what the healthiest choice is;)

Omg this was so so so delicious! Came here later during the evening so they were out of the Mac and cheese/brisket sandwich that we would have gotten but we happily ended up splitting a Brie, caramelized onion, cranberries and pignola nuts grilled cheese. To. Die. For. Every bite was decadent and the flavors were utterly complementing one another and by the end of my triangle, I only wished I hadn’t split it cause I could have eaten an entire one and another one. Haha. My friends(the famous twins) gave me a bite of the tricolor melt(mozzarella, tomato and arugula) one, it really should have been called the pizza one, and it was delicious! Love this place, awesome addition to macDougal. A perfect drunken night would have to end at the MeltKraft. Great delivery, nice staff, you can’t go wrong with a grilled cheese sandwich.
