Reaaaallly cranky lady on second floor. Seriously. If you don’t want anyone on the second floor, make a sign that says so.

I saw a delightful little Terry Winters show here last week – all small works, pages torn from textbooks or other informational text materials with colorful charts and diagrams printed on transparencies and laid over the top. Very nice to look it. I hadn’t even been planning to come to this show but the gallery is on street level and has all glass on the front wall, which is a great way to welcome visitors. This review refers to the gallery at 502 W 22nd St. but I couldn’t find a Unilocal entry for that location so I’m putting my review here. Matthew Marks has several locations all over Chelsea and I’d say that the quality is pretty consistent among them.

The Matthew Marks gallery felt oddly empty for the recent Charles Ray show(Nov 14 — Jan 19). Of the three pieces, one(a large green plastic tractor) physically dominated and one was prone to overlook some of the smaller sculptures. I don’t know if Marks’ style is to only show a few selected pieces, or if this was unique to the show. While Ray’s pieces provided food for thought, I would have liked to see more.

Consistently good artists and exhibits. Consistently annoying staff.
