Wow, the most interesting gift shop I have ever seen – and I have seen many. Cool cool stuff

I went into the store three separate times to purchase gifts for housewarmings and a birthday, and was never greeted, asked if I needed help or even acknowledged. At one point I was looking at an item and wanted to know more but there are no prices on anything. Pretty merchandise but I will take my business elsewhere that has customer service and respect for their patrons.

This is an interesting store with many unique and interesting items. I’d rate it higher except: 1) No one greeted or asked our group if we needed any help. It just felt a little odd to walk through an empty store and not get acknowledged by the two people behind the counter. 2) Nothing is priced. Perhaps that means I cannot afford anything in the place, but it’s tough to shop and not have any idea what the prices are. I saw a dozen interesting items, but I didn’t want to bother the people busy ignoring us to ask what each was priced. Mantiques Modern seems more like an open warehouse for someone’s interior design business than an actual décor and antique shop. I’m not sure if I was supposed to drag an indifferent employee around with me asking, «How much is that?,» «And that?,» «And that?» a hundred times, but it didn’t seem worthwhile. As a result, this was more like visiting an interesting tiny museum than an actual store.

They quote wildly different prices for the same item to different people… and different in person than online. They don’t have a price on any of their items — so that they can change the price to whatever they believe they can get away with to the person asking. Simply are not credible or honest in their dealings. Would find a more honest seller to buy antiques or any item from than these folks.

Interesting space to walk through. Many of the items seem to be handmade sculptures with an antique feel.

It really is an awesome store, very cool and unique stuff inside. I had seen this store featured a few times on tv and magazine and was super excited to visit on my trip to NYC. Everything is very overpriced. Which is fine! They had some good stuff that would be okay for a splurge. When I finally got to the store, I went inside and was greeted by nobody. There were 3 associates working in this small, quiet store and I walked around for a good 15 minutes without even being spoken to. No one asking if I was looking for anything, not even a hello. Thats just bad business. I was excited to buy some things for my desk but just left instead because I really didnt feel like giving any business to these guys.

I take exception to the name of this place. Many of the items in this shop and their 1stdibs storefront look like they could have come out of my apartment or I could visualize them there in my minds eye. If my design aesthetic includes bold eclectic statements and natural and historic oddities, does that make me ‘man’ly? I think not. I have to believe that just means we— Mantiques Modern and I— share good taste.
