Kam-Wei Kitchen

Like most New Yorkers, I’m no stranger to cheap Chinese food. I’ve had my fair share of late night egg rolls, house special fried rice and schezwan chicken. Some has been good, and some has been not so good. Unfortunately Kam-​Wei falls into the latter. Deciding to take a chance on a new place I went to get a take-​out dinner for my girlfriend and I after seeing Something Rotten on Broadway, which, by the way, was AMAZING!
I ordered hunan chicken and schezwan beef, with a few egg rolls and a big hot n’sour soup, our regular staple which we usually get down the street at Foo King (yes, you read it right), the other Chinese place in Hell’s Kitchen on 10^th Ave.
My wait for the order was literally 26 minutes. I timed it. Much longer than it should have been, especially given that the place wasn’t busy at all. From what I saw, they only had one cook in the kitchen. Once I finally got my order I ran home to devour it, but once we started it was hard to finish. The chicken was overcooked and literally tasteless, and the rice was clumped together in a ball. The beef wasn’t too much better. It reminded me of when you had Chinese food in High School at the cafeteria. Très mal! The egg rolls were simply inedible. The saving grace was the hot n’sour soup, which was actually pretty good.
I don’t like to give bad reviews, but this place is hardly worthy of 2 stars. We were both very disappointed and won’t ever be going back. Lesson learned. If you want good quick cheap Chinese food, just walk up 4 blocks to Foo King!

Really nasty kitchen. They don’t know food handling. Dirty dirty dirty… Touch money then touch food. Scratch head touch food again. Most disgusting restaurant!!! I don’t think NO SAFE.

As far as your standard run of the mill, hole in the wall Chinese joints go, this place is on par, if not better. Prices are right, food is solid, and to top it all off, the woman at the counter is very easy on the eyes :)
Oh yeah, the Fried Half Chicken is finger lickin good!

This is the Chinese takeout I have on speed dial. Good portions, good price. Food is nothing special, but its tasty and I always have left overs for the next day. My favs are the boneless sparerib with pork fried rice, and their Chicken Curry is great too. Delivery is FAST!

The hotel concierge recommended this restaurant. The food was delivered as ordered and was not bad. It just wasn’t great either.
The hot and sour soup was not as spicy as I would expect and had large globs of tofu in it. The shrimp with garlic sauce had a good mix of large shrimp and veggies but the sauce was bland. Everything tasted a little more greasy than I would normally expect.
Overall, prices were standard for a typical Chinese place and were much more inexpensive than I expected for NYC. A pint of hot and sour soup and a pint of shrimp with garlic sauce (with a side of brown rice) was $ 9.

would not even give a star but that’s the only choice… ordered shrimp fried rice, general chicken, chow fun noodles, delivery time was decent. Lady taking order was very rude and don’t like to explain if you have a question about the items (she even commented OMG). Was looking forward to late night Chinese food, but the food was one of the worst taste. Food was a double EEk! Very bland and fried rice very plain, no eggs, no vegi’s, eek! Better stop there, don’t have nothing nice to say about the food. Definetly not going back and would not recommend this to anyone, not even to my worst enemy… Yes, that’s how bad it is.

Kam Wei Kitchen… I want to like you, I really do… but your food is bland.
I’ve lived in the neighborhood for years, and I’ve ordered from here a number of times.
Every time I do, I remember why it’s been awhile since I have.
Hot and sour soup is neither hot nor sour… just bland broth with globs of tofu.
Lo mein is greasy and just tastes like oil. Take out packed without utensils.
There are plenty of Chinese restaurants in the area. Pass this one by.

Love their food, but it’s cash only. If they take credit card, I would order them more often. They made mistake in my order once, but it was ok ’cause the food was still good.

Good food but very unprofessional. Called just now and a little toddler answered the phone who couldn’t speak english. I thought maybe someone would take the phone away, but no, the little kid was trying to take my order but couldn’t speak english. A couple of weeks ago, same things, some guy answered the phone and couldn’t speak of lick of english. I spent every part of 5-​minutes repeating that I wanted 10 chicken wings and large fries. They passed the phone around and no one could speak english. Apparently, the person who normally answers the phone wasn’t there. But how do you run a business when only 1 person can speak english. Then at least 3 different occasions, they bring my delivery but forget the soda. I have to wait for the delivery person each time to go back and return with the soda. That’s my fault for not checking the delivery on arrival, but who wants to do that every time. You would think they’d know to include all of your items in the delivery. I won’t even speak about how they once completely brought me the wrong order because someone else called and placed an order but they thought it was me, so they cancelled my original order and brought me someone elses. Really pathetic.

Not any better than any of the other fast food Chinese places in the area.

This place is legit. The food is a really great deal, like lunch-​special-​at-​dinner-​time good. Fast, cheap, hot and crispy. A take out dream come true. Cash only!

Not from NYC and no chinese food connoisseur but this place fit the bill of delicious, cheap, quick and convenient take out. Portions were good and the staff was friendly enough… the little boy (son of the owner? manager?) who skips about the dining area was crazy friendly, cuddling up next to hubby to watch him browse Facebook as our order was prepared.
Again, not from NYC but we were looking for quality chinese food outside the chaos of Times Square where we had the misfortune of staying the night. This place delivered. Will try to stop by next time I return.

I recently started working at a client site near Port Authority. I came here dreading the fact that now I was so close to Times Square, where all the tourists bump up food prices by at least a couple of dollars.
After trying out the places around me, Burger King, Papaya Dog, Chipotle, I wandered into this Chinese restaurant one day just looking around.
I don’t regret it at all. Lunch specials being so cheap and giving so much food (I had enough for two meals!) is the way to go.
The food itself is good too, I usually can’t complain about Chinese takeout places, it’s the standard stuff, hard to screw up. When I went, there were quite a number of people in there, pretty popular place.

Yes, my lunch special was cheap and large, which usually counts for a lot in my book, but the garlic sauce lacked any spice or garlic flavor.
I enjoyed the wontons in the wonton soup – they had a bit of ginger in them which was a nice surprise. The broth was a saltapalooza though, so maybe next time I’ll get wonton soup, hold the soup.

For cheap, fast Chinese in this neighborhood, I don’t think you can beat this place. And I dare you to try to find nicer people to take your order over the phone.

Nothing really special about this place; just your run of the mill Chinese take out. I ordered the sweet and sour chicken with plain fried rice. The rice and chicken were good, but I received a half full container of cold sauce.
Really?
My chinese food shouldn’t see the inside of a microwave unless I’m eating leftovers the next day.

Today was Sept. 11^th — the 10^th anniversary of the horrific collapse of the World Trade Center. After a full and emotional day of remembering the bravery of the heroes of ⁹⁄₁₁ and those lost in the tragedy, and after an afternoon of watching a show on Broadway and taking a reflective stroll along the High Line, we were beat and needed something quick, filing, yet wholesome. Two and a half out of three criteria ain’t bad is it? Where does the half come from you ask? Well, it’s hard to qualify this Chinese dive as wholesome, but after I watched the folks cook my food right in front of me like my mom might have made it, and tasted the homeyness of it all, I say it deserves at least half a point for wholesome.
Dive-​y, befitting this part of Hell’s Kitchen on 10^th Ave, New Kam Wei is not unlike other Chinese fast-​food take-​out in this area. The food here is fairly tasty and well-​made for this small hole-​in-​the-​wall. The beef was a little tough in the beef with eggplant in garlic sauce, which btw, was made-​to-​order, but the «Dragon and Phoenix» which is shrimp, lobster, and chicken with snow peas, water chestnut, and baby corn was really good. Hard-​working family-​owned business worth patronizing. Don’t let the little 4-​foot, 8 year-​old girl behind the counter who might grill you about your order or method of payment frighten you. Her bark is much worse than her bite. Cash only.

Excellent hole-​in-​the-​wall Chinese place. I have tried many dishes here and they are all extraordinary and reasonably priced. It is definitely family run and the little girl who «works» there is wonderful and attentive.
They deliver in what seems like warp speed as well!

One of the things I have come to find out living in NYC… it’s definitely cheaper to eat out than it is to buy groceries and cook. And take it from me, who at times likes to cook because it’s a great relaxing hobby.
And this is where Kam Wei comes in. One night, venturing out with friends, I noticed this little hole in the wall restaurant. Family owned and operated, the food here is great, fast, decently priced. Throw in decent service, and presto.
Now, I must admit I have never eaten here. But then again, I live around the corner. Considering how small and tight it is inside, I would rather take out.
But hey, it’s about the food. The quick access to it. And from my friend Kimmie S.‘s feedback on their Singapore Mei Fun… it’s delicious.
Yup…definitely going back for more on this one. So if you live in Midtown West and are craving cheap quick Chinese food… give them a try! They even deliver!

Dear Kam Wei Kitchen,
You probably help feed our apartment 30% of all our meals this year… I love your lunch special and your combination dinners, you are quick to our door, and you always bring me 2 hot sauce packets, I really appreciate you, I wish I could tip you more for the quick service and delicious flavor. But I’m poor, that’s partly the reason I order from you, because although your price is cheap, your flavor is not. I realized while writing this letter, that I miss you, and like Lady Antebellum… I need you now. I will call you now… I hope that’s ok…
