I have blond in my hair, and it is natural. It was very dry and didn’t have the vitality it was use to. John transformed my hair but cutting all the dead ends off, put a high end conditioner in it, used a light setting lotion, sat me under the dryer and transformed Marilyn Monroe into me. Everyone stopped me to say my hair was beautiful.(As a Los Angeles Girl, I thought New Yorkers didn’t speak to strangers). He is ABSOLUTELY the best! Thank you John.

Just had another GREAT appointment at John Atchison Salon. I have been a customer for about 25 years. I must admit, I did leave the salon for about a year. What a mistake. When I returned, I was welcomed back, like a long lost family member. They put my damaged hair back on course. No criticisms, just a let’s make it right attitude. And they did. I see Bernada for my relaxers and Mr. A for my cut and style. You can count on a professional and friendly atmosphere. No drama!!!

I Strongly Recommend!!! The Best place for a Precision Hair Cut and Healthy Hair Care! Done in Excellence by a Professional Staff… A few years ago I came in with my hair badly damaged. It was over processed and I had random short patches of hair. My shoulder length hair had to be cut. I felt and looked Amazing today my hair is(Natural and) longer than it was when I first came in. Hair stylist Jev-Vern suggested affordable products for daily upkeep. I’m a loyal client because I see and love the results. PS If you have a 2pm appointment you will be seen at 2pm not 4:30pm!

This salon was highly recommended by a friend to treat my mother to some Mother’s Day pampering. First impression over the phone when calling in to get information about services they offered and which would be best for my mother, the receptionist was extremely patient and helpful with this clueless man just trying to do something special for his mom. She assured me the environment was very pleasant and professional and non catty unlike the idea most would have about a black hair salon. I was even able to purchase a gift certificate over the phone and have it mailed to her. When I brought her in for her appointment I was pleasantly surprised by the pretty girl at the front desk, the instant warm welcoming of hello’s and smiles by all the staff, the assortment of fruits and cake being served for guests and even the light sounds of gospel jazz playing! She was greeted by her stylist quickly and went off to get pampered. I was able to get a reasonable 2 hours time to come pick her up which was mind boggling when all these years I thought it was a mandatory rule women must spend at least 4 hours in a salon. I got back in 2 hours and she was all done, full of smiles and looking amazing with the sharpest cut I had ever seen. Mr. Atchison did an amazing job, not one strand out of place! All and all she and I were both pleased and it was a job well done on everyone’s part.

I have always loved my individual stylists at the salons I’ve gone to in the past, but the salons themselves were hot messes, even the ones where some of the more in-demand operators charged relatively high prices — entire Grand Guignols of staff drama enacted in front of the customers, messy stations, squabbling over sinks due to failure to coordinate re: when chemicals and color went on and needed to come off, food everywhere, unattended kids constantly underfoot, and you really could spend the whole day getting your hair done because stylists were double– and triple-booked to earn as much as possible and protect against last-minute cancellations. This does not happen at John Atchison. John Atchison has been one of the Kings of the Precision Cut for years, and I was expecting nothing but the best when I started going to his salon. I got it. First, the physical plant: spacious, well-appointed, spotless, and quiet; you can relax here. There may well be interpersonal drama, but it is certainly not on display — stylists and staff are courteous and professional to both customers and each other. Bookings are carefully timed: if you show up late, you are taken in a way that will not disrupt the schedules of those customers who arrived on time, which is as it should be. Best of all, they have two separate departments and rooms for chemical processes and styling. You see a trichologist(I go to Janice, who is excellent), who is an expert in hair health, for a relaxer or color and whatever associated treatments you may need, and then you are passed to your stylist(I see Jami’a, who is, again, excellent), for your trim/cut/style. Not only does this system mean that each department can concentrate and reach maximum skill level in their area of specialization(my hair has never been this healthy or grown this fast), but it’s more efficient. I get a relaxer and cut about five times a year. At a regular salon, I would be resigned to spending four to six hours to get both of these things done, because there’s one person responsible for all of it, and s/he’s also responsible for doing the same for the other five or six of his/her clients there at the same time I am. At John Atchison, the longest I have ever spent on this is three hours, and that is because I was 20 minutes late and was reshuffled accordingly. I’d been reading about this place in Essence for years, and I’m glad I finally decided to check it out when I decided to make a drastic hair change.

I recently wrote a terrible review for this salon because I was not happy with the hair cut I received when I asked for a trim. However, I’ve been taking biotin, MSM, Fish Oil and a Multivitamin and my hair is growing like a weed! About one inch in a month so far. The cut is growing out BEAUTIFULLY! I love it. I do need another trim because her flat iron re-split my ends, and my old cheap one didn’t help either, but I’m nourishing my hair for now and waiting for a bit more growth before I take the other half inch off. To re-cap my last review — I went to John Atchison’s for a Mizani Thermasmooth treatment, and to have my natural 3C/4A hair blown out. What a received was an edgy choppy short shag that took 3 – 4 inches of my hair. I was devastated. My stylist, AJ, did not discuss the hair cut with me prior to cutting my hair. She told me she’d take one inch and then took 3 – 4. If we would have discussed the hair cut prior to her cutting my hair I would not have been so upset. The cut itself was nice, but not my style due to the short choppy layers in the back. However, as I stated, it is growing out beautifully. :) With that being said, I will not return to that salon. I believe a stylist should ask your permission before cutting your hair in a style you did not ask for, not yell at you in the chair, tell you not to freak out, and ask that you trust them. I wasn’t a model getting my hair done for free. I was a paying customer.

This salon is highly professional and a quiet comfortable atmosphere. You are greeted by Natasha and she will either seat you in the waiting area or escort you to your stylist. I feel special the moment I enter the salon.
