JKDNYC is definitely one of the most welcoming gyms I’ve ever gone to. In just 5 classes I’ve been able to see and feel improvement thanks to the instructors and fellow classmates that are always there to mentor, assist, and train you so you’re at your full potential. Regardless of how much experience you have in any martial art(my friend and I are two girls who have only done really cardio kickboxing), I can guarantee that you can come here and not only learn the basics of moving, fighting and defending yourself but also hone in on combat skills and even weapons training. The great thing is that you’re always working with a partner so it’s not just a punching bag where it’s so easy to just fall into a pattern. Currently the studio is located on the fifth floor of a small building in Times Square where there aren’t any windows so you might feel it’s a little studio, but the friends you’ll make and the skills you learn make it all worth it!

I can’t stress enough how much I like this place. My friend and I have tried out a lot of different gyms, MMA or otherwise, and none have made me feel so welcome or so productive. Everyone is so NICE! People come up and introduce themselves to you and that has never happened at any other class I’ve taken. I can really feel the community vibe and it’s a great motivator. So my previous MMA«experience» has been every variety of kickboxing, where you just punch a bag or punch the air. JKD is very different– you practice on each other, which is after all, the best way to learn. For the first time I had to develop defense reflexes and block punches. We even learned some basics in weapon combat. I definitely developed some self defense tactics and had a lot of fun boxing with my fellow classmates. Be aware that the room has no windows and is quite smelly upon first entering, but you get used to it quickly and then its just you, your gloves, and a friendly bunch of enthusiastic opponents. Can’t wait to return!

My husband and I were impressed with Chris and his trainers. The first day we tried his class, we felt that we got a good workout and learned swift, useful martial art techniques within a short period of time. We enjoyed his class and look forward to going again very soon!

I met Chris through a friend of mine who is also a martial artist. I was looking for prospective trainers and this guy knocked my socks off. He was training with this brilliant young adult who was just amazing. I watched for a while and was very impressed with what I saw. I hope to get to training soon.

Yesterday was a great class! The newly added 630pm class makes it easier for me to come directly from work.

Chris Moran is the real deal. I got more out of a one hour private lesson with Chris than I did training one year at a previous martial arts school. He paid attention to detail and immediately identified the holes in my stand-up game. In one lesson, Chris completely reconstructed my jab, gave me some great footwork drills, and all while making it fun. I swear I left the gym bobbing and weaving. The best part of the service is how affordable it is! Chris offers great rates for private, semi-private, and group classes. If you’re serious about getting better at self-defense, or improving your martial arts skill as a whole, look no further. Been throwing that jab for days now! Thanks Chris
