WOMENBEWARE: the owner Jimmy is a sexual predator. He is physically inappropriate with his female customers, touching women before he has even introduced himself, isolating them from the rest of the bar, and giving a very, very creepy vibe that has not left me since I had an encounter with him and witnessed his actions with several other women. It distressed me to the point of wanting to leave, heart racing, and very angry. With alcohol in the mix, please be wary.

We heard about cider week and came here to give it a try. I made a reservation in early afternoon to ensure we will get some whole hog(special for cider week). Arrive and no one came by for 20 minutes. They told us to pick a seat. The menu on the table is very dirty. 20MINUTESWITHOUTANY service. Few waiter/waitress passed by and NO, NOONESERVEDUS, nothing. I don’t know what’s their problem, but it’s ridiculous rude, so we were pretty upset and left with empty stomach.

East Village hideaway. The bar is located on the lower level of a building and has a dark candlelight atmosphere. The patrons are very relaxed and somewhat all hipsters. The beer menu is very extensive but be careful because it can get rather pricey!

Never before have I been to a bar where the food, the beer selection, and the service was on par with each other. Jimmy’s No. 43 is hands down one of the best establishments in the East Village. Most bars in the city usually fall short of good food. Which is to be expected because who goes to a bar to have good food? Well, I had the Chicken Wings«Adobo», Pork Belly Tacos, and the Lechon Plate. All of them were amazing! I had to ask for another order of the Pork Belly Tacos because they were that good. I would have ordered more wings and another Lechon plate, but I was getting full and I wanted to leave room for more beer. As for the beer, this place has one of the most eclectic beer selections I have seen. I had a Brett Brett Double IPA by The Wild Beer Co. and a Midnight Showers Black IPA by Other Half Brewing. Both are awesome, because IPA, enough said. Also, this place doesn’t do those colorful fruity cocktails. They keep things the way it’s intended to be, unadulterated, simple and basic. Amen. Finally, the service was unlike a normal establishment in the city. Which is usually non existent. Everyone, without exception was a delight. Kind, accommodating, social, quick, and personable. The only thing I didn’t like was that we forgot to ask our waitress for her name. Who not only was pleasant to have around, but was also helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. Not to mention she gave us, on the house, a round of shots of her personal concoction of amaro and bourbon that was also pretty amazing. In summation, if you haven’t been to Jimmy’s No. 43 yet, cancel your plans tonight, and make this place your priority. Enjoy!

Divey, average atmosphere with above average beers. This place must’ve been a standout bar before the rest of NY jumped on the craft beer wagon. Now, the beers are slightly overpriced and the limited liquor options make it tough for friend groups with mixed drink preferences. That said, the back room is an awesome space to keep in mind for laid back bday parties or the like.

Was pleased to find this cozy subterranean spot with seats to spare on a Thursday night. Not that I don’t want them to have business… but it’s always nice to be able to hear your companion’s conversation. I had a cocktail, the Boulevardier I believe — bourbon-based, well-balanced, refreshing at a totally reasonable price point. The service was attentive as well. Apparently they have a small stage in the back that features Fringe productions that time of year. Will definitely be back!

Jimmy’s is a chill place to grab a couple of excellent beers and catch up with a few friends. It’s much more of a sit-down type bar than a standing/chilling at the bar type bar, which is just fine with me. It’s generally pretty quiet, since it has more of a restaurant atmosphere than rowdy bar atmosphere, so great if you want to have a conversation, but not the place to get super sloppy. The beer is generally an excellent selection, although I do find that they’re sometimes a little unbalanced. There will be times that they have 4 or 5 IPAs on the menu but nothing dark, or almost all Belgian styles, with nothing for the non-Belgian fans among us. On the one hand, the things on the menu are usually great, so it’s a safe place to branch out. But on the other hand, it’s tough looking at a beer list and not seeing a single option for your preferred style. Also, they’re a little on the pricey side(probably $ 8 or 9 is the average for a 8-oz. or 12-oz. pour). Like I said before, excellent quality, so you’re definitely getting something for your money, but not where you want to be downing beers left and right. I’ve never had the food so can’t comment on that, but I’m pretty sure that they rotate partnerships with some local vendors(think places you would see at Smorgasburg). Finally, they only accept cash or AmEx, so be prepared!

I don’t know Jimmy’s per se, but I DOKNOW that the last Wednesdays of the month they have a wonderful HOEDOWN, led by Megan Downes, who is talented enough to get even a Senior like me moving my feet and experiencing the ‘olden days’(fromMY experience)of a Square Dance! The City Stompers which Megan leads engage in ’flat footing’ and old time dancing from 9-l2PM and she makes you feel that you ought to do this at least once a month. Megan has a background as a professional dancer but is so relaxed and has such a good spirit, that I can only believe that Jimmy’s must be the perfect place to engage in this. Can’t wait to visit the next time I am in NYC!

Pros: — Attentive bartender and good service — Atmosphere — Architecture Cons: For a divey bar in a basement, prices are really overinflated. $ 11 for a glass of wine? I guess that’s Manhattan for ya. If the prices were lower, I would’ve bought two drinks and spent more money there. But whatever!

This bar is ok and the beer selection has some great choices, but at 11 – 12 bucks a beer it can get pricey. It is, to be fair, craft beer in Manhattan but I spent about 80 bucks on 6 beers including tip. I saw what seemed to be a band leaving, so perhaps there is more to the venue aspect but as a bar it’s pretty middle of the road.

Went here because the burp castle would serve us because they said they were close but Unilocal said they were open, it a small little bar that you have to walk down too. There nothing really special about it, and I’m not sure we will be back… but it’s good if there is no where else…

A favorite beer bar with a cozy basement bar. Great local beers, lovely bar service and just overall comfy & low key.

Jimmy Carbone is a fabulous host, the essence of gioia di vivere. Jimmy will make you happy. He hires awesome chefs, and their cooking/beer teach-ins are phenomenal — you get gourmet tastings and craft beer tastings… Atmosphere is wonderful — old barrels, cavelike interior. «Marlene Dietrich will appear at any moment.» Meat lovers and beer drinkers — this is your place!

To be honest, I probably walked by this bar multiple times in my lifetime without noticing it’s basement presence. It wasn’t until I bought the beer passport that I proactively went to seek this place out. Which means I came here only to drink. The bartender was extremely amicable and the tap selection was well rounded. The bartender allowed me to taste the beers before committing and I’m glad I did. She warned me about the more«interesting» ones after I divulged my tastes and that’s what I call good service to look out for her customers! I’m glad I stopped by.

Came here for a quick beer before a dinner in the area. I’ve heard this place has a good selection of craft beer, so I was interested in checking it out. It’s a cool little underground bar first off. Stairs going down are pretty steep, so I can see something bad happening if too dark or if you’ve had too many drinks. The beer I had was very good. The beer list was pretty extensive as well. I didn’t have a chance to try the food out so next time I come, I will be sure to update this review.

The food is amazing ! Thai /Philipino inspired cuisine. They now serve«hechon» style roasted pig on weekends now. Not sure if it’s Saturday or Sunday. Most succulent preparation of pig I’ve ever tried. Came here for a NY state single malt and whiskey tasting for the village voice. Jimmy the owner is a really cool and down to earth guy who knows what he’s doing when it comes to the right food and the right beer and spirits. Cozy euro style taverna feeling in this basement spot. Come here on a weekend and enjoy!

Jimmy’s will forever hold a special place in my heart, for it introduced me to my favorite beer – Allagash Tripel – the beer that I have based all subsequent beer decisions on. I am indebted to you, Jimmy’s. This place is a gem. I always go with the intention of trying out Burp Castle and McSorley’s afterwards… and I have yet to actually do so. Jimmy’s has a great vibe and I never feel compelled to leave. It’s a little beer wonderland, which is unexpected. The first time I came here, I assumed it would be darker/more divey – it is neither. Plenty of light, and just overall exudes warmth. I haven’t been out in England so this is all based on some cheery(and likely completely fabricated) illusion I’ve created in my head, but Jimmy’s seems like a jolly English pub that old mates would frequent to have some of the best ales in town. I can’t speak to the food here, but the beer is outstanding. This might’ve been just a right-place-right-time situation, but after my first visit to Jimmy’s, I was immediately turned onto the craft beer scene. Now I find that I’ve actually developed a taste in beer, which I didn’t think possible(this is coming from a diehard cocktail girl). Sadly, Jimmy’s didn’t have anything too similar to a Belgian tripel this time around, but trying a lighter beer for a change was nice(my liver probably thanks me too). The bartender let me try a few different kinds before I decided, which I always appreciate. If you’re in the East Village, this is definitely worth a visit if you’re a beer lover(or, even if you’re not, if you’re considering my experience). This is one of those lovely establishments that can temporarily make you forget that only a few walls separate you from the pandemonium that is New York City. On the weekends, this can be quite the relief.

You probably already know that Jimmy’s is an intimate basement bar with an amazing selection of beers, a positive vibe, cool events and a super friendly owner that knows quality beer and cider. I go to a lot of bars and Jimmy’s always feels like home. Luckily they survived the gas explosion next door and are open!
I’m giving this place 4 stars mostly for its reputation in the beer world. Apparently this place has been doing the craft beer thing for quite some time(aka like ten years, but hey, NYC was kinda late to the game). I respect that. It definitely feels like a dive, or something you’d find in England, dimly-lit with intimate tables and booths and a small bar populated by regulars and people lost in thought, their beer, or both. As a New Mexican, I come to New York every visit with the same goal: to take advantage of the awesome distribution and access that the city has to beer from around the world. It seems every brewery seeks to distribute to NYC and with that come not only a variety of beers, but also rarities, hard-to-get one-offs, and highly-rated gems. I expected to find such at the well-respected Jimmy’s, but the taplist was slightly underwhelming. Mikkeller’s Santa’s Little Helper 2014 was on tap and I opted for that, but mostly as a last resort, as nothing else on the list begged for a pour. I probably sound like a douche to some, or a whiney little bitch, and I probably am. But I also know what I want and what I’m looking for in a bar in NYC and anywhere else and Jimmy’s didn’t quite deliver. I suppose if I’d been willing to part with a lot of money, I might have found something on Jimmy’s list of bottled beers, but a quick peek told me all I need to know: one will get taken to the cleaners if they wish to crack a bottle here; the prices averaged about double(if not more) what the same bottle would cost in a store. And before someone writes a comment to me saying that’s to be expected in NYC, I say nope, that’s not true. Some places will hose you on bottles and some won’t. Though you’ll be sacrificing ambiance, Top Hops and Good Beer will get you some outstanding bottles at significantly less. Even Proletariat(which specializes in rarities and one-offs) seemed cheaper than here(plus they just had the better selection). In the end, pay this place a visit. It deserves that much. There are plenty of good beers on tap and in bottles that most beer drinkers will be happy with.
