Horrible haircut!! I asked to take off 1 inch.. the owner took off 3 inches. She didn't cut the way you requested. Not even a little bit! Unbalanced, especially on the sides. Instead cutting it to the curve of your head, she cut it straight. Also she was very fast. Very uncaring! They make you get your hair shampooed, even if you just washed it at home. Also the music is way too loud. Avoid this place!! !!

Just moved to the neighborhood and stopped in to have a full head of highlights done. A+ experience! I left a happy girl and will definitely be returning.

I walked into the salon in need of a hair cut. Marta was wonderful. I can be picky when it comes to my hair and honestly, I am hard to please. She did such an amazing job with long layers and cut at a reasonable price, I’ll be back. :)

I desperately needed my dark brunette roots done to match my platinum ‘do. I was looking all over the city for a great walk-​in place that could accommodate because my schedule is hectic it’s hard to keep an appointment recently. I was in Gramercy and looked on Unilocal!and saw great reviews for Hollywood Salon and that several people mentioned they are very accommodating to walk ins. So true! It’s a no frills place so don’t expect a matcha latte and neck rub, but my hair looks great, I got exactly what i wanted, and the root job plus a comb through to lighten my whole head another shade and THEN a trim… came to only $ 119. That’s a steal in Manhattan. I’ll definitely go back! Oh, and there’s an ATM in-​shop which is perfect for offering a tip in cash!

Best. Blowout. Ever. Thank you, Marta, for taking the time that so few stylists do to dry my long, dark, thick hair! She even got the baby hairs around my face. Absolute professional. I also got a trim, but I think I’m going to have to wait until I wash and dry my own hair to see how that panned out. Feeling good about it!

Amazing! I go to school in the nearby area and I needed my hair blown out ASAP. For $ 25, I got a high quality wash and blow out. Love the way my hair was styled too. Will definitely return

I’m honestly shocked about what a perfect haircut I got from Anastasia at SUCH a cheap price. I have super thick wavy hair that is pretty difficult to deal with, and have tried Ouidad, Bumble & Bumble downtown, and various salons in other cities and this is the first time someone has completely nailed exactly what I wanted out of a haircut.

Great no frills place for an affordable but professional haircut — hard to find in this city! Nadia listened to what I wanted, repeated it back to me to make sure, then explained what she did afterwards = happy customer. Note: they take credit cards but tips are cash only. I’ll be back!

After hearing from my mom what an amazing blowout she got here I decided to give it a go. I called for an appointment. When I showed up I only had to wait a few minutes. Martha was the one who took care of me. She asked my name and asked me EXACTLY how I wanted my haircut. Even down to the length. I asked for a trim with more layers and side swept bangs. At the end she blow dried my hair with some curls. I am in love with how my hair came out. I’ve never had a hair dresser as attentive to detail as Martha. The other two hair dressers seemed like they worked the same way. I will be doing my hair here from now on :)

I just recently moved to New York for the summer and needed a haircut desperately. I was starting an internship soon and needed to look my best. After an extensive search on Unilocal for a salon that was 1) clean 2) inexpensive and 3) well-​reviewed, I came upon Hollywood Salon and I’m glad I did!
I had read that they did walk-​ins and when I came to the salon I was greeted warmly and waited less than ten minutes before being ushered into a chair, even though the small salon was packed full of customers. There, I had my hair washed (with a very relaxing head massage, no less) by a younger stylist with an Eastern European accent (I didn’t catch her name through the whole process– apologies!). She did an amazing job cutting my hair as well– I brought in a picture of a simple bob and it turned out exactly the way I wanted it. She wasn’t very talkative, but neither am I so I felt very comfortable in her chair. I was in and out of the salon in about 45 minutes (including my initial wait). I also observed a girl getting highlights while I was waiting and was able to see the end result – really beautiful and subtle! Perhaps my next visit will be for coloring.
The major win came when I went to pay. $ 26 for a wash and cut (I had elected not to blow dry my hair since I was in a bit of a rush)!!! Maybe this was a special for a first time client but wow! I was prepared to pay twice that cost and have paid nearly 3 – 4 times that amount before at other, more upscale salons. I will definitely come here again. I would recommend Hollywood Salon if you’re looking for an inexpensive, no-​frills, no-​fuss quality haircut.

Pro: I was late for my appointment and the staff was very nice and accommodating. I also got a great blow out. I’d give that part of the experience 4 stars.
Con: The haircut. I have long hair with layers and was looking for a trim. I wound up with a trim and 2 layers — one short over one long. There is some variation in the length of the short layer but it a way that looks like a mistake. I will be going elsewhere to have this fixed. This part of the experience, sadly, gets 1 star.

Awesome haircut by Marta. Great shampoo by a wonderful lady (sorry, didn’t get her name) that lasted a solid 15 minutes… so relaxing! Amazing price for the service. Will be back.

This place isn’t super fancy or even spacious, but it is amazing! After living in NYC for a year and a half, I finally broke down and made a hair appointment here in the city. Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t allowing my hair to grow wild. I had the good fortune of traveling regularly for work with one of my frequent destinations being the city where I used to reside and where my long-​time hair stylist was. With work travel decreasing, my tresses were long overdue for some TLC. After reading numerous reviews on Unilocal,I mustered up the courage to call Hollywood Salon on a weekend. I was happily surprised that they scheduled me for an afternoon appointment that day.
As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by name by my stylist. This friendliness set the tone for the appointment. As I patiently waited (the wait is a bit long, but well worth it), I noted how pleased other clients were with these wonderful hair stylists. Many of these clients seemed to be regulars as the employees knew them by name. It felt so warm and inviting here.
When it was finally my turn to sit in the chair, my stylist picked up on how nervous I was (note: my tresses had been faithful to my long-​time hair stylist for roughly 8 years). She calmed my nerves and communicated with me about everything she was doing with my hair. I am so incredibly happy with the end result. I highly recommend this top-​quality, affordable salon.

The service is fantastic at Hollywood — very hospitable, friendly staff. I had Marta who was exceptional. She went beyond my expectations and was so patient and professional in what I wanted with my haircut. Told me to come back anytime if I wasn’t happy with the length. Overall great hair dresser and very affordable compared to other places in Manhattan. Thumbs up!

OMFG guys, I found my forever hair lady! Marta is WONDERFUL! She knew and executed exactly what I wanted, and getting my roots done, getting a half head of highlights, getting a cut and a blowout? $ 150 How are you going to beat that while being ecstatic with the results?
This place appears to be your typical run of the mill Russian lady salon. When I went there were two «older» (sorry) Russian women who seemed to have older clients with your typical older lady hairdos. The two younger blonde women (one being Marta) seemed to have the younger clients.
Cool thing? Rachel Dratch sat right next to me and got her hair did. You think I couldn’t recognize you, Rachel? In your frumpy clothes and sandals? ha! Sorry, but I adore her — of course it would be very un-​New York of me to say anything so I just caught a glimpse or two before she left.
Anyway, I’m forever yours Marta — see you in a few months! :)

This place is good to know about. They do seem to have a lot of five star reviews here but several are notably from members with only a single Unilocal review. I came for a simple scissor trim and blowdry. they confirmed $ 35 on the phone.
They did the trim as I asked and the trim was fine and the blowout was fine. I’m happy overall. But Im giving fewer stars becausethey raised the price from the time I called to the time of my cut the same day adding an extra $ 10 without an explanation.
bottom line: $ 46 is a fine price for the cut I got — but prices shouldnt change mid-​cut.

This is a story about ombré.
One Friday back in late September, I wanted to get it done, in the style of Rashida Jones (
) or Alexa Chung (
).
I didn’t care that I was about a year and a half late to this strange trend of paying well over a hundred bucks at a salon to simulate a look that happens if you bleach your hair, surf all summer, and then let your roots grow out past the point of looking like you just need to redo your roots.
And I wanted to get it done that day.
There were so many obstacles to achieving this goal, chiefly:
(a) The fact that I still had very short hair with already damaged tips.
(b) I am an Asian American with black hair, which loves to turn brassy in response to any coloring chemicals.
© This is New York City, where you can rarely find a walk-​in or same day appointment at any salon worth its salt.
(d) The window of time that I was able to visit a salon was pretty small; 3 hours between the time that I got out of work and the time that I would drive up to New England with my boyfriend for the weekend.
I already knew what I was dealing with, but when I called another salon that I value for their unmatched hair cutting precision, they interrogated me for about twenty minutes while I cringed, whispering, at my work desk, then told me that a pre-​interview appointment was required, after which maybe they’d be able to approve my hair for the process, which would likely be a multiple procedure (with cumulative costs) in order to do it right.
This might be the way to go for celebrities, but for little old me, sometimes you just want to say fuckit, just do it, and who cares about the damage because hair grows!
Of course, I also didn’t want to blindly walk in somewhere and get my hair botched up when I could do that for a fifteenth of the price out of a box from the nearest Duane Reade.
After much angsting and little to go on other than solid Unilocal reviews and the website (
), I called up Hollywood Salon and made an appointment with the man who answered.
Thanks to the far eastern 2^nd Avenue location, I was a bit late and had to wait much, much longer to get shampooed then seated, but I figured this was my fault.
The stylist seemed uncertain about the process (or about my hair in general), but I fought against my hair trigger reaction to run for the hills and let her paint the elixir on my tips and wrap them in foil. I looked like Medusa, and felt like Medusa when they put me under one of those heated drying helmets. At one point I felt like my brain was literally cooking, so they gave me a break, but then shoved me back under there for what felt like forever, saying that heat was a necessary part of activating the chemicals. Knowing this was true, I endured.
The worst part was when the stylist unwrapped one foil packet and showed my hair to another stylist. They seemed worried and spoke in another language for a while. Eyes darting, I shrieked, «What’s wrong??» and they were like «No, no, nothing.»
I started feeling sick, then angry, then stupid, then sad, then stupid, then angry…
But the end of this story is that when my hair was unwrapped, rinsed, then blown out and I dared to open my eyes… I was met with perfection. I got lucky with this one, folks, so let me spare everyone the gamble and say that if you want to try ombré (especially not coward’s ombré, which is too subtle to even show), then this is a suitable place to do it in one shot on the day that you decide to do it… even if you have black roots and chlorine fried tips… for $ 130 and change.
Thanks, Hollywood! After a few months and a lot of growing out, I still feel like a million bucks!
