Hoagie’s Heros

I hate to give this place only three stars. The food is definitely 5 stars. But (and I hope the owner reads this) the man who served me today needs to learn some «customer service» skills.
I clearly ordered the chicken/​avocado salad (said avocado more than once), which I’ve had many times. It usually costs something like $ 8.50. Before he started he said «$ 9.50». No big deal… prices can go up. So, as he’s mixing it, I said «You forgot the avocado.» He say’s «That’s $ 1 more.» I said that he quoted $ 9.50 and 2 weeks ago I paid $ 8.50 and then his response was something about a sandwich (but he had the salad that he just made in front of him. I didn’t argue… not worth the energy). So the cashier tells me «$ 11». At my request she asked him «why» and he said something about «extra toppings». I actually didn’t even have that many toppings and I didn’t have dressing so if anything I should have had a discount.
The food is really good, but if (there are lots of other delis in the neighborhood) I go back I won’t let this man serve me. He’s going to cost business unless his skills improve.

DELICIOUS chicken sandwich with melted fresh mozzarella cheese, roasted red peppers, tomato and lettuce. Walked in and didn’t know what to order so the man behind the counter suggested that sandwich. It definitely exceeded expectations and I look forward to going back for future sandwich needs.

Nice, clean, neighborhood deli with great prices and lovely service. They are generous with meat and toppings on their subs!

The Italian lives up to the hype. Personal preference would be a little lighter on the mayo, but it’s still a really good sandwich.

Since my phone messed up I couldn’t check in until later. The nice girl behind the counter gave me the 20% off anyway.
Today they had the Croquet Monsieur with my choice of bread. I had it on rye bread. It was ham, Gruyère cheese and chopped up pickles. Very good thick ham and delicious cheese. With my discount it came to $ 4.25. Just what I needed during this busy week!
Everyone is very nice in Hoagies Hero’s. I do tend to miss it walking by because the awning still says Third Avenue Deli. I’m glad they have the sidewalk board out front or I would walk right by.
If your working in the neighborhood and want a decent filling sandwich this is a great place to shop.

Drastic change, I know. Still have not eaten here, but I trust my fellow Unilocalers with their reviews. One thing I greatly respect is when someone is willing to reach out and try to right something. Michael, the owner, reached out to me and we are in communication for our future event. Great establishment, clean, friendly staff and convenient for people in the neighborhood. I really recommend their Italian sub, very tasty and made with top quality meats. They also serve breakfast all day! Highly recommended.

One of the best sub shops in NYC! Hard to find a good «sub» in the city and Mike has it spot on! Simple, fresh ingredients, fresh bread, and great ownership. Mike even hand delivered one night. I have gone back multiple times and will continue to go/​order.

When you think of a delicious Italian sandwich, this is the one you want. We made the walk over to HH after an afternoon at the Met and I’m so glad we did! 100% delicious, plus friendly, awesome staff! I loved this place and will definitely stop in again the next time I’m in nyc. Heads up, there is no seating here, but we ducked in next door and grabbed a bottle of wine from Wine Castle and took our delish sandwiches back to our hotel to devour. Give it a shot!

Best sandwiches in the neighborhood. I usually go here for lunch, they make their subs with really high-​quality bread and meats, and they’re fast, cheap and friendly. So I got them to make a 6-​foot Italian sub for Sunday football, it was half the price of anyplace else and a huge hit at the party. Would highly recommend.

I guess I got my hopes up when I saw the Italian Hero picture in a previous Unilocal review. When I got home, I was surprised to see how little meat there was in my sub.
I got the Italian Hero, which had Ham, Salami, pepperoni, lettuce tomato and mayo. If it contained more meat, it definitely would have been worth my while. Their bread wasn’t the most fantastic bread I’ve ever had. It was ok… a little on the tough side… almost like a baguette but not.
The guys at Deli on 3^rd Ave. are very very friendly! Very respectful and kind… definitely thumbs up on that!
FYI, they will NOT deliver past 2 avenues. I called them originally to get delivery because I was not feeling well to get out of bed… and they said they wouldnt deliver, even though I live super close. I had to peel my sick self up out of bed for my strong italian hero sub craving.

Amazing italian hero. Haven’t bothered to order anything else but that here, since it’s that good. Roughly $ 8-​$ 9, but worth every penny. Great customer service, I can call ahead and it’ll be ready 15 min later when I get there.

Been a regular for ages! They used to be across the street from us, and it was a huge disappointment to loose them to 3^rd ave. They had been a part of my daily routine since 5^th grade. They used to be a few doors down from pioneer. Their bagels, double chocolate chip muffin, meatball heros, are my go-​to top 3. I’m a creature of habit, and i just love the neighborhood loyalty between them and the rest of us who’ve been loyal patrons.

I’m so happy that i found a good sandwich spot a block away from my apartment. I ordered the Italian hero, which i gotta say is a pretty weird combo there. It includes ham cappy, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomato, hot peppers, mayo, oil, and vinegar, but they also include ham, which i’m not complaining about, it’s just odd. I really enjoyed the sandwich, mostly because they use boars head products. The bread wasn’t anything to rave about but wasn’t bad. I thought the hot peppers were a nice touch and really brought the heat. The sandwich was definitely filling and i believe it was $ 7.50, not a bad deal.

Brand spanking new deli /​bodega that popped up in my hood a few months back. Bright and clean. Food is fresh. The now also make burgers. Not the best, but decent enough when you crave a late night snack. Open late until 1 AM. Good spot to grab a breakfast wrap too, especially when there is a long line at Effy’s close by and you don’t want to wait long.
A bit on the pricey side for certain items, but a good selection of stuff in here. Still, a nice alternative to the sketchy bodegas that populate the area. You do pay extra for the privilege of living in NYC!

Did you know they serve burgers here now? With a recent recommendation from Al, this place started to make burgers and I had a chance to try it past weekend. Cheese burger it was, tasty and simple. The fact that being in the area, there is no fast food around. This is a quick and easy. If you come by here next time, ask for a burger and enjoy yourself. It was not the best burger but when you are craving such, they have it here and fill your tummy.

As good as it gets for a deli! The place looks v. clean, food always fresh, this is now my go to breakfast place (almost feel like I’m cheating on Effy’s!) — the best breakfast wraps, hands down. And I get coldcuts here too as well as late night dinner (burgers!) They are conveniently open till 1am. Also, I do not mind waiting a bit for them to make my food, it’s an open air kitchenette, and it’s nice to know that real food is being prepared (which is why it’s not instant). This is the UES version of my beloved «corner store» from Brooklyn — but cleaner and mucher better food!
