Authentic although the receptionist couldn’t spell my German surname. Waiters in lederhosen and all the beers that you find in Germany. The sausages had that satisfying juiciness and the pork knuckle knocked it out of the park. Portions are big and hearty German style. Sadly we didn’t have room for the strudel but it looked as satisfying as the other dishes we ordered. The sauerkraut is very authentic too, cucumber salad was freshly made with a right balance of sour cream and vinegar

One of my favorite German restaurants in the city! Food is great! It is true homemade German food. You get the feeling that you are at your grandmothers as the owner is an older woman in the kitchen making the dishes. I always get the Sauerbraten which is delicious. It is dark lighting vibe and typically not an overcrowded place as I’ve never had to wait for a table. Not very loud even with the bar right near the tables. Have been here for brunch too. I got the apple pancakes which is a much denser cake. I feel it is more of a laid back dinner place.

Went with a big group of about 10 people and everyone loved their meal. The staff was very friendly and patient with our crowd.

Great beer and sausages. Good service as well. I can’t profess to know much about German food but the sausage platter/sauerkraut was quite good. This review is based on my first and only visit. Charming place that’s worth a visit.

I’ve never been to Germany, but I assume it would be something like this. Such an authentic feeling with German waiters an steins of bees. The sasuage and spetzel were unbelievable and something I can’t wait to get again!

I’ve gotten to try a bunch of different food items here, and they’ve ranged from good(shnitzels, brats, cucumber salad) to very good(potato pancakes). I’ve never been truly blown away by anything, but it’s always solid, and I always enjoy it. The downsides are that it’s expensive for what it is, and while I typically don’t really put much weight on the service, the service here tends to be very, very slow. I’m not a beer drinker, so it’s possible that a large part of the value here is being lost on me. Overall, it’s a good option if you’re looking for German food on the Upper East Side, but I wouldn’t feel the need to go out of my way for it.

I’m not German so I can’t judge on the authenticity. but inside is extremely cute, I love the wood and metal rustic decors. schweinehaxe was good. I love the sauerkraut is not too sour and has cumin in it.

Some of my observations are dated, because Heidelberg has updated their menu.(There are no longer sides and meat sides, sadly.) I went with friends for a wienerschnitzel, and it is better than ever. I hate to even say it because it’s hard to get in now, but Heidelberg is a place that I’d like to keep around, so I guess I am duty-bound to spread the word.

Not many restaurants have schweineshaxe on their menu in the city but Heidelburg does! Schweineshaxe here was so excellent and delicious. Crispy on the outside and the meat was perfectly cooked. Loved it!

Came here for a guys night out with my college buddies. We were 6 people, I thought getting a table on a Friday night would be difficult but everything worked out alright. Their German beer selection is extensive and the mugs come in different sizes. I started with a half liter of beer and a hot soft pretzel at the bar. It was a perfect match. We then sat down for dinner. Our waiter recommended several appetizers for our table. They were are very good. Basically tried all of their hot apps. My favorite were the potato pancakes. Very crispy. Then for my entrée I had the Pork Shank. It was the star of the night. It had a succulent crispy skin that had a snap to it when I took the first bite. It was so moist and smokey. I loved it. My final course was their Black Forest cake. It was not so good. It was br what I expected. Overall I would definitely come back here again. Service was good too.

I have to say that I’ve noticed the complaints that the potato salad is served cold… frankly, I grew up on cold Kartoffelsalat and this was as close to my mother’s recipe as I’ve had in ages… I loved it.

Two words. Pork Shank. This place is my FAVORITE German cuisine in all of NYC. It just edges out Zum Stamtisch in Glendale Queens. The table service can be a bit«hit and miss» but great food, drink and company should keep you occupied. If your party is 4 or more I recommend starting with the sausage platter. Yum yum. They also serve beer in .5, 1L, and a «boot».

We ate here after going to the museum. Great place to get a German beer in a boot glass. German food is not the best cuisine but they make it really good. We ate in the back. Big group and it was handled very well.

Well the first time I went here last year the food was very good and I would have given this place 4 – 5 stars but I went back two days ago and I was highly disappointed! First of all, I am 100% German, born and raised in Germany, lived there till I was 22. So I grew up on German food. This time around I hated the Jaegerschnitzel! It was soaked in sauce which would have been not to bad if it was thick dark mushroom sauce and not a light soupy sauce, so not Jaegerschnitzel. The potatoes pancakes were delicious though. The Knoedel or dumplings were dry and the gravy did not taste it was freshly made but rather came from the box And for a Schweinehaxe to b $ 38 and the Jaegerschnitzel to b $ 28 I def expected it to be as good as the first time Maybe I came on the wrong day w the wrong cook! :(

Heidelberg is great. When game of thrones season starts I will probably go there and order something that looks appropriately game of thronsey. The food is consistent and excellent, the service is helpful and the restaurant is just plain fun. It is, however, ontologically impossible not to over eat. When you walk in you already have over eaten. Plan accordingly. If you are going you should avoid eating for 1 – 3 days and also bring a pamphlet for bariatric surgery.

Every neighborhood needs a great german beer and sausage restaurant, and this is Yorkville’s. The décor is definitely cozy, with lots of dark wood and noisy, cheerful bustle. The service is pretty good and friendly. Watch out, it gets packed on the weekends — come early! There’s a large selection of excellent german beers on tap and bottled(with boots and large glasses of all shapes). The food itself is really good. We had the 2-person sausage sampler and it was a lot of food for two people, and a great selection of sausage that is definitely made better with copious beer… Yeah, we’re coming back. We’ll try during the day on a weekend to see if it’s less crowded(but nothing beats sausages and beer in the fall; or on cold winter days…)

I was here for brunch yesterday. I came with a group, and we were well accommodated. We ordered a number of appetizers — fruit salad, cucumber salad, and potato pancakes with applesauce. I ordered spaetzle with bacon for my extree. Overall I would say that I enjoyed all the food, and the service was pretty good. I did have to really flag down the wait staff to get water refills, but the wait staff was friendly. The food is absolutely traditional German. If that is what you want, that is what you get at a place like this. I look at the restaurant as from a bygone era. It was built at a time when«Yorkville» was basically all German, and is a holdover from the past. The wait staff wear dirndl uniforms that are adorable. Anyway, bottom line is that I used to live almost next door to this restaurant but never went, because dinner is somewhat expensive. But if you want to try out the place, I recommend brunch. The menu is more affordable, and offers some of the German classics for you to try. I found the food to really be 3 ½* quality, but I am giving this 4 stars for the ambiance and originality of the restaurant.

Now I’m just rating this place off the beer and also felt like I was on the set of Inglorious bastards when they are at the bar and drinking with the Germans. This place was recommended to me by a colleague. He specifically told me the inside has a real Germany feel to it when he visited. The staff is even dressed down to their shorts, suspenders and hats and the place has beautiful Beer Steins and Das Boots all around the place. We came in here to just grab one drink and we ended up with 3 lol. The best part is the gent at the door told us if we came in here to just drink we can sit down at the tables right around the bar and noone would bother us. This place is really cool and I recommend it to anyone who just want to sit down and feel like you’re on a set of Inglorious bastards.

This place wasn’t really my scene, but I can see the appeal. The inside is very richly decorated and really takes you to an older world filled with German culture. They had an impressive selection of beers. Someone ordered one for me(can’t remember the name) and it had strong notes of pumpkin and other spices-delicious but got to be too sweet towards the end. I came here on a Saturday night around midnight and it wasn’t super lively. Very down to earth and casual environment though. This is definitely a better place for eating than for drinking. However, I did really like that it was really easy to have a conversation here-it’s good for chilling at the bar but not so good for turning up. Overall I think this place is very good for what it does but personally it’s not really the type of spot I would frequent.

I can’t believe I’ve lived virtually up the block from Heidelberg for all this time, and I just finally got to dine here recently. My friends invited me for an early Sunday dinner here since they love it, and I must say I was also quite impressed. Heidelberg is a stalwart of old Yorkville and its heyday as New York’s Germantown, and it’s a pleasant and fun little piece of history to try out. Presenting a traditional German menu of items like wursts, schnitzel and other rich fare, it’s definitely«warm you up» food. They also have a great selection of German beer on draft, and you can even have it in a giant glass boot if the mood strikes. My friends and I tried a few things and the standouts to me were the potato pancakes, käse spätzle(basically mac and cheese — so good) and I had the jägerschnitzel(veal cutlets served in mushroom gravy) which is hearty and filling and the portion is kinda mind-boggling(definitely shareable). The restaurant itself looks like an old Bavarian beer hall with lots of rustic décor, and the wait staff all wear traditional old German garb to play into that. When we were there on a Sunday afternoon, it was mostly full of local old people(which I of course love and I would say is probably a testament to its quality). Service is fast and reasonably friendly(Germans, you know), and the prices seem high until you realize the portions are mega-sized so you’ll definitely be able to share to take home. Overall, a recommended spot and a fun jaunt down Yorkville’s memory lane.

OMG. I just tried the oven roasted pork shank at Heidelberg“s German restaurant in the upper east side with my buddy Sal and I am still stuffed from last nights meal. I ate with my buddy Sal and he was in Heaven as well he went with the beer boot and German hot dogs and is still drunk at 7:30 am. NICE. My pork shank was one of the best German meals I ever had. The pork was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. It came with German potatoes and kraut. The waiter was right on the money with this recommendation. Can’t wait to check this place out again

Typisch Deutsch! Ein echter deutscher Biergarten mitten in New York, Manhatten.
