Sometimes there is nothing better than going to a show with no expectations or even low expectations. I wanted to be surprised so I didn’t look anything up about this play ahead of time. Nothing matches the magic of seeing a great play unfold in front of you. I am so glad I didn’t know much of the plot because if I did, it would have ruined it for me. I do not want to say much about the plot so as to not spoil this play for anyone reading this review. The only thing I am going to say about the plot is, as the title says, the play is about two imperial guards at the Taj Mahal during the reign of The Emperor Shah Jahan of India in 1648. This play which started as a comedy turned pretty dark. This play is pretty intense and quite riveting. At moments I felt like I didn’t blink for a while. I must have been concentrating so hard to try to hear everything because I didn’t want to miss a word. My jaw dropped. I didn’t know the twist that came up in the play. There were only two actors in this play. Both actors were astonishing. This play touches on themes of friendship, loyalty, differences between people with and without power, definitions of what beauty is, self-preservation and the sense of duty. There are scenes in this play that actually perturbed me a bit but I can handle disturbing things though. This play is extremely powerful. At the end of the play, I was clapping so hard I hurt my hand. My boyfriend and I looked at each other at the end of the play and were wondering: is that a real story!!! The play has been extended to July 12, 2015. I would highly recommend this play to anyone who is not afraid of a little gloom. Sometimes in order to drive home a point, you gotta be really dramatic. If you are into happy musicals, this is far from a happy musical, very very far!
