The old asian woman that works as a cashier at Essex Farm is a dirty animal. When I requested that my change be tendered in singles after receiving a five dollar bill, she answered«no» with a grunt more for prison than retail. She constantly scowls at customers. It’s time for her to leave America or die.

Awesome selection of fresh herbs. And at normal prices. I buy almost all my fruits and vegetables here. LIke Viva, another great place for latino products. Skip Whole Foods and Union Market next time and check these guys out. Yeah, crazy how fast those cashiers are!

This is the northernmost grocery/greengrocer in the Essex Street Market. It’s the most upscale of the bunch. What really sets this place apart is the staggering variety of products they carry, all at fair prices. Fresh herbs? They have a wide variety. Same with fruits and veg. Mexican specialty products? They got them. Porcini mushrooms? Check. Whole wheatberries? Oh yeah. More bottles and jars of condiments and sauces than you could shake a stick at? Absolutely. All kind of nuts? They got them, too. The more you look around the more you find. The lines at the cash register get long sometimes, but they manage the trick of being both friendly and efficient, seeing to it the lines move quickly. During the day you’ll spot local restaurant kitchen staff here stocking up on last minute produce needs. If all you’re after is some limes, peppers, papaya or avocados their competition to the south of the market could save you a little dough. Essex Farm really shines when you’re looking for something that’s a little hard to find. Again and again they’ve surprised me by having exactly what I was looking for when I was about to give up hope. It’s a good little grocery, and very good to have in the neighborhood.
