This past Sunday was the last day for East Village Farm; according to news reports they’re moving to 48th street. First operated by Roxy, then by Loew’s, this building was the Hollywood theater from the 1920s to the 1950s. The Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation is trying to forestall what would be yet another tragic loss for the neighborhood.

This is a really great grocery store. They are a bit more expensive than KeyFood, for example, but the quality of their foods is so much better! Vegetables in particular are much nicer than elsewhere: always fresh and well taken care of. This is the only place where we’ll buy spinach, peppers, zucchini(other than the farmers market, but other stores seriously can’t compare). All in all, a pretty wide assortment of foods(including organic), and vegetables in particular are worth the higher price. Credit cards accepted over $ 10.

i’ve been to many deli’s and mini groceries in the East Village… this is by far the most airy, clean, organized… with vast selections of everything. i was amazed by all the different varieties of gelato(i bought«Ciao Bello») and ice cream, Asian spice/seasoning mixes, pastries, flat breads(southwestern– with jalepeno and onions? mmm mmm!), ramen, yogurt, vegan-friendly fav.‘s, biscotti, Gatorade, Terra chips, and even international chocolate/candies! i mean… they have a whole aisle dedicated to a certain food or something– it’s amazing! i was snaking through the aisles with a huge grin of satisfaction on my face. the gelato i bought is absolutely heavenly. i’ve never seen it in other markets… but their variations in flavors intrigued me– so i selected the Strawberry Chardonnay flavor. it’s pure ecstasy. the owner/cashier of the grocery was very kind and made me smile even bigger. he spoke to me in Korean, «yeh pun ah-ga-shi…»(which means: pretty miss!) and i giggled. then he was surprised that i spoke Korean as well. it was a funny moment.
