I took my current girlfriend out here for our first date on Valentine’s Day. Granted it was a year ago at this point, but I still remember the night. The atmosphere was one that was buzzing but we definitely had a secluded feel at our table, which allowed for a pretty pleasant conversational environment. I came to the restaurant expecting some savory food and that’s exactly what my date and I received. I ordered gnocchi as an appetizer while my girlfriend ordered a salad. The wine selection was quite extensive and the waiter was very helpful in helping us make a decision to best suite the main courses we ordered, which were a duck dish and a lamb dish. When dessert time came around, I made the terrible decision of ordering a cookie plate, which was good, but paled in comparison to the apple and ice cream crêpe my girlfriend ordered. On a whole the night was a great experience and I would definitely recommend Django for a special night.

Django is dressed in the spirit of gypsy guitar hero, Django Reinhardt. The space is immense and filled with distressed leather and velvet, and feels like a prohibition era hangout or a brasserie in prewar france. My girlfriend and I had Django’s tasting menu. Seven courses paired with wine and port. And we tossed back a few whiskies poured over blocks of shaved ice. I really enjoyed Django, and strangely, there I was eating a fois grois and sipping a small batch bourbon, but it was the mashed potatoes that I remember. They are obscene. It’s as if they had been whipped for nine hours then seasoned with a baby’s tears. Try them, you’ll see.

One of our clients took us out here and I have to admit that the space is beautiful. It’s large and expansive and the service is also excellent. I think this would be a great place to come for a large birthday dinner; although take note that the clientele is a bit older/sohphisticated. In terms of the food, the portions are small. I had the mussels and thought they were delicious, but for some reason, weren’t really memorable. Mussels are good no matter what, and they did a good job with them but they weren’t excellent… I’d like to go back, but not sure if this is somewhere I’d visit if it’s on me – just don’t think you can get your bang for the buck. I’m curious to try their quail however!

So I came here for restaurant week for dinner. Great service and pretty nice interior. Even the food was delightful and well-prepared. Unfortunately, I came hungry and left hungry. It takes the European theme to the extreme by having the waiters/bus boys serve a small piece of bread individually and serve very very small portions of each dish. I had the risotto, which they served on an enormous plate the size of a beach ball. I guess they wanted to emphasize how little food they were giving you. The food was great and I would love to eat there, but normal cost is about 30 – 35 dollars for a dish. Thus, if you work on Wall-Street or a major NY law firm and want to eat a snack, this is a great place. Otherwise, I’d recommend making this a rare restaurant week/expensive date ocassion only.

The food was pretty good and the service was nice, though very young and inexperienced. The décor is nice, though the booth seats were falling apart and so weren’t very nice.

I came here during restaurant week for lunch. I really like the décor and ambiance. It’s alive, but you can still hear your own thoughts and your pals talking. I must say that the wait staff was extremely polite and attentive. I really can’t complain about the service at all. I had the risotto, which had a weird aftertaste, and was reminiscent of macaroni & cheese. It was very heavy. I started to feel full after about 4 spoonfuls, and I was starving before those 4 spoonfuls. I also had the roast chicken stuffed with goat cheese. The chicken was extremely moist and tender. It was really quite sumptuous. Perhaps the best chicken I’ve ever had! Dessert was the most disappointing. I ordered the angel cake with strawberries. The angel cake was a tiny little triangular slice, that happened to look like bread, but was far more chewy and tough. It almost seemed stale. However, there was this very nice sauce, the name of which escapes me right now, that contrasted ever so beautifully with the strawberries, and together with the angel cake, was just a very pleasant experience in my mouth, except that the cake was sooo tough to chew.

I can’t say whether I’d enjoy my meal if I had paid, because me spending good money to eat in a swanky Midtown business-lunch type place would simply never happen. But I was treated to lunch on a corporate credit card. That’s right friends, I am living the summer associate dream! I am slowly learning that just because lunch is on the firm, it doesn’t mean I have to order three courses. I restrained myself this time and had the chicken paillard salad, which was big and quite delicious. The chicken is nicely seasoned and grilled, topped with greens and sprinkled with currants and toasted almonds and crunchy papadum fragments(papadum being the thin wafers with seeds that come with Indian food). The décor — green & purple paisley wallpaper, dangling chandaliers — felt a little overdramatic for lunch time. But the downstairs lounge looked like it could be kinda sexy for evening drinks, if you like sticking around midtown after work, which I emphatically do not.

My dad and his friend took me here last night(we were at a Golf event across the street, so it was v convenient) and I was happy with our choice! The ambiance and décor were lovely! Mediterranean chic maybe? The service was also great, as was the presentation. Since my dad and his friend are mainly diner guys, we didn’t go all out with the menu — I had the skate, dad’s friend had the duck and my dad had a dish that came w/pumpkin crepes — all yummy! The polenta that came w/the duck and the pumpkin were SO creamy and delicious! The skate was also good, but the menu said it came w/couscous and it actually came w/rice. But never mind — everything was flavorful and delicious. I’m glad I got here, and I’m hoping to go back to try the Tanjine(my other choice) and maybe an appeteaser or two, but I was v satisfied.

I just wrote a review, but somehow when i submitted, it went blank. So I’ll write a shorter version. I have some pics so check it out. Pro: 1. Good ambiance with a romantic mediterrean feel. 2. Food was fresh with nice presentation(see PHOTOS) 3. Good service. Cons: 1. Expectedly expensive

Came here with the girls for restaurant week. Beautiful at first glance, but closer inspection clearly separates it from true 5, or even 4-star status. Exhibit A: white tablecloths often denote elegance, but I happened to be seated at the metal legs of the table, thus realizing that we were eating at your average, subpar conference table. 4 of my co-diners ordered the Restaurant Week special: — Bris Bris lettuce salad. solid portion, but looked a bit simple. everyone agreed it needed lemon, or a little something more. — Eggplant soup. to quote, «it doesn’t taste like eggplant. more like tabasco and tomatoes.» — everyone opted for the pork loin. presentation was nice, although some plates obviously had more sauce than others. the pork arrived pre-sliced, and extra au jus was requested to combat the dryness. — panna cotta desert. beautiful presentation and finally a dish where the flavors were perfect. not a single criticism uttered. — the chocolate cake with milk foam. many oohs and aahs over this one! it take a lot for my hardened lactose intolerant mindset to salivate over dairy, but salivate i did! The non-RW items: — tuna tartar app. surprisingly well portioned, and excellent array of subtle flavors that complemented the tuna well. — roasted scallops. well, i guess TWO scallops allows the dish to be referred to in the plural. the flavors were right on though. dots of a balsamic reduction provided functional beauty to the plate, and the bed of leek purée and cauliflower foam was incredible. it was delightful, and that last generous mouthful… was prematurely whisked away with my fork in hand, and mouth opening in anticipation. so wrong. — duck. VERY generous portion, was quite surprised. enough to share even, although not tasty enough to polish the plate. it rested on a bed of greens, pretty straightforward dish. — bouillabaisse. almost knocked this review down to 2 stars! rimmed with a dozen mussels, or should i say, 10 mussels and 2 empty shells. wasted effort to plate empty shells, IMO. again, an instance where size matters: the shrimps, clams, and 3 or 4 tidbits of lobster were all baby-sized. the ingredients lacked quality in an obvious way. the broth was thin, just a step above salted water. all in all, service was good, although a little TOO speedy in clearing my app. food arrived very promptly. they seated our incomplete party on time. my dirty martini was perfectly made, and the gals gushed over their rose flavored martinis. the dishes all seemed to need a little something, but the desserts are definitely this establishment’s forte. in NYC, there are so many other other fine dining establishments to try before returning here. big points off for offering almost exclusively dairy-laden choices on RW and dessert menu.

Yay restaurant week! I really LOVED this place. The RW menu was really good and gave us a good taste of what Django has to offer. The atmosphere is awesome, kind of a gypsy/genie theme… dark, romantic, comfortable, etc. The service was fast and our waiter was knowledgeable. The«Superfox» martini(advertised as only fresh kiwi purée and greygoose) was delicious but clearly made less alcoholic with the secret ingredient of sour mix. The lounge area is really nice and almost… regal looking… and I heard through the grapevine that its BYOB! I will probably return to use my $ 25 «thank you for participating in restaurant week» gift card, but in the end it is a bit pricey for my liking.

I work and live right around the area but for some reason have never even seen this place. I came for dinner at the recommendation of a coworker for Restaurant Week. The restaurant’s downstairs is a huge bar filled with squashy sofas and well-heeled banker types. The hostesses were friendly, though there was some confusion with getting us seated. Our party was late, but we got no attitude for it. The dining room is upstairs, and woo-wee, is it gaudy! The RW menu was a tad disappointing: I ordered the eggplant soup, poached salmon, and tangerine panna cotta. The soup was fairly yucko, the salmon wasn’t bad for«poached Atlantic salmon», and the panna cotta was yummy but meager. The bread, however, is warm and crusty and delightfully delish. Our waiter was super eager and kept us amused the whole evening. We sat at our table for a good 3+ hours, and were never pressured to finish up or leave. Before leaving, our waiter gave each of us a $ 25 gift certificate to return! Rating to be updated when I return and try a non-RW meal.

I enjoy the music of Django Reinhardt and wondered how gimicky the restaurant would be for using his name as their own. I don’t know much about his life but loved the Woody Allen movie so I wasn’t sure what to expect. The large space was decorated very well — not cavernous and actually somewhat homey. I loved the use of purple and gold. It was a lunchtime meal and we were seating at elbows-touching distance from the two-top next to us but it didn’t really matter. The food was fantastic and sized appropriately but beware of HUGE pasta dishes. I had the beet salad to start and then the appetizer crabcake as my entrée — I eat a lot and that was plenty of food. The only downer about this experience was that our waiter seemed positively high on something. He interrupted at the wrong times, confused who got what and took a long time to bring the check and then come back to get payment(credit card). To me, four stars is a great overall experience and five stars is super-fantastic, so this one got three. If they had a ½ star, I would have included it.

It’s gorgeous, and right by the Chrysler. It makes you feel like a million dollars. You have to go at night, though, when there are candles everywhere, and it becomes this sensual, velvety lounge. The wine is good, as is the cheese plate. It’s admittedly slightly pricey but somehow that’s justified by the environment. The only thing that threw me off last time I went was the mid-town after-work crowd: lots of men in suits screaming stock market rather than class. Suddenly it lost its charm, and looked like a restaurant designed for men to look powerful and women to look beautiful. I can’t put my finger on why exactly that was. Maybe Django is one of the rare places which are actually nicer on weekends.

Some folks may consider this upscale, trendy midtown located restaurant to be amongst the«get what you pay for» type, but I can assure you its much less than what you should get. The portions were small(even smaller during Restaurant Week), service was rushed, and the prices don’t justify the kind of bland taste and limited menu options. This restaurant aside from its beautiful décor, was strictly average at best. The bread that food servers bring out during the course of the meal are fantastic(raisin bread yum!) as are their exquisite desserts. One shouldn’t have to fork out so much and get so little in return. Truly a major disappointment.

Definitely upscale, modern, very hip for midtown, yet right for power lunches. Becomes more hip in the evening, especially with live jazz in the lounge. Menu is varied, continental, imaginative; wine list extensive. Django works well for business or socially. Service a little uneven, prone to interrupt diners in mid-sentence with those acutely-critical, time-sensitive questions like: «May I take that?» and«How is everything?». Things are fine, guy. Ease down.

Executive Chef Andrew Karasz THROWSDOWN in the kitchen. simply said… some of the best food I have ever had — the lobster roll this past summer was intense… the staff is well trained — the food is beyond. So you think you have crazy knowledge when it comes to wine… after you meet the sommelier you will feel like you know nothing! Derek is amazing and not condesending just put the trust and love in his hands and he will make pairing that will not dissapoint. Django caters to the banker crowd(bear stearns, jp morgan and UBS all have offices nearby) that said there are Very discriminating… and they LOVEDJANGO… Foodies have followed Andy to Django and now Michelin 2007 is out and Django was reviewed for the first time. review mentioning Andy’s inventive cuisine and he received three«forks and Knives» a la Montrachet, Nobu, Mas and some other notables. If you have the pleasure of meeting the chef who meets and greets tell him Cara(prounounced car-ra) sent you… I am such a group-ee!

Impressed with the décor… very upscale :) that goes for the price too… nothing new… it’s Midtown afterall… not too extreme from all the others I’ve been too. If you want an experience… money shouldn’t be a factor: P well worth it :) Enjoy!

Recommended by the concierge at the W up the street. Great recommendation. I was a lone diner that night and the hostesses were clever enough to strategically seat me right next to a table of two men, two rather friendly and convivial men. So not only did I have good company at dinner(which I had not expected), I also had a great meal … Ordered the duck ravioli to start which was excellent. And everything the guys ordered looked and smelled great too, and they assured me it tasted just as good. And I think I followed that with the bass. Sorry, it’s been a while since I went, but I do remember the dishes were full of taste and I remember thinking I wanted to return to try the other items on the menu. All the while, I also enjoyed a glass of decent white wine(all for myself). And at the end, the server assured me that it wouldn’t be weird for me to walk out with the rest of the bottle, since I wasn’t about to sit there all night and finish it myself. Again, great choice. Décor is neat too, especially for such a huge space.
