David Ryan Salon

This is a follow up to my previous two reviews. I had originally set up an appointment with Joshua, but David personally greeted me and gave me the haircut. I received an extensive consultation which ensured our expectations were understood of each other.
I am very happy with my haircut. It was an overall excellent experience.

I am so happy with the cut/​style I received from Jill at David Ryan Salon. She listened to every request I had as a client and worked with me to explain my hair type and what would and wouldn’t work within my wishes. I’ve grown so tired of relying on my curls as being my «style» and I was ready to take the plunge and really try something fresh and funky. Jill nailed it. I knew from the moment she started creating the shape that she was going to deliver today. Can’t recommend her more!

Go see Kyle and you wont regret it! For as many years as I can remember I got my hair styled by a family member and wouldn’t trust anyone else but when I moved it wasn’t as easy to get there all the time. I visited the salon Kyle was at on a Saturday when I needed a haircut and was in a pinch and since then have become a loyal customer. Kyle is a great stylist and such a pleasure to speak to. My boyfriend has also since became a client of Kyle’s and will not go to anyone else. Kyle does a great job, offers input/​suggestions when asked but will never push you to change your look when you aren’t looking to. I am so excited Kyle is at this salon and will be visiting him here very soon for a new look!

Now I was absolutely terrified when it came to getting my hair cut in not only a new city but in a city full of fakes and people who just don’t care about you or your hair needs. Joshua was an absolute babe, asked me about my hair and what its like, what I wanted to do with it and then he took the time to completely perfect my hair. It came out amazing, exactly what I wanted and he also put amazing products in to it. I came out happy and confident. My boyfriends exact words were «Damn I didn’t recognize you at first and defiantly thought I was about to cheat on you» (not sure if I should worry or not yet.) IN OTHER WORDS, I will be back to see Joshua again for his amazing service, so glad I found a hair salon in the city that actually cares about the client. Also the girl whom washed my hair, gave me an AMAZING scalp massage.

Faye is the absolute best when it comes to cutting hair. I’ve been to Bumble and Bumble, Warren Tricomi, and all the others. Faye is the best. I was in desperate need of a hair cut and was referred to her by a friend who lives in the area. She did not disappoint!
Faye listens and understands what you want and never tries to go to go to the extreme. Her cuts are on point and suit your facial features. She is also a perfectionist and tries really hard to make her customers happy. Her blowouts last for days!
David Ryan salon is very quaint and has a welcoming feel, never stuffy. They also give excellent shampoos. They carry top of the line products for all hair types.

Absolutely love, love, love Jules (also goes by Juliana). I’m the type of person that doesn’t want to spend any time on looks, but still wants to look good! I never in my life went to the same hairdresser twice until I for the first time in my life decided I wanted a boy cut. I got a recommendation to go to Juliana and so I did. I’ve been going back to Juliana over and over again. She’s also very interesting to talk to, which is great when you have to sit still for an hour or so! Never thought I’d be loyal to a hairdresser, but Juliana is truly amazing at what she does and I love how she makes me look.

I visited David Ryan salon for the first time since moving to the city and had a wonderful experience with my stylist, Jill. She’s a true artist and has almost 20 years of experience in the beauty industry. She did a beautiful job on my full head of highlights, and is a master at blonde’s — I now have a beautiful vibrant color to my hair. She also gave me a great trim, taking off all dead ends and nourishing my hair again with fabulous treatments. She’s a stylist that listens to what you want, and will make sure you’re satisfied with the end result.
I highly recommend Jill — she’s brilliant at what she does and truly cares about her clients!

Juels is an absolute genius with hair. She’s been cutting my hair for 4 years now and it takes me a long time to trust people-​I trusted Juels immediately. She knows everything about hair, the way it falls, textures, how temperamental it can be and she knows exactly how to manipulate hair to make it look fabulous-​and not just for the day you walk out of the salon. She makes styles easy for me to do at home-​and it still looks great when I style it on my own. Go see Juels at David Ryan Salon-​you won’t regret it! And, you’ll look fabulous, too!

I’ve been going to Jill at David Ryan for years now and she is truly the best there is. I’m a redhead and have been dying my hair for years. I can honestly say I have never had a colorist better than Jill. She keeps me looking fantastic, both in cut and color. I’m an actor and a standup. So I’m in front of people all the time. I can’t tell you how many compliments my hair gets — it’s one of my calling cards. She’s basically created my signature look. And she’s a great gal! Fun to chat with while my color sets. She’s a phenomenal technician who knows her stuff inside and out. I always tell her she’s never allowed to move away because I will have to move with her. Go to her!

I came to DRS to get highlights… I am always wary when trying out a new salon. I like to be BLONDE… when I walk out. Angela did my hair, and it is gorgeous! She was the perfect mix of cool & professional! Exactly who you want to make you feel awesome sitting in the chair & even more amazing when you walk out the door. Five stars to you, Angela, and all the others that made me feel comfortable, welcome, and made the whole experience perfect!

I’ve been coming to the David Ryan Salon for over a year and I won’t even consider going anywhere else. Everyone in this salon is super nice and friendly. In this city there is nothing harder than finding a talented, experienced, educated, and trustworthy Stylist and I’ve found all of that and more in working with Jules. Jules has an incredibly impressive list of credentials and an unwavering commitment to her profession. Her technical experience coupled with her seemingly boundless energy, and her dedication to client satisfaction all add up to a wonderful experience for her clients. Seriously, this girl rocks. If you are tired of the same old and looking for something new, schedule an appointment with Jules and be ready to be impressed.

I made an appointment with Jill after reading a few great reviews on Unilocal,and I’m so happy I did it!
Jill has a consultative approach — during our first appoint she asked a lot of questions (and had me point out pictures) to see what I liked, and then took the time to sit and discuss the options with me. From the start, I valued and trusted her opinion, and COULD NOT BE HAPPIER! Jill has transformed my hair twice — something I have never experienced before with a hair stylist. She’s the expert and I love that she provides direction and input throughout the entire experience.
I spent years looking for someone in NYC to be my go-​to hair stylist and I have finally found it!

I needed to have my color corrected after a mispackaged drug store dye brand high-​lifted my hair to a shade more appropriate for dog fur. Don’t ask. By way of a friend’s friend’s recommendation, I made an appointment with Maria, the colorist/​owner.
Maria successfully chose shades that complement my skin tone and bring out my eye color. Without even knowing my true hair color, she turned me into an expensive-​looking version of myself. I honestly cannot overstate my satisfaction.
More pros: The salon is artsy without pretense. They had good music on. They offer you tea. The prices are reasonable. I wasn’t pushed toward a retail purchase or a cut (despite the fact that I don’t actually have a hair cut).

Edgardo was able to fix my bad highlights. A few days prior another salon gave me zebra stripped hair. I tried to like it, but broke down searching for a solution. I even contemplated trying to gloss my hair myself. I found out not many places open on a Sunday in HK area. I called David Ryan Salon and set up an appointment that day. I asked for gloss thinking this could buy me some time, but Edgardo suggested lowlights for a permanent fix instead of temporary fix.
He fixed my hair in an hour and now it looks GREAT… thank you!

I don’t want to get into too much detail because the stylist was so nasty and rude however I got a head full of bleed marks when I came in for highlights also they were ½ an inch away from my scalp! and my hair started breaking 3 days later. Such a bad experience.

I found this place after living in the ‘hood and going someplace else. So glad I found this place.
My hair stylist Jill spent time talking to me about my hair, how I wear it, and what I was looking for. She gave me some suggestions about my color, and how I could look better, without being pushy about it.
I went there again today for my second visit, and Jill was awesome… she made me look great, and was mindful of how long she spent with me… I’ve been to other places where it has taken twice as long to look half as good.
The salon has a nice vibe — everyone is very professional there, and they make sure you feel welcomed and comfortable during your visit there.
The prices are not cheap, but not out of line for a New York City Salon.
If you are in the neighborhood, give them a try. I’m confident you won’t be disappointed.

After just having been to David Ryan, I am really surprised to see that it has a 3 star rating. My only guess is that service must vary quite a bit by stylist. All I can say is that I just spent 2 hours with Yvonne for a cut and color and she is GREAT. She hits the mark for everything you look for in a stylist.
1. She helped me pick out the perfect shade of chestnut brown (I am a natural dark blonde), taking into consideration the fact that I have rosy cheeks, so we picked a nice shade with little to no red undertones.
2. She applied the color so adeptly — very fast and thorough. I felt very confident in her ability during the entire process.
3. I showed her a picture of the cut I liked, and she explained the adjustments she would make to make it work better for my [very very very] thin/​fine hair.
4. She knew I’d been growing my hair out and wanted to keep it as long as possible, but still give it a healthy trim. She made it a point to err on the safe side and show me the exact amount she was cutting off before going ahead with the entire cut.
5. She was an absolute perfectionist in making sure that the front was properly and evenly angled in a way that blended in my bangs, angles, and longer layers.
I am so rarely this pleased with a haircut. I recommend Yvonne very highly.

Walking into this place I always feel like I’d been handed a pass to Artsy-​ville. I’ve been coming for years but I’m still enthralled by the hip décor, cool music, and friendly staff who all have their own individual personalities stamped on their clothing and hairstyles.
My original stylist had moved on and my old back-​up has a weird schedule so I’ve been going to a few different ones but they’re all good. Recently, I’ve been getting my haircut from Maria, who owns and runs the place. She’s done a great job with my haircuts and is an engaging conversationalist.
They like to pamper you here with scalp massages while being rinsed, and tea while you wait. I look forward to these monthly visits to Artsy-​ville.

LOVE LOVE LOVE JILL SCHNAPP ! The first time I went to see her at David Ryan Salon, I wanted to go a little shorter and redder in color. She made some suggestions, and I loved her ideas and got really excited. She did an amazing job and I felt a new wave of confidence that I hadn’t felt in a long time. After I left and was walking to catch the subway, I caught a lot of heads turning… a handful of cute guys smiled at me ! It felt good. A few days ago I had my 2^nd appointment with her and I just told her I wanted to feel refreshed and a little different… something new and exciting just in time for New Years Eve. She trimmed my hair to look very edgy and rocker-​girl (totally my thing)… and its a BEAUTIFUL deep rich mahogany tone. I’ve gotten so many compliments.
I can’t even tell you how psyched I am to finally find a place that knows what their doing! Everyone else who works there is genuinely friendly as well.

The only reason I went to this place was because I work around the corner and was able to pop over on my lunch break. I had been growing my hair out for months so that I would have a blank canvas for the perfect bob, and I was really excited.
When the receptionist scheduled my appointment, he made a big deal about how Veronica, the stylist he was giving me, was a SENIOR STYLIST and although her rates were a bit higher than the others’, she was well worth it.
Cut to: me with an expensive, fancy mullet.
I brought three photos of the EXACT haircut I wanted, and I explicitly told Veronica two things: 1. Longer in the front, slightly shorter in the back. 2. Please, for the love of Christ, don’t use a razor on the ends of my hair. (My hair is fine, but because I have a lot of it, people always want to «do a little something to get the weight off those ends», resulting in a lovely helmet look EVERY SINGLE TIME.) I don’t know how I could have been more clear. She kept nodding and saying she TOOOOTALLY got it.
I will say this: I enjoyed the ambiance of the salon; it was cozy, warm, and busy without seeming overcrowded or too loud. I wish I could say that Veronica actually listened to what I was telling her, or used the photos I brought as a reference, because I really enjoyed the environment. (I find that a lot of salons in New York have that cold, industrial feel.) However, I will most certainly NEVER be going back to David Ryan.
While using the razor on my ends, Veronica kept asking, «Are you okay?» I left with a hole in my wallet the size of Benjamin Franklin’s face and one of the worst haircuts I’ve ever had in my life. The front and sides were short, and the back was long enough to put in a pony tail. I felt like I had two different haircuts at the same time. I really TRIED to like it – I gave it a month of growth before I finally just had my friend chop the back off for me, so that I’m once again wearing a helmet that I can’t remove.
Maybe I’ll have better luck next year.
