I have shopped here for many, many years but I shall never ever go back into this store unless it is to speak to the manager. They kicked my 23 year old son out for no reason whatsoever unless it had to do with the fact that my son is hard of seeing — maybe he had to hold labels up close to his one eye to read the ingredients and maybe that didn’t appeal to the woman who had the nerve to tell him to «look around in the street instead.» Unfortunately, I was not there. Had I been there I’d be doing more than writing a negative review on this overpriced«gourmet’s paradise» which few people these days can afford. Perhaps they don’t like the look of a young man who almost died from a severe drug reaction(Stevens Johnson TEN) which resulted in his losing an eye — perhaps they are idiots. Certainly if my son were a Muslim our mayor DeBlasio would make sure this made front page news.

Lapin and I usually visit this supermarket for their fresh bread and harder to find gourmet items. The staff is general nice and helpful. I also like how the lady in the bread section asks if she should slice our bread The supermarket is on the pricer end but it’s worth it for some of the items … the basic items that you can find everywhere else I wouldn’t get it here.

When this market took over the old Balducci’s spot many years ago it was a great store. Sadly, the prepared food department is going down hill, and quick. I’m in the store very often, & prepared food very often doesn’t look fresh, or appealing. The fish & meat counters are still fabulous, fruits & vegetables are hit and miss. Why the upper west side store is maintaining its high standards, and this store is slipping, I have no idea. With Balducci’s & Jefferson Market gone, I hope they can get back to the high quality prepared food, that they displayed when they opened up.

The cakes are super moist, but everything in the bakery is overpriced. The turkey chili and lobster corn chowder are both good and they have little sample cups to try all the soups. It’s good food but definitely not worth the prices

Good, but expensive. Probably the best grocery store in the West Village. Not that saying a grocery store in manhattan is better than others means much – that’s like saying that Chinese water torture is better than being water boarded.

This review is for the the terrible customer service I just encountered over the phone. I love this place and the products are always good and fresh, so I was in complete shock when I got barked at and lied to over the phone when I asked if something was in-stock. Customer service is important to customers when I decide to shop at an establishment, I mean I thought that was common knowledge.

Great staff and the perfect urban selection of small things to nosh on with crackers. Favorites are the chicken salad, chipotle crab dip and roasted carrots! Incredible selection of cheeses, really good bread … Writing this is making me hungry(-;

Overpriced as all Citarella’s are BUT decent selection. Lots of hot and cold foods. Salad bar stays fairly well stocked. Not a big location but it will definitely fit the bill if you’re in need. Good selection of produce. Check out line moves quick but it’s hit or miss on the cashier’s customer service. Overall, I love my Citarella. I’ll take your overpriced food any day over having to walk further. #lazypeopleproblems

This would be a cross in between Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. The prices still reflect West Village but it was still affordable. Space wise Citarella is a bit smaller than your regular Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s but it was by no means cramp. They do have a fresh deli for meats and sell sandwiches in those plastic boxes that they make in house daily. I really only come here for the fruit salads but as I come here more often, I have no doubt that the time I spend here would rival that at Whole Foods(3+ hours). I might need a butler. FAN.

Great organic grocery store if you’re willing to pay much more than you should. Don’t get me wrong, their food is worth it, but it’s grossly overpriced. For a bag of 5 cookies its $ 8. As for the good side, their chicken noodle soup is to DIE for! Before going gluten free, I use to eat their soup like water. It is not too salty, has fresh vegetables, and large sized noodles. Their sushi is about $ 7 – 10 and you get 9 pieces. It’s the best sushi I ever had and wish I could have it everyday. They also had a bottle of gluten free soy sauce which tasted exactly like regular soy sauce. If their prices were lower, I would have given them 5 stars.

High quality butcher, bakery, and cheese!!! Their cheese is superb and really fresh! My fav is truffle cheese. You will see what I mean once you bite into the first piece of that cheese!!! :) Price is little high though.

Cute small grocery store near the PATH station so I could conveniently bring fresh groceries home without too much extra carrying work. They do provide a wide varieties of selections in fruits, bread and even meat and seafood. Definitely my go-to place going forward.

The food in this market is pretty damn pricey. For example $ 3.50 for a chocolate chip cookie. The only bargain I found was $ 2.99 for a cupcake.

Instead of just seething at the JC Morton Williams I need to remember that this is absurdly close to the PATH, so it’s only a 20-minute weekday trip or merely an hour and a half on weekends. The produce is in good shape. I’ve generally been pleased with the Fuji apples and this is one of the few places I’ve seen blood oranges. I think the fennel is the only item at Citarella in which their price is below average. The cost rises sharply when you move away from the fruits and vegetables. Don’t buy anything without a price tag. Gazpacho season should be arriving in about four months.

It’s not quite a Zabar’s-level spot, but it’s special enough to make you feel like you’re having a grocery«experience» and not just checking an errand off your to-do list. Their pastries and holiday cookies are both beautiful and delicious, their butcher counter is the best around for fresh meat, and they sell a unique selection of pre-made foods including rockin’ chicken pot pie. The salad bar is a great lunch option– as are their hot soups. If only it stayed open later! Sure it’s pricey, but actually not much more than places like Gristedes and other comparable stores nearby. If you just resign yourself to the fact that groceries in the Village will cost you more than they should no matter *where* you go, then you’ll be delighted with Citarella.

I’m updating my review and adding a star because of how awesome their fish section is. I wanted to post a picture on Unilocal of their amazing shell fish section, and I had to take THREE pictures to get the whole shell fish section. Just the shell fish! Way better selection than other similar high priced markets(whole foods) and last time I was there I counted 7 or 8 different kinds of oysters available for purchase. The fish mongers are always super nice and knowledgeable, on my last visit I got clued into the fact they sell live crawfish, but even better than that I can special order 2 – 4 pound bags of fresh crawfish tails! No work, just tails. I don’t even want to know how much that costs, but I’ll start saving now.

There is something about this grocery store that makes me want to keep coming back. Maybe it is because it is never crowded. Perhaps, it is because it small, yet always seems to have everything I need(without having to decide between 1200 brands) or likely it is because of the high quality of food. The selection of seafood is excellent – I recently made a delicious shrimp pasta, with fresh shrimp purchased here. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, I recommend that you ask because often what you need is there somewhere. Whatever it is, I find myself avoiding the bigger chains and coming here. The prices aren’t cheap, but the quality, ambiance and competition make it worth it.

A high-end Italian gourmet market that is excessively overpriced but carries good quality food with ignorant servers who know about food. With a good close friend, she inquired in the bakery department if any of their chocolate layered cakes contain liquor which to our surprise the staff’s cold and immediate response was a callous«no.» Personally, I believe the bakery department are blatantly ignorant to baking and cooking or to the food world. Citarella has a good seafood and meat department, respectively.
