Ordered Berner wurstel and reuben sandwich. Not sure why people were saying the reuben sandwich is the best in NYC. Some bites were quite good, especially the ones with a lot of fat, but some bites weren’t. Sausage was good but really tasted like it could have been cooked by Sam’s club.

I wish it was possible to give a place more than five stars, because Café Katja deserves then. I went last night and cannot wait to go back! Everything we had was amazing. You should definitely try to homemade liverwurst. I can’t stop thinking about it! We’re already planning to go back next weekend. On top of having delicious everything, the prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is great. I highly recommend to anyone!

unless you’re german/austrian, you’ll have no idea what half the items on the menu are. SO, let me spare you the embarrassment. 1. emmentaler sausage is a sausage mixed with a medium hard swiss cheese. 2. quark dumplings are a german cheese dumpling.(combined with the above sausage, this makes for a pretty heavy dish, not ideal for lactose intolerant individuals) 3. i hope you know what bratwurst and sauerkraut are. 4. preiselbeeren is lingonberry sauce. it comes with the wiener schnitzel(fried pork cutlet) 5. berner würstel is a sausage wrapped in bacon 6. You may be familiar with meatballs, and they’re DELICIOUS here.(also, they’re huge and swimming in yummy mashed potatoes) the apple tart with whipped cream is on point. THERE, now you’re a café katja expert :) overall, awesome!

I made my reservations for Café Katja in advance. Party of 9, Saturday evening at 8 pm, the week before Christmas. The promise of delicious sausages reminiscent of time spent in Germany and Austria over the summer was something to look forward to. I was happy to find that Café Katja is spacious, with a warm, cozy elegance. The bar being centrally situated really gives life to the place, without infringing on intimacy. The food was hearty, flavorful and did not disappoint. For starters, we ordered sausage samplers and charcuterie plates for the table. Everything was enjoyable, but the liverwurst and kraut were stand-out among our group. Of the entrees, our group sampled the schnitzel, the Austrian meatballs, the creamed spinach, the salmon, the emmentaler sausage, the berner wurstel, and the bratwurst. Only smiling faces all around. The salmon was a happy surprise– I would not have thought to order the salmon, myself, but upon tasting it, I was enamored. The fish was a perfect medium, the accompanying sauce was verdant and delicious. The schnitzel was tender, seasoned well, and the larger-than-life portion brought back the strongest sense of silly nostalgia from my trip overseas. That schnitzel was probably my favorite bite of the night, even over my own(completely yummy) berner wurstel. The berner wurstel was cheesy, wrapped in bacon, and accompanied by a killer potato salad. Can’t really go wrong, there. Of the desserts: The apple strudel(with schlag) was pretty good. The schlag was a bit tangy(I would imagine the cream is cultured?) and actually paired super well with chocolate cake– which was molten, dark and sumptuous. A very indulgent night, indeed. It’s equally possible to enjoy a lighter, more sensible meal at Café Katja– as previously mentioned, the salmon was standout delectable, but it was also a nicely balanced dish that offered up healthful Omega 3 fatty acids, to boot! Last but not least, the staff was accommodating, friendly, helpful and very gracious toward a large, spirited group. Overall, Café Katja delivers in all respects, at a very fair price point. Will absolutely return; probably to try the brunch offerings!

I am not a big fan of German food in general as I always think of a thick and heavy meal. Last weekend I was with my friends and we were looking for a good place to eat. My former roommate told me that it was a very good restaurant so I was like why not? We went there and order some different dishes. We were all very surprised about the quality of the meat and the food in general! It is a very good address for winter and I am happy to see that the business is going well for them! will defenitely come back!
