This is probably the best generalized grocery store in the near vicinity. It’s the only one with decent produce — the produce isn’t consistently amazing or anything, but it’s often been more appealing than the stuff at the greenmarket on 125th near Malcolm X. They also have a good selection of produce items — lots of different types of green leafy vegetables including often kale, fresh beets, organic celery and lettuces, snow peas in their pods, baby portobella mushrooms, many varieties of apples, etc. It has a reasonable selection of ethnic foods, including things like plantain leaf, and, blessed be, sometimes has fat-free cottage cheese, which is more or less impossible to find in Harlem. They’ll also sometimes have really good markdowns on off-brand staples like pasta. The store is definitely very small, but it still manages to have a much more worthwhile selection than much larger ones nearby. I also have to give a shout-out to the pet section — they actually carry Feline Pine cat litter, and seem to be extremely consistent in the selection of food brands.(Have you ever run out of cat food and tried to switch? Ha, ha!) Also, I’ve never had a problem using my own bag here, like some of the other commenters have said…

It’s over crowded, has a VERYPOOR meat selection, has a VERYPOOR fresh veggies and fruits selection, and the staff can be downright nasty. I love the neighborhood(i live a block away), and I come here often for pre-packaged foods(read — milk, crackers, canned food). I’ve been stopped at the door and told I can’t enter with my own shopping bags, but then sometimes I can go in with my own bags… They love to double/triple bag everything. I will continue to brave Wholefoods at Time Warner for my fresh food needs.

Of the limited foggy-windowed options in the area, this C Town grocery store has really improved in my last year of residence down the block. Their varitey of produce and meats is especially impressive for the area, though the turnover still isn’t super high, so I fare better with more frequent visits to pick up produce within a few days of delivery. Red leaf lettuce, herbs, various roots veggies, lots of greens and fruit. Good one. Besides that it’s your basic uptown supermarket. And check this out — the deli is not gross looking! The guy who works there is nice and you get a can of soda with a sandwich. I asked for pickles on my sandwich and he cut slices off of one of the big jarred pickles. Score. Prices aren’t at all bad either. Basic, but totally handy.
