Books of Wonder

I stumbled upon Books of Wonder and it is such an adorable shop! I went in just to look around and ended up buying a vintage canvas Wizard of Oz bag and placing an order for a book that I was told by big/​chain bookstores would never available. Both my Grandmother and Mom were children’s librarians and they would have loved this store! Great selections, extremely helpful staff that clearly love their jobs and ongoing events that children and their parents will enjoy. Storytime was just starting while I was there and if I hadn’t had somewhere to be, I probably would have stayed! I will definitely be back!

I came here years ago on a trip to New York City. And now I’m living in NYC, and I found it again! What a fun place. I’m definitely coming back here when i can just browse and browse to my hearts content!

Excellent children’s book store. Aisles are clearly labeled making it easy to find the age group and genre you’re looking for. Super helpful staff with a large selection of wools to choose from. They even have a rare books section to marvel at. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a great independent children’s book store.

I felt like I walked into book heaven! I’m a huge bookworm and it saddens me when bookstores are disappearing left and right. However, I have hope that bookstores will continue in the world because of bookstores like this!
I love how they have books signed by the authors and the environment is brightly colored and inviting. I wish I had unlimited money to buy all the books there but alas, I was only able to buy two and call it a day.

Should be called «Books of Dumb Down». The staff and management are totally unaware of books for gifted children. Although this place is large, the focus of books is on the lowest common denominator of children’s and y/​a literature. Such a disappointment. If your children are a bit slow they will find a treasure trove here. If they are the least bit smart, unlike the staff, run run away.

Loved this place! I spent like 3 hours there. People were helpful. The books are awesome! some books have signatures of the authors like Harry Potter. They have separate department that has rare and old books. Winnie the pooh was from 1920s, Harry Potter with signature and many many other books. You can ask the staff to open those rare and old books because they are in glass bookshelf. They also sell those rare and old books. In general, I loved this place. A lot of books, pretty and old ones. I wish I could buy all of them.

This place reminds me of being a kid.
That’s honestly the reason I go back. Yeah, okay I do like reading Young Adult novels and this bookstore has plenty of them. But sometimes I go to the back and look at the signed books there and think wow, I read that book when I was younger. I look at the classic Harry Potter books with the covers we all know and love and then a wave of nostalgia washes over me. I love the new Harry Potter book covers, but it’s nice seeing a large part of my childhood commemorated in this book store.
ambiance: quiet but not too quiet which is expected when its so family friendly. The decorations are lovely.
service: these people look like they KNOW books, and in my experience, they definitely do. Polite and non judgey when I bought just a tote bag and no books the first time I went there. What can I say, I love tote bags

I stumbled upon this bookstore and it is awesome. There are what would seems as never ending rows of colorful, wonderfully illustrated books that are enticing to any book lover.
The staff here is very helpful with finding the perfect book to your liking based on previous items you’ve read but should try to curb personal conversations when in earshot of customers.
The rows are a little tight but organized to perfection based on genre and age. I would highly recommend this bookstore. It is very cool!

Great for the kids. Bring them for story time.

This place is incredible! Story time is a must do event for anyone with kids. They don’t just read the words, but they read the books with all the fun they deserve.
The book selection is great, and there are lots if special editions if you need a gift.

My secret weakness is reading children’s classics such as Laura Ingalls Wilder and Roald Dahl, and I don’t care if that makes me the uncoolest adult in New York City. Books of Wonder helps facilitate my secret with their huge selection of children’s literature, not to mention their bookshelf full of Oz books. I bet you guys thought it stopped at the Wizard of Oz, huh? Nerp!
The staff are super friendly and know their children’s literature back and forth, as they were so excited to talk in depth about the books I was purchasing. I also asked about another author, which they admitted were out of stock but wanted to chat about the particular book I was looking for. I received a reusable bag (to help me hide my secret addiction, shh) and some coupons to use for next time.
The fact that they’re an independent bookstore still surviving in the dawn of Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. makes them really awesome, and I’ll definitely be back to support them (and my habit).

Wonderful bookstore! Awesomely amazing staff! Great selection! Impressive museum area with rare books. Big enough to spend some time in. Fair prices! They told me it’s been here for 35 years which is cool!

A friend of mine from when I lived in NYC introduced me to this store on one of my visits after I had my son. Since then, I never miss a chance to shop here when we are in the city. We recently popped in while there for our annual trip to the US Open in Aug and bought so many books for our son that we had them ship them to us in CA. NEVER have I seen such an amazing collection of children’s books. Anything you could possibly want. HUGE selection. It’s really amazing and you could easily spend an hour in there and lots of money. In any case, when the box arrived, the books were lovingly and painstakingly wrapped in brown paper. In addition, they threw in some reusable bags with their logo on them. The service is fantastic. What more could you ask for?! Love this store.

I really like this bookstore. We went to NYC and our daughter asked us for a fairy book. Apparently, this is not as easy as it would sound. After going to several bookstores, B&N, some small local ones, this was the only bookstore we could find that had the request fairy books. You could tell it was a wonderful independent bookstore, and I hope it will there when I come back to NY.

THIS BOOKSTORE IS THE MOST AMAZING THING I’VE STUMBLED UPON in weeks. if you’ve even talked to me in the last week, you would’ve heard me espousing about this. and the new oliver jeffers art work for sale. i didn’t even know who he was until i walked in.
i also want to have children* now so that i can impart upon them how great reading is… hopefully in this store.

Beautiful store with an excellent selection of children’s books. The space is bright and welcoming, and the store contains tons of books without feeling cramped. The staff is friendly and efficient. I’ve been a voracious reader for as long as I can remember, and standing in this store brought back so many memories of books I’ve known and loved.
I should mention that I visited this store to attend a signing featuring Neil Gaiman and Adam Rex for their book Chu’s Day. It was a huge event, and the store was very busy, but the experience still somehow managed to be immensely personal and enjoyable. Staff members were helpful and upbeat, which is not easy at 7 PM after an all-​day event. I’ve been to big book events at other places, and staff can seem frazzled and agitated, but not here. Everyone was more than professional: they seemed to actually *like* their jobs and made the experience so pleasant that I can’t say enough nice things about them. When we were on our way out, the guy working the counter asked us if we’d had a good time. It was like an extra cherry on top of an already-​delicious sundae. Someone (Peter, I think his name was?) even took the time to chat with my husband, me, and our nine-​month-​old son about raising a future reader.
I live in Pennsylvania now and only visit the city a few times a year, but I have a feeling this will be one of the spots I make it a point to visit again and again. This is the kind of business that you want to see last. Their passion for books and the people that make them shines, and it’s refreshing to know that places like this still exist.

A amazing book store for children. Every time I go I spend $ 100 – there is just so much to discover. Their staff really knows every book. Tell them your kid likes mountain adventures and they will direct you to several titles you never would have found on your own. As much as I order from Amazon when I am at home this place makes me understand what I am missing when I just point and click, especially when buying kids books. A must see store.

What a freakin’ gem! I’m going to liken the store’s revolving doors to the wardrobe from Narnia because as soon as you walk in, you are in a magical, magical world. Amazing selection of new and old children’s and YA literature, with lots of signed copies available (I thought John Green’s signed copies of TFiOS were all gone, but nope, there’s several copies still here!). Really great, and if it wasn’t so far away from me (wah wah wah, the woes of living in Brooklyn), I would be here every week.

I never outgrew my love for children’s literature. Wonderful children books have the magical property to whisk me away from the humdrum life and into an enchanted world where elves and faeries live and magic still exists. Or I’m transported back to the «Wild Wild West» where I have to keep a lookout for bandits and work the land alongside my Pa.
I was absolutely delighted to see that Books of Wonder had all of the great children classics that are no longer sold in the big chain bookstores. I greeted them like old friends. They also carry new children books that will one day be considered classics. I immediately wanted to grab a book, sit on the floor, and read just as I used to do when I was a kid. Not to mention, the large locked bookcase at the back of the store, they sell rare collectibles. Looking for the original Wizard of Oz series? They have them. Tolkien? Got that too.
If you have a child or know of a child or still have a child-​like love and wonder for books, I can’t think of a better place to get a gift than Books of Wonder.
