I’ve bought way too many pieces of furniture here over the years. I discovered the guy who owns it before he even had an official shop in Soho via a story in NY Mag about up and coming furniture designers. Since then, he’s gone big time and his custom made stuff is big money. His creations are beautiful for the most part, and some of it, such as his dining tables and dressers, are extraordinary. Very few people do the quality of work he’s doing today, which is why it costs a fortune and why the lead time is at least 16 weeks. Unless they happen to have it made already, which is possible for some things like chairs, prepare to wait. Their show space on Crosby is pretty neat. It’s worth a peek even if you have no intention of buying a thing. Things to look out for, other than the dressers and tables, include their beautiful round mirrors, funky vacuum tube clocks and their beds. I’m not too crazy about the couches they have in the store as of this review. They don’t look as high end or modern as the other stuff, and because there is no visible wood element or striking feature to the couches, they have kind of a mid-market, Crate and Barrel look to them. That’s not a bad thing at all, but it is at BDDW. I’d rethink those couches or place them further out of sight. The sales people can be a bit cold. It’s a lot better than clingy, I suppose. But maybe work on that and find a middle ground. I sometimes feel like I’m invading whatever they were doing before I walked in to potentially buy several thousand dollars worth of their stuff. Ohhh…to end on a positive note… don’t forget to check out their lighting either. They have some crazy beauteous lights.

Keep in mind that most of the reviews here are talking about the furniture and not the retail store. The furniture is definitely more interesting than what you would find at your average furniture store. For those who want to know what the retail store is like: the service is abysmal. the sales person was quite rude, incredibly slow, and took some effort to put on a passive aggressive display of his disdain for us as consumers. i went in as a potential buyer and walked out and wrote this review. for the service we encountered, you would think i walked into an art gallery and asked if a jackson pollock was a finger painting. this was for a $ 10,000 media stand … to support a jumbo flat panel TV from some sad factory overseas. it makes no sense, i know. i appreciate the idea of modern american craftsmanship, but as echoed by other reviews — for the money, i’d rather work directly with a craftsman and not some jerk working retail in soho. or, go to ABC where you will find interesting pieces and fantastic service.

While I adore the handcrafted and gorgeous pieces at BDDW, I believe the place to be some trust fund vanity project. The pieces are shockingly expensive. And gorgeous. Just gorgeous.

The BDDW showroom is a brilliant space. The craftsmanship of each piece is undoubtedly genius. The 5 – 10 minutes I spent in the showroom was glorious. However, I was asked repeatedly if I had any questions about any of the pieces by every employee, and after I said I was just looking to the last employee, he asked me to leave. He said the showroom was by appointment only(BS), and they don’t have it posted but want to keep it that way(doesn’t make any sense). You should post it or at least lock the door you stuck up a-holes! As soon as they made the assumption that I don’t have money or wasn’t going to buy anything they kicked me out. My father owns a ton of BDDW pieces and now I look at them and see ugliness.

My apartment looks like a dorm and I’m up to my eyeballs in decades old Ikea. Truth be told, I have yet to fix this because I’m lazy(and broke… mainly because my damn stomach is always making unreasonable demands for sushi and wine and good food). Until you stumble upon bddw, and all of this changes. Gorgeous wood mounted nixie clocks. Leather wrapped mirrors and perfect wooden benches. But the piece de resistance? The tables: they are made from single pieces of wood, expertly honed to perfection with cast iron legs, custom made to any size. The cost… well let’s put it this way… 2,772 all you can eat sushi dinners at Funayama for my favorite table. Hmmmm… sushi for 7.6 years straight or a table to eat it on? Tough call. My stomach actually was worried that I would consider abandoning it for a table. But then it realized that the table cost more than I make in a year. And my stomach felt safe, my heart broke and my Ikea remained.

Simple, clean, innovative… brilliant designs. The shop and all its contents are breathtaking. You may be tempted to label it modern but the craftsmanship is something learned from many years of experience. Solid wood is mostly used and harmonized beautifully with other material. They can do some customized work on exisiting pieces. Proceed with caution, can become a very expensive addiction.
