Those who visit the Essex Street Market for the more upscale specialty food businesses(which are wonderful) might not bother giving Batista a second look. It’s a Latino grocery and produce stand, and the smell of bacalao and smoked salt herring hangs in the air sometimes. I like that. I also like being called Papi at the counter. I need some of what they sell, and it’s hard to beat their prices on stuff like cilantro, hot peppers, limes and the like. Yeah, places like this are a dime a dozen. They even have a similar competitor just north of them in the market. But I wouldn’t want to do without Batista, because after I’ve splurged on some $ 20+/lb cheese at Saxelby or Fromaggio the ability to get 10 limes for a buck is a balm to my soul.
