Absolutely perfect. I knew I wanted a birdcage veil, but a year’s worth of research didn’t turn up anything that was either the quality or the look that I wanted. Holly’s communication was clear and her responses were immediate. She wasn’t pushy at all when it came to trying on options as I made up my mind. Luckily, we had close to four months before the day, and while I told her she could take her time, I had my veil in only two weeks! It was a perfect fit – both on my head and for the feel of the wedding. I was feeling good about supporting a small business, but Holly was the one who ended up supporting me!

Holly is great. I emailed her a week before my wedding to see if she had any ready made pieces available, and she wrote me back same day. Communication was easy, she answered all my questions via email before the appointment, and when I arrived at our agreed upon time, she was ready with several pieces for me to try. She was totally patient and not at all pushing me to purchase anything. I left with a beautiful feather clip, and can’t wait to wear it on the big day.

Holly designed my bridal head piece(bird cage style with beautiful comb) three years ago. I look at my wedding pictures & I still get a thrill from it all. She was personable and so laid back. I highly recommend her services.

The Wedding is over and I must give credit where it is due. Holly, Holly, Holly! She delivered like no other. I did some research and found Artikal on Unilocal.I made an appt, showed her my dress and hairstyle and we tried on a few head pieces. I took a few days to think abt it and visit another person/shop just to make sure I knew what I wanted. I contacted Holly immediately and moved forward. She is a pleasure to work with! Very professional and knowledgeable at what she does. I’m happy I found her and extremely happy with my birdcage veil! I will recommend Holly to everyone looking for a head piece. Thank You Holly!

I’m not exactly sure where to start. I learned about Artikal through online research. My wedding dress is a vintage inspired style that goes perfectly with a birdcage veil. I contacted Holly and made an appointment. I came into her east side locale with both my parents. Immediately, I felt comfortable. She has a warmness to her that’s very comforting. She is patient, knowledgeable, and kind. I showed her a picture of my dress and anticipated hairstyle. She knows and understands exactly which styles worked best. I was able to try different feathers, different cut veils, and explore. It was really amazing putting it all together with my father by my side. The best aspect of her veils is that you essentially create the style that you love. This, together with her good advice and knowledge are GREAT help. My vision included swarvoski crystals, feathers, and a blusher veil. When I came to pick it up today, I fell in love with the end product. I wish I had given her a great big hug!

Holly from Artikal doesn’t write the prettiest emails, but makes the most amazing veils. I’ll take it! Her studio space is very cool, in Alphabet City. When I made an appointment to meet with her(be aware: she has limited studio appointment hours), I didn’t know what to expect. I knew I wanted a cage veil and fascinator, and had seen both on her website for rates that are fair for two handmade items. In her studio, you’re surrounded by samples of different veils, fascinators, and hats — oh, the hats! — all made by Holly. Since Holly makes everything in her shop(and offers classes too!), all the pieces are interchangeable, and you can design to your hearts’ content. She knows just how to try different pieces on your head, switching them out and pinning with ease. I picked out a small cage veil and feather circular fascinator, which she custom made with the type of buttons and feathers I loved. I was able to have two veil looks, one for ceremony and one for reception, which Holly gave me the idea for. The turnaround time she quoted me was very short and she even finished ahead of time. Very happy with Holly and her work — don’t hesitate to contact her!

I went to Artikal for a batchelorette party where we all made our own fascinators. We got great guidance and an amazing array of supplies to play with. I’d highly recommend it if you or your friends are crafty and feel like doing something a little different.

In world where people want to rip you off as soon as you say«wedding», Holly is a godsend. She’s also super talented. I tried on a ton of headpieces and fascinators before I went to Artikal. I had a very clear idea of what I wanted and knew it would have to be custom made. Holly worked with me by combining some of the pieces she had already done until we came up with a custom style that worked. I also had two feather fascinators made for my attendants and the price came out to much less than any piece I had tried on elsewhere OR high quality, handmade pieces I had been looking at online. Holly standard turnaround time was also quicker than other place’s «rush» times. I’m excited to wear my piece at my upcoming wedding. So excited, in fact, that when I was invited to a wedding in England this summer I rushed over to Artikal to have Holly make me a cocktail piece(the English love their hats at weddings). I showed her the dress and she started pulling out samples and materials until we had designed what I am sure will be another unique piece. Worth EVERY penny. Actually, worth way more. Holly is a steal.

I took a vintage cowboy hat to Holly for restoration, and she did an excellent job. It was kind of tricky; this is a 60s black beaver hat that’s lost its nap in places, has stains in others. The sweatband inside was literally hanging by a thread, and other milliners had said it would probably have to be replaced with grosgrain ribbon – which wouldn’t have been a total deal-breaker, but I like having the original band that says«4XXXXBEAVER» in it. She freshened it up so the felt looks new and velvety; the best thing is that she had a real light touch in doing it. It basically looks the same, but now it might last fifty more years!

Artikal Millinery is just adorable! Artikal Millinery does not have a store front, and the only way you can try on Holly Slayton’s hats is either by appointment or at craft fairs/bridal shows. I first found out about Artikal Millinery at Bust Magazine Craft Fair and then attended a cocktail hat workshop at Holly’s studio later this month. Even though the cocktail hat workshop is advertised 4-hours long, we actually finished making hats under 3 hours. Holly first kicked off the workshop by introducing millinery suppliers in the neighborhood, and went on by showing us how she made those cute cocktail hats. After 20 minutes of Intro + Q&A, we were then off making our own cocktail hats.(just a note: basic sewing skill is required! :) Artikal Millinery’s cocktail hat workshop only costs $ 55 and I walked away with my first hand-made cocktail hat I will surely wear at many events to come.

Ok, this definitely needs some more recent stars. I went to Artikal looking for a non-traditional veil(read: birdcage). I’d been to a couple of bridal salons looking for them, but the stock is typically small and they have no idea how to put it on for you to get an idea of how you’d look. I had almost given up on a veil entirely when I found Artikal. She’s super responsive via e-mail, which is excellent. The limited hours are still applicable, but that’s actually perfect for stopping in after work during the week. If you want weekends, check her out at the Brooklyn Flea or other local craft fairs. She’s got tons of designs of shorter veils to try, and literally a wall full of fascinators that can be customized to your exact preference. She’ll even take a piece of your gown(chopped for alterations) and work it in if you want. I haven’t actually picked up my veil and fascinator yet, but you don’t pay for anything until you go in and approve the end product, so I’m not worried at all about the final result. Veils take a couple of weeks(totally reasonable) and are reasonably priced as well. The net veil itself(standard birdcage) was $ 65, with another $ 65 for my fascinator. Other fascinators are similarly priced, give or take, depending on how fancy and involved they are. Also, her hats look amazing, but I was on a mission and on a budget, so I stuck with just the wedding-related items.

My fabulous colleague Thea and I are on a mission — we’re bringing hats back. There’s nothing like a fancy cocktail hat(or an adorned headband or silk flower pin, if you like) to make you feel all kinds of fashionable and feminine and fabulous. And let’s face it – you have to have a certain level of confidence to rock one, because we don’t live in a particularly hat-friendly society. A trip down to this little underground East Village boutique will remind you why we need to change that. The owner Holly is super friendly and will indulge your request to try on a few(or fifty) of her fantastic creations. Whether you want a cocktail hat full of feathers, a winter wool cloche with a pop of color or a unique bridal headpiece to assure all eyes stay on you during your special day, Artikal is the place for you. I got a beautiful cocktail hat to wear as a guest at an upcoming wedding(will post pictures after). Of course, it was custom-made in the fabric and colors of my choosing. If I had my wish, I would have purchased at least 10 hats and created occasions to wear them(let’s see… speakeasy cocktail night, afternoon tea with the ladies or JUSTBECAUSE)! The prices are pretty reasonable as well(many cocktail hats are under $ 100). Definitely a splurge, but come on, as L’oreal tells us – you’re worth it! And best of all, Holly offers frequent millinery classes, so you can(attempt to) learn how to make your own hat. Because Holly is a new Mom, she has select hours(Tuesday and Thursday evenings). But she also brings her merchandise to street fairs around the city and her Web site is pretty comprehensive as well. She’s even got some dapper looks for you gentlemen out there. So come on, New York Unilocalers, we can do it. Let’s bring back hats. I know you don’t want me calling you a hattist.

um, holy hell this is the greatest find i’ve made in the past year. holly of artikal is the most amazing hat crafter. i was directed to her site by a friend who knew i was looking for a very chic little bridal headpiece doo-dad. holly emailed me back immediately when i contacted her and invited me to visit her very cute little studio in the east village. it is hat heaven in there! she was so awesome and helpful and patient and let me try on a gazillion bridal veils and half veils and blushes and whatnot. she is custom making me the most gorgeous little asymmetrical half veil with a custom side piece that i can wear solo during the reception. i’m not too keen on pearls and the sample side piece had a cluster of them and when i asked her about replacing them she whipped out a gorgeous vintage brooch that she plans to use on my piece instead. so amazing, such great stuff and her prices are beyond reasonable. i also tried one a few of her fall hats and they are absolutely marvelous! her cloches and caps were all tremendous and beautifully made. she will custom make any hat you’d like or if you see something you love but aren’t crazy about the color she will happily do it up in a shade you prefer. i think i just found myself a personal hat maker! how very posh!
