Alter Knit New York

Wonderful experience ! I sent my husbands favorite (old) sweater to this company. Needless to say it needed some major TLC. I spoke to the gal & explained it was old & needed repair, but I was afraid to send it. She asked to send a photo first. After which she answered & said it was fixable, but it would take time. I sent it. low & behold I received it about month later & it looked beautiful& brand new. All the holes had vanished, all the snags fixed& even the leather patches were re –stitched. An extra bonus which I didn’t ask about! My husband was astonished & said that was the best early Christmas present ever! As for me, this experience that I thought would b a difficult one & may I say risky. because of his attachment to the sweater proved to b an easy & happy one. thanks to the the care & attention of this company!

Very disappointed with their results. I brought a pair of suit pants with a 1 – 2 centimeter rip near the knee. They charge about the same as the more well known and more highly regarded reweavers but the result looked as if they just stitched in a square patch. For this result I could have used the dry cleaners down the road and saved $ 120.

Expensive and poor communication from the business. My credit card was charged for a high amount. I received the sweater, and it looked good. However, there was no receipt with the sweater to indicate why I had been charged so much. Given the unexpected high price and the poor communication I would probably not use the service again

Alterknit has surpassed my expectations by fixing some badly damaged cashmere sweaters that I thought that could not be repaired. I tried going to my tailor for a previous repair and it was not done well. It was noticeable and did not look good. I’m really glad that I found Alterknit because they provide a great service and made this whole process very easy for me.
I even had one with leather trimming and it came back free of holes, cleaned, all the fuzzies were gone, and it was delivered to my doorstep.
I have had some of these sweaters for a couple years now and I am very happy that I did not have to spend all this time and money running around to find a replacement. When I was told that my sweaters could be returned to new, I told them to go ahead do what they needed.
I looked up Alterknit on Unilocal before calling to read some reviews and check out their pictures– the pictures don’t lie. The whole experience was great, easy, and the staff at Alterknit were professional and answered all my questions. They definitely delivered on their end and I would recommend this service to any friends or family.

I sent a very nice, but loved, Tory Burch cashmere sweater to AlterKnit in January of this year. I received no confirmation that they had received it or any type of quote. So in March I reached out and asked the status just to confirm they had my sweater. They responded and said «We are in busy season still.» and that I was in line.
SIX MONTHS LATER, still no word from them and I sent a follow up email, they never responded. I called today thinking that may be a better way to get ahold of someone, have yet to hear anything back.
Hopefully this review will be a call to action for better customer service and for someone to get back to me. 10 months vs. their quoted six weeks on their website is ridiculous.

So appreciate these guys!
When I received a newsletter from Shop Harpers Bazaar and saw a little thing about these people, I thought I’d give them a try. Now i’m in love! A big, big thank you to Alterknit.

This is my new go to place. I was searching for a knit repair shop online and came across Alterknit New York. Two of my cashmere sweaters had a few holes in them and needed knit repair. Not only did they do a fantastic job fixing my sweaters, they also cleaned the garments. When I received them back they were good as new.
I was so thrilled to find out they also provide shoe repair. I sent them a pair of my Louboutins that were a little scuffed and they dyed them to perfection.
The people at Alterknit deserve five stars for my items that needed TLC.

It seemed too good to be true, and it was.
I would rather not waste anymore of my time getting angry about my experience with Alterknit, but I think it’s important that other potential customers are warned. So, here is the very short story…
I shipped 6 cashmere sweaters with various amounts of damage, some with minor holes, some with major damage. I asked that all of them be fixed as best they could AND cleaned. After 16 weeks they were finally sent back to me, with only ONE fixed and none of them cleaned, some with more damage then when I had sent them. The one that was fixed was fixed well, but it was surely not worth all of the complications and frustrations of the experience. The communication was horrible/​almost non-​existent. Despite numerous attempts to get a date when I could expect to get my sweaters back, I never got a response.
As an apology, they didn’t charge me anything… however this is the least they could do for keeping my sweaters sitting there, dirty, for 4 months which allowed minor spots to turn into stains.
Clearly some people have had great experiences with Alterknit. Maybe I just got unlucky. But, the treatment I received was incredibly unprofessional and aggravating.
P. S. I ended up finding a place in San Francisco, where I live called HB Alterations, that was able to fix every one of these sweaters amazingly well and in 2 weeks!!! And for a very good price, $ 100 for 6 sweaters. So, if you live in SF, I highly recommend HB.

I dropped off two sweaters for repair, one a favorite that was full of holes Miriam’s work is excellent. I would recommend Alter Knit for repair of well-​loved and well-​worn knits, or really any difficult repairs. I was not 100% pleased with the customer service. I was promised an email with an estimate for the work before it was started. I didn’t hear anything for a month, did not get a response to an email asking for an update, then received an email saying my sweaters were ready. By the time I got the email, Alter Knit had already charged my credit card, even though I never got an estimate and never okayed the amount charged. Having read the reviews here, I was not entirely surprised but I would have appreciated a heads up as promised.

Miracle workers! Always check with them before throwing out the favorite sweater that you thought you killed.

I own exactly one piece of cashmere, and after 3 years a hole started to form in the sleeve.
I called up Alter Knit and spoke to Miriam, and after describing the hole (the exact size of a dime), she quoted me $ 75 for a repair. I filled out their form online and they came to pick it up later that day for free.
After seeing the hole Miriam told me she’d have to take fabric from the sleeve to repair it, then even out the sleeves, which would come to $ 100.
A week later she dropped it back off to me (also free), and it was good as new– you couldn’t even tell there had been a hole there!
My cashmere was extra thin, and had a unique stitching pattern, so I was really pleased with the end result. Thanks guys!

My favorite Theory sweater had developed a gaping hole on the left chest — and I was devastated. Alter Knit repaired the hole, which was even more amazing because the sweater was an open knit with alternating 1-​inch stripes of varying material (metallic-​type thread and black yarn). The hole covered both types of thread. And when I got it back from Alter Knit there was not only no hole, but there was no sign of the hole! The package arrived in San Francisco less than 3 weeks after I sent it for repair. Overall, good service and responsiveness, and excellent workmanship — thanks for saving my favorite sweater!

They do a nice job but not as organized communication as other knit repair companies.
Sent in another garment, wrote on the packing slip /​note inside the package to please tell me the cost after evaluating the garment, before fixing it. (This is a normal practice at other knit repair companies I have used.) I never received any communication from Alterknit until the garment was finished and I was being asked to pay (for a price I did not ok in advance).

Just don’t have high expectations. They probably do okay with small holes.
Based on their website, I thought alter knit could restore my Vince cashmere sweater. I didn’t care what it cost. I had a 1×2 inch tear in the elbow of my sweater which I had sent a picture of in advance in the «can we fix it» tab. They said they could fix it so I mailed it over.
When the sweater arrived at alter knit, we played phone tag for a week. I called twice in the morning and left messages requesting that they email me due to my work schedule. Didn’t accommodate that request at all. Basically they told me that in addition to the hole, there was more damage to the sleeve and I had 2 options:
1. shorten the sleeves, $ 125 in 3 weeks
2. apply patches, $ 125 in 3 weeks
Incorporating more fabric wasn’t an option and ultimately I wasn’t getting what I had wanted which was a full length long sleeve sweater so I asked them to send it back (took about 15 business days).
I had to pay for shipping. They told me about $ 15 round trip from CA to NY.
Prices start at about $ 45 and go up.

Beautiful work! Alter Knit is a true jewel! Exceptional workmanship and a pleasure to work with! They made it so easy with their free shipping and my items came back looking brand new! I highly recommend Alter Knit to anyone looking to repair their knitwear!

Fixed a hole in my favorite sweater, identified another I hadn’t noticed too. Unique and reliable service.

This place is awesome. I had somehow gotten a hole in a cashmere sweater I loved and was really upset about it so started trying to see if it could be fixed or if I needed to just buy a new one. Luckily i ran across this little gem and rushed over to drop my sweater off. Just FYI the place you drop and pick up your sweater has little to do with this business. It is simply a drop and pick up location. You leave your sweater and info with the people at this place and once fixed they contact and drop off for you. When I got my cashmere sweater back it looked as good as new. Whew! Thanks so much for helping me with this. It is good to know this place exists for future reference. Thanks for reading and enjoy.

I had a burn hole in this beautiful cashmere poncho of mine. I wasn’t sure where to take a sweater with that type of problem to get fixed, but I got an email from Gilt City that had a voucher for Alterknit, which I bought because I thought it’d be perfect for this type of repair (I had never previously heard of Alterknit).
I did have to pay a little extra on top of my voucher for the repair, but they were really nice and courteous and worked with me. The best part is that you can not even TELL that the sweater ever had a hole in it. Seriously, I’ve studied it. It is like BRAND NEW. It’s thrilling. I’d definitely bring my stuff back here if I ever need any beautiful knits fixed. Thank you everyone at Alterknit!!!

Mimi is amazing! I brought in a brand new sweater that was seriously way too large (bought sight unseen was about to despair given the raw seems, rolled sleeves – and doubted Alter Knit could remedy. but they did a great job – the sweater fits wonderfully – it took awhile, but totally worth the time and the trek! It did take 3 weeks to get a final price and to get my stuff back, but the work was high quality.

My experience with Alter Knit was absolutely horrible. I first found Alter Knit through a random Google search for my employer. My employer had a Gucci blouse that had a few pulls in the fabric and she wanted it repaired. The woman I was first contacted by, which was only after I had to send an email to do so, spoke a good game. saying how each garment is treated with extra special care and are repaired by hand. Even though their pricing seemed a little vague, I decided to go with their company. My employer is an extreme perfectionist, and I felt confident that AlterKnit would deliver. After the garment was picked up, all communication ended. I sent countless emails and called and left many voicemails. None of which were returned until two months later!!! Finally after two months, I received an email stating that she had been trying to contact me via email for a while and the emails must not have gone through. Which of course is bulls@!t. ugh smh The woman told me that it took so long because they had to order special thread for the blouse to repair it. She also added that there were several other snags that she had to repair, including one that she claimed was so bad that she would not touch it. Funny because I didn’t notice any of these mystery pulls before the blouse was picked up.
So finally today, 6÷24÷13, is the long awaited day of return for the blouse. I was expecting the thing to look brand freaking new considering the amount of time AlterKnit had it and the price was triple than originally expected! Well, I can say for sure that the blouse does not look brand new. It doesn’t even look like its been repaired at all. There are now more mystery pulls and tears in the fabric that were most definitely not there before, and the places were they did attempt to «repair» it, are amateur at best. I would not recommend using them. It is not worth it!!!
