Great relaxing area for the dogs to roam until we find a nice shady spot to toss a throw down and enjoy this beautiful area. Just far enough out of the city to feel like we’re not even in New Orleans anymore. Love the open park concept that welcomes dogs and just as much a pleasure for them as it is for us to spend time here.

This is a great place to bring your pup during the summer because of the little swimming whole tucked behind the woods. I’ve taken my dog there twice this week and she loves it. Here are some specifics: 1) The levee has a paved walking path that is up the hill from the railroad tracks. You and your dog can walk north(that means go right!) on the path and this will lead you to a nice walkway through the woods that will lead you to the swimming hole. 2) If your dog is a flight risk, the levee is not for you. The walking path and swimming hole are far enough away from the road and tracks that it isn’t a problem for a lot of dogs, but it is definitely not fenced in or anything, and trains are frequent enough to make you want to leash your dog regardless. 3) The swimming hole is basically a muddy bank of the river, so bring a towel and some clean water for your pup to drink for when they get back in the car. I always hose my dog off at home. 4) As always, watch out for other people’s dogs. There was a dog that kept trying to push my pup underwater, and of course his owner did nothing. I had to play dog-whisperer to get him to leave her alone.

Pros: if you have a big dog that needs exercise, theyll have a blast tearing up and down the levee Cons: not fenced in, noone picks up after your dog, hardly ever mowed. I dont think this is a sanctioned dog park, just a place people started going and it showed up on Unilocal. There’s a fenced-in park a little further up Leake where folks take their dogs. Better idea if your dog isnt good off leash

Every doggie loves some fun romping with other pups, right?(If your dog doesn’t resemble this remark, this isn’t the place for him or her.) Sienna loved running on the levee(pre-arthritis & orthopedic problems) and she loved romping with the other dogs. This is where to go if your dog wants to play in the moshpit, if your dog gets scared or aggressive, please stay home.

This was my first try at taking my two dogs to a dog park here in New Orleans. It was a decent experience. Both of my dogs are pretty obedient, but one has a bad case of ADD and its really hard to keep his attention, especially with a lot of people/dogs around. The lack of a fence, close proximity to the road, and railroad tracks make this a little dangerous for untrained dogs. The dogs ended up having a great time here, but I felt like I was on the edge of my seat due to the lack of security. PS — Bring poop bags because it seems like a lot of people do not. I had to cleans the dogs and my shoes when I got home!

LOVE bringing my dogs here! I try to come a few times a week. This is good«dog park» for well behaved dogs only. No fence and it is close to lots of river road traffic and the railroad track, so if you dog doesn’t have good recall then it probably isn’t the best place for you. Me and my dogs love this place. Great place to walk and let the dogs run and socialize. Also you can walk down by the Mississippi river and let the dogs run around in the bushes and scare up birds and squirrels. Best place to let your dog be a dog in NOLA. Just be aware if you go down by the river your dog will most likely get really dirty! Also this isn’t exactly a business… just a fun gathering place for locals and their dogs.

I agree with most of the other Unilocalers but it’s not the safest place to bring a dog. There is a lot going on out there: –random bikes riding by –the occasional train passing through –major NOLA road a tennis balls throw away –whirlpools in the Mississippi River –Pterodactyl dinosaurs flying over head ready to swoop down and grab Fido while he plays Decent place, just watch out.

Just started visiting the dog levee again with one of my dogs after a long hiatus. The weather is beautiful and me and«mommas boy» have put on a few… The grounds are pleasant enough for being a «non pick up after your dog» spot, but then again, there are no waste receptacles, keeping the grounds even cleaner as if there were. I know, weird, for people to take their trash away with them, very reminiscent of National parks. Anyway, we only say one fight(dog) in the past 3 days, which is good. Mo likes to run around in the clover, sniff butts of other dogs, and make friendly with select people. I have been frequenting the dog levee for a decade or so, and I am happy that is it as pleasant as ever.

Just to clear up any confusion for someone looking for the levee, its on Leake Avenue, not Leave, between where it meets Broadway and Magazine.

The Dog Levee is located where Leave Ave.(or river road) meets the beginning of Magazine St., right next to the Audubon park. If you have a dog(s), or are a dog lover this is a great place to come and hang out. It doesnt really exist on any map or have any group that runs it, but it is well known by dog lovers in the area. Just about every weekday afternoon and especially weekend afternoons, you will find many people with their dogs running free. Its one of the only places, if not the only place, in the city you can let your dog off his leash and let him run free to play with other dogs and people. No one bothers anyone there, and its a great place to socialize and meet other dog lovers as well as let your dog socialize and meet other dogs. Parking is readily available in front of the apartment complexes along the railroad tracks. Go there and have a great time
