New Orleans has many better choices for po-boy sandwiches. Went there a few weeks ago for husband’s roast beef po-boy, and I ordered the Peacemaker, a sandwich with an interesting back history and one of trendy Mahony’s «specialties.» Place was full of Magazine Street visitors, and we were seated and ordered food — the waitress was clearly confused on the Peacemaker concept — told me it was either oysters OR shrimp, whereas a Peacemaker is always both! it took them over an hour to get our food, as the place emptied and new diners arrived and were served. My Peacemaker arrived, oysters only, no french fries«they don’t come with THIS sandwich.» I didn’t complain — my husband was pretty happy with his roast beef, no sense in rolling our lunch farther downhill! Afterward, we agreed about the Peacemaker sandwich, and decided that Mahony’s is overpriced and inconsistent. Besides, the well-loved hangout Parasol’s is just a few blocks away — famous for their great inexpensive po-boys and neighborhood ambience.

I don’t understand the hype. The first time I went, I got two poboys and fried pickles. Nothing real special about the sandwiches, and the pickles were soggy and just plain gross. I chalked it up to the fact I got them to go. I just finished a meal, and still the fried pickles were soggy and gross. I’ve never experienced a bad fried pickle in the city except at this spot. I got a meatball poboy, which, to be fair is hard to screw up, so that was pretty delicious. Customer service is great, but honestly, there’s way better poboys and fried pickles down the street at Tracy’s and Parasol’s. Probably won’t ever go back even though it’s so close to work.

I was visting Nola from NYC for a weekend trip and stopped here for lunch. My boyfriend and I researched a lot of po boy places but ultimately picked Mahony’s since it was closest to where we were walking around. We both got shrimp po boys and enjoyed them enough. The bread ruined the sandwich though… maybe it started out as good bread(it’s supposed to be famous bread from an old German bakery in Nola) but it was toasted SO much it was very dry and crumbly. The shrimp itself was tasty and seasoned nicely. If only the bread were better I’d give their po boys 5 stars! For sides we got onion rings and fried green tomatoes. Both were good! Service was great, very friendly and attentive server. I wish we had more Southern hospitality in New York!

**May as well have eaten a few packets of salt.** I went here because it was near my hotel. Typical tourist mistake. I walked about ¼ mile down the road to this little spot. Cute décor, bar, nice vibe. LOCATION. Cute!!! Nice outdoor patio, looking over Magazine St. Indoors, there are tables and a bar. Comfy feel… I have no complaints about the way the resto was laid out. Quaint, homey, and comfortable. SERVICE. When I asked my server whether to get the Roast Beef or the Short Rib Po’Boy, surprise, he suggested the more expensive of the two. Go figure. I waited a full 15 minutes for the goddamn sandwich. The place was NOT slammed. I don’t understand why braised meat took SO long to get to the window. I won’t even begin to give my opinion about why this took so long. Everyone says that things move slower in the South, but cooks shouldn’t move slowly in ANY city… Especially an epic city like New Orleans. Shameful. FOOD. The Short Rib Po’Boy($ 13 for a HALF sandwich). It had braised short rib, arugula, tomato, fried onion strings, and aioli. It smelled EPIC!!! When I took a bite, my tongue immediately felt the burn of salt. I kid you not, I suffered a salt burn from their over-reduced short rib. I know how shorty’s are kept during service, so I KNOW that these«cooks» weren’t adding water to the ever-reducing short ribs. The result… A disgustingly unpalatable short rib sandwich. I took two or three bites, and ended up repurposing the sandwich contents. Most of it went into the garbage, and the meat went into a bowl of ramen and nori, that I cooked up on a camping stove.((I’m on a road trip, so it’s all I could do.)) I’d have added an egg, if I had one. OVERALL. This place sucked. It basically taught me a very important lesson: Not everyone in NOLA can make a decent po’boy, and these people certainly don’t care enough to maintain high standards. Garbage. If it wasn’t a million degrees outside, I’d have returned it and ripped the kitchen staff some new assholes. Disgusting slop that I wouldn’t feed to a Guantanamo prisoner. If you’re gonna be lazy and careless, just close your doors, buy some weed, and watch COPs all day, in a trailer. Garbage. Thanks for totally ruining my FIRST po’boy in NOLA… I never bought another one while I was in town, because your sandwich was SO bad. You represented your city, and you totally sucked. Your timing, your service, and your cooks were all a VERY poor reflection of your city.

I don’t think I could say enough good things about Mahony’s. We went fairly late on a weekday evening with friends. The atmosphere was nice, and the service was fantastic! Our waitress was friendly, helpful, and quick with a drink refill. The Po-Boys were delicious and the real star of the show. I got the Peacemaker with half fried oysters and half fried jumbo shrimp, dressed(are there people who don’t get them dressed? I don’t know any!) I got a full sandwich but only finished about half of it. The leftovers were great the next day, but I could easily have done with the smaller size, especially if I hadn’t been heading back to a fridge. The shrimp were indeed jumbo and very good, but for me the oysters were the best. The breading was crispy and flavorful but didn’t overwhelm. I’m drooling just thinking about those oysters! My husband got the Short Rib Po-Boy. He loved it! The combo of short rib, skinny onion rings, and arugula was amazing. Our friends also shared an order of Pig Fries, and though I was too full, everyone else at the table raved about them. Great food, fair prices, fantastic service!

We ALWAYS have a great Po-Boy at this place. I’ve lost track of the Yummy choices. This is a true Po-Boy experience. Great beer to go with the sandwich and just a good amount of conversation in the air. Indoor & outdoor seating are both great. Brooke alwys comes by to make sure that our meal is perfect. I highly recommend this joint!

I’m always craving a fried oyster poboy when I come here, and they definitely deliver. I’m no expert on poboys, but the ones I’ve had here are delicious. Outdoor seating is also in a nice location on Magazine street, and they allow dogs on it.

This was our first stop on our po boy extravaganza. Mahoney’s is an older neighborhood establishment. You pick up on the local feel as soon as you walk in the door. The ambiance is rather chill and laid back. Nothing frilly or fancy here. Each table is adorned with Crystal and Tabasco, your choice for your po boy. The menu boasts po boys galore. I kept it simple with a classic fried shrimp po boy, my hubby took a chance on the alligator sausage po boy. They were decent… I was sensing the need for more flavor when I tried each. Maybe we needed to add more hot sauce? Maybe a tad more salt? Maybe some more mayo or pickles? Not sure. They were just alright. I think I wanted more of a tang, if that makes any sense. So while my hunger was satisfied, my appetite was left wanting more.

One of the best poboy I’ve ever had was from here and the service was good as well. Ordered a combo shrimp, crawfish and oysters poboy and they use these crunchy but soft in the inside leidenheimer bread. Mmmmm.

Pimento Poboy was delicious. It had very thick cut friend green tomatoes and bacon. The Pig fries were so, so, so good. Fries top with pulled pork, fried onions, bbq sauce, and cheddar cheese. Enjoyed the meal!

My first poboy… I’ll remember it forever because it only lasted 5 seconds… I got a friend shrimp poboy with fried green tomatoes and an order of fried pickles. The portions were pretty generous for both, bordering on insane for the pickles. Overall very good meal but based on the next several poboy joints I tried I can only give this place 4 stars. Service was great though and definitely recommend this place if you’re in the area looking for a poboy.

Friendly energetic service! We had Kelly as our waitress and she was amazing. Always had a smile on her face and was helpful with information about the Garden District. The Fried pickles were delicious and came with a dipping sauce that was astronomical! We also each enjoyed a great shrimp Po Boy… plenty of shrimp and a great dressed up sandwich. The restaurant is set in the middle of the Garden District and is a great place to escape the noisy/hustle and bustle of the city area. We sat outside and the weather was a perfect place to sit and enjoy a nice early dinner! We will definitely visit again on our next trip to NOLA!!!

My boyfriend and I had a positive experience at Mahoney’s. We ordered two poboys and shared them: fried shrimp and the short rib. Both were tasty, but we noticed the regular size was much smaller and more expensive than the other places nearby to get a po boy. The waitress was so nice and helped us figure out which po boys we wanted to order. It is very clean in there with lots of seating. Good beer selection. We also had fried green tomatoes which were yummy! Based off of the food alone, I’d recommend it if you’re in the area but it’s not a must.

This is a great spot to grab a po’boy or some fried seafood. Really, a great spot for anything fried. I’ve had the spicy catfish and the eggplant Parmesan. They are both good, but the spicy catfish is the best. I highly recommend the onion rings. They are the thin onion straw kind and they are perfectly salty and delicious. If they are busy the food can be a long wait, but our waitress was very nice and gave us an complimentary order of onion rings after I mentioned how much I love them to make up for the wait. The good service is really what pushes the place from 4 stars to 5 stars.

Truly local fare; and true creole food. Spicy is spicy, and the shrimp don’t come de-veined. My server was amazing! I had the red beans and rice lunch special with tea(true southern sweet tea). the beans and rice were super spicy, she offered to get me something else, but I declined. They did add extra rice to the dish for me though to help with the heat. All of the staff were very friendly and nice, will certainly eat here again!

Five stars for the staff alone, but the food was delicious too! We stopped in after wandering around, avoiding a parade. They were slow, with a guy at the bar that appeared to be a local and appeared to be an annoying regular. More on that later. We had the shrimp po boy and the alligator po boy, and drinks, a margarita and the $ 5 rum punch special. Delicious. The margarita was much stronger than the rum punch! The food was perfect, with the side of onion rings/strings being the best part. The real enjoyment came from watching the staff navigate dealing with the annoying patron at the bar. They knew him by name, and I gathered that he didn’t tip well and didn’t order much more than a water, and would sit there for hours and chatter away. The staff had us in tears, we were laughing so hard, as they talked to and joked with and at the expense of this guy. They stayed professional but were funny as hell. Multiple times, someone would offer the lingering customer a drink«TOGO!» and he wouldn’t catch the drift, even with my table giggling like a couple of school kids. We enjoyed feeling like old friends with the staff. We enjoyed the food. Highly recommended… just leave a tip and don’t stay all day, okay?

We wanted to love Mahony’s. We really, really did! It was on our list of places to visit during our trip to NOLA. We planned our visit for yesterday and Über’d over. We were promptly seated and our excitement ended there. Our waiter found us to take our order and the downhill slide began. We were disappointed that alligator in any form wasn’t an option, although he didn’t seem too knowledgeable about the menu. Once that was done, we didn’t see him again for another 30 minutes. Hello??? The place isn’t that big. The gumbo appetizer, which tasted like very thin red bean and rice gravy(and not very tasty) came out with our po boys so there was nothing to do but look at the other diners also NOT being served. There was no food coming out of this kitchen. When the waiter finally made his way back, he told us there were 5 orders in front of us. Clearly no one was eating. The jumbo shrimp po boy was decent and seeing the Garden District was nice, but honestly we had just as good or better at the little dive we stopped in around the corner from our hotel in the French Quarter. Quite frankly, we could have skipped this part of our trip. The service was so poor the meal couldn’t make up for it!

What to say about Mahonys that hasn’t already been heard. This small, iconic po’boy shop is consistently voted in with the top po’boys in the city. Walking toward the restaurant on Magazine Street, the smells reach you before you reach it. Outdoor seating probably has a bit to do with the delectable wafting of mostly gravy scents. The bread is great, the vibe is great, they serve beer –which is great. Tried the catfish and the sausage po’boys(dressed of course) with lots of beer and hot sauce. Very solid sandwiches. Very nice staff too.

good service + large menu = great place to bring out of towners if you can get there before the crowd We were able to eat outside on Christmas eve. The food pleased the seafood eaters and there were vegetarian options for the rest of us. Enjoyed our food and service and we will be back when we have visitors!

Currently sitting in Mahoney’s about to leave. Walked in and the dude says to me we can’t sit you yet. Plenty of seats available so I ask why not, and tells me they’re just incredibly understaffed so we’ll have to wait. Ok. That’s fine but when tables get up and leave and you make me wait twenty minutes without acknowledging the wait, you can suck it. Should have known when Guy Fieri endorsed this place it would be crap.

Admittingly, a food network show brought me here. I wanted a great Po Boy and to check out the Garden District so it worked out. I got an oyster po boy and it’s probably one of the I’ve ever had. It’s simple and no fuss with plump oysters and great bread, just a good example of a delicious sandwich.

The staff was wonderful and they’re quick to give suggestions and filling up your water glass: D As far as the food: everything was decent, besides the gumbo. If you’re expecting a seafood gumbo then don’t order this one. The po boy sandwiches were good — nothing extraordinary though. Now the downside is that the prices were sort of steep for what you got. The prices of the seafood po boys were up there but not so much the quality. It was nice to try out on my vacation in NOLA, however I would probably try a different place next time around.

Was in New Orleans and decided to grab po boys with a friend. I was not disappointed! The staff was awesome and friendly, and the po boys were huge! We had the following: — Shrimp Remi — Fried jumbo gulf shrimp, fried green tomatoes, remoulade dressing, and green onions — delicious and light! It was heavenly, every single bite! — Short Rib — Abita braised short ribs, fried onion rings, garlic mayonnaise, arugula, tomato — this po boy had too much going on, the braised short ribs was delicious, but I enjoyed a more simpler po boy, like the Shrimp Remi — Loaded Fries — House Cut Kennebec Potatoes, Cheddar Cheese, Roast Beef Debris Gravy — could not stop eating this delicious fries, the debris gravy was delicious! — Thin Cut Onion Rings — thin cut, easy to eat, delicious and very addicting! I could not stop eating this! Definitely a choice when in the mood for po boys!

A delicious, homey sandwich shop and restaurant well worth the travel from the French Quarter. Thanks to Unilocal for helping me find it because it was fresh, hot and delicious. I ordered a small shrimp po boy($ 10) with fries($ 2.50) and a side of gravy($ 2). The fried shrimp were crispy and juicy. The produce was fresh and I requested my sandwich to be topped with jalapeños. The gravy was runny and the fries were cold. I’d skip them next time. It didn’t matter because the sandwich was the star. I gobbled every morsel. Pete ordered a large pulled pork po’ boy with onion straws. This was waaaay too much food. I would definitely recommend getting the small, it’s more than enough for for the average person. Or, get one large and share it. The side of fried chicken was the juiciest, crispest chicken I’d ever had in my life. The service was warm, waters were refilled promptly. The bathrooms were clean. It was a really good experience and I highly recommend Mahoney’s.

Ok! So the first thing that you’ll notice about this place outside of the absolute darling location is they play REALLY good music! It’s like being in your favorite 80’movie! OKAY let’s get to the food! Everything I ate was good! Oyster PoBoy… Out of this WORLD! I couldn’t even taste the oyster really. Everything just goes together so well its Ile one ingredient. Fried Chicken Livers… Didn’t think I’d like them to be honest but boy did I!!! The sauce that comes with them is so tasty! I didn’t even need hot sauce! Fried Pickles… So light, fluffy and crispy all at the same time. Just excellent. I really enjoyed this place! I know you will too. They have great service so your in good hands! #IwillBeBack

Heard the hype about this place and there peace maker po boy and had to stop by on my visit while I was down in Nola. I got to say the fried oysters in the peach maker was fried to perfection, nice crisp and nice flavor. They offer there po boys in 2 sizes. I got the large and it was pretty pricey for a sandwich. Although it was pricey is have to say there service is amazing! Such a friendly and great staff they were all genuinely nice people and engage I. There customers and I can really appreciate that. This place is a must visit where you have to try it once cause I don’t think i would honestly pay around 20 dollars for a po boy sandwich.

Ugh. I really don’t want to write this. I used to love Mahony’s. I came all the time, I chatted with the owners, I wrote numerous high reviews. Even defended the place on a Talk board a few years back. Sadly, the place changed owners sometime after 2012, and it just isn’t what it once was. I went back shortly after moving back to the city and ordered one of my tried and true favorites, a jumbo grilled shrimp with fried green tomatoes and remoulade. Everyone knows that Mahony’s charges a premium for their seafood po-boys, but in the past they used true jumbo shrimp which justified the extra few dollars. Now the shrimp are small and they taste rather unremarkable. The price, however, is still far above the norm for seafood poboys. The onion rings, thankfully, haven’t changed. One other major loss was that their bleu cheese dressing was absolutely incredible. If you’re crazy about bleu cheese like I am you can appreciate a good bleu cheese and how rare they are. When Ben Wicks owned the place it was made in house, but whatever they served me was really disappointing and tasted store bought. Mahony’s was one of my absolute favorites in the city; it’s really disappointing that they didn’t keep up the standards with the ownership change.

Stopped in after seeing it on Triple D for the Peace Maker PoBoy. We started out with a strawberry beer, wow, this thing was so refreshing, a great summer beer. The Peace Maker did not disappoint, it was so flavorful and delicious. I ordered a cup of gumbo to go with my half PoBoy and OMG it was the darkest rue I have ever seen and packed so much flavor that I could of just ate that. Because I did not fully read the menu we also ordered the Pig Fries… WOW I had no idea that it was HUGE. We are a few bites there but with all of the other things it was just too much. We decided to take it home with us and eat later. We reheated it in the oven the next day and OMG it was so delicious, even the fries held up! If you are in New Orleans you have to make this stop.

This was my first time here. I went with my best friend and I had a great time. We went peak lunch hour and the wait wasn’t that bad. She came first and got us a table. Surprisingly for lent season, we didn’t have to wait that long for a table. The fried onion rings are delicious. Tiny sliced onions, fried and packed with flavor. I got the jumbo shrimp poboy. It was okay at best. The thing I hated the most was the the bread was the chewy bread. Not the typical toasty yet soft bread that I am used to.(Like at Crabby Jacks or Cajun Persuasion) I wasn’t too impressed, but I’d still like to come back and try the meat poboys, many have raved about those.

We heard this was the place in NOLA to get the best po-boy. We got the peacemaker and roast beef 9 inch po-boys and fried green tomato. It did not disappoint. Those expecting more than just a sandwich may be disappointed. The bread was fresh but not the best I’ve had on a po-boy. Salvo’s has a good break for po-boys. The fried green tomatoes was okay. You have to eat it with the«thousand island-like» sauce. Overall, great place to grab a sandwhich if you’re on Magazine street.

Where’s the beef. Just charge me an extra dollar and put some meat in that sandwich. The fries were literally crumbs. So why three stars? Because when the bartender saw it, she brought me some longer cut fries. The bread was actually very good. Put some more meat in there and double check the fries before serving it. It’ll be a solid four stars. I’ll come back and try other stuff because the staff was so friendly. Plus the 80’s music is totally awesome.
