There are exactly two galleries on Royal that stand out AT ALL in my mind (from the heaps upon heaps of generic paintings of crooked houses and musicians and fleur de lis, that is): Graphite and the gallery almost directly across the street with the most amazing quilts and wood etchings.
Graphite’s art comes from local artists and from artists in Big Cities To The North, it is made up of underwater photographic prints and of the funniest sculptures and truly stunning large canvases of robots cradling soldiers from the Napoleonic Wars. The art is unique and interesting and stimulating, and it is never trite.
The gallery openings, I believe, are now on the last Saturday of every month.

A small, but great gallery on Royal with gorgeous art.
On the third Saturday of every month they have an «open house» with wine and mingling.
