I had never sampled West African food before, but on the suggestion of a food tour, I brought my family here for a Thursday night dinner. Loved how cozy the restaurant was, and they seated our group of 4 adults and a 1 year old at their largest table by the front window. Felt like we were having dinner in someone’s living room! The portions are LARGE, so definitely share! We asked for popular recs and the waitress did a great job helping us order. Solid food and great service.

We ate here twice on our last trip. I’m vegan so there were a ton of options. OMG. Sooo delicious. I had the sautéed spinach with plantains. I wish I could have brought the flavors home.

This place has a good array of vegetarian options which I liked. The portions sizes are also stupid large so I guess that’s good too, you can take leftovers. It’s a small space though so if you have a big party call ahead and reserve some tables. The rice was kinda plain for«coconut rice», but the plantains here were great. I wish instead of so much rice and spinach, I was given more plantains though. Minus one star for the service though, even though it wasn’t really busy, our server was incredibly slow. They also don’t take American Express here.

This restaurant is so good I have dreamed about it coming to New York, there is not one west African spot in Harlem that matches the flavor and consistency of this place. the sauce, the fish pie, the black eyed pea fritter, the okra stew, everything I still remember and when I fly to Florida will spend some time convincing my family to drive over just for a meal! Thank you for everything and I hope you stay in business for generations with great flavor. Authentic west African flavors!

A must try restaurant in NoLa! Beautifully small and awesome food. A treat for vegetarians in NoLa. I tried Kone Ni Makondo, black eyed peas with fried plantain, no. 42. It was delicious. I could have loved plantain to be a bit more sweeter but it works. Enjoyed the flavorful curry! We also ordered Black-eyed pea fritters and it was delicious. Service was friendly. I could remember the flavors for long time after I ate dinner here.

Highlights: BYOB. Flavorful spices. Genuinely nice waitstaff. First time trying African food and was pleasantly surprised! I have nothing to compare it to really, but overall a nice meal. The staff was great, very helpful in terms of explaining items on the menu. I couldn’t tell you the names of anything we ordered, but I can explain, lol. We started with the black-eyed pea fritters and a cup of gumbo for appetizers. Both were decent, although I wasn’t a fan of the slight sliminess of the gumbo(maybe the okra gave it that texture?). I still ate it though! The flavors were great! Dinner was the star of the show for me. My husband and I shared a dish of shrimp and potatoes over a bed of rice. It was very spicy(thanks cayenne pepper!), but really really REALLY yummy. Nice-sized portion too. My one serious complaint is the outdoor bathrooms. You have to exit the restaurant(through the kitchen) to the back in order to use the restrooms. Normally I wouldn’t mind, but it was a little scary at night, particularly because they were so dimly lit and a bit dingy. Never know who’s lurking back there either!

SUPERGOOD! I’m not one to venture too much with new cuisines but I had heard about this place and thought it would be a good time to try something new. The server was very nice and helpful. I went with a group of friends and were able to sit in the window seating in the front. Good spot to sit. The restaurant is small so it seems like this would be the best spot for a group of people. The food was flavorful and delicious. Plates are easy to share as well. Definitely will be going back.

At a first glimpse, my meal seemed quite simple. Actually, it was. But the flavors are magnificent. It was quite impressive upon tasting it. The portion was quite big as well. The price is… Not cheap, but definitely fair considering the location(I’m sure there’s a hefty rent to pay for this location). I didn’t leave a spec on my plate. So perhaps I’m even understating the flavors of this simple meal. Perfect blend of spices for my liking. But this place can’t get 5 stars from me because, blatantly, the service is slow and not too welcoming. I’d probably just order take out if I craved this food again

Nice little place for a quick lunch — southern with an African touch to the food. Quite good, but not tasty enough to try twice. Jambalaya for lunch was a lot of rice and very little meat. I noticed the menu for dinner is the same, prices just higher, so if you want to try stuff, go for lunch.

I came here with my partner on a recent date. We actually came here on our first date more than a year and a half ago, but we decided to come back because neither of us could remember what the food tastes like. From our food experience the other night, it looks like there was a reason for that. I thought it was because I was just so nervous. I ordered a lamb dish, and it was very bland, from the sauce to the couscous. They were out of the drink I ordered. Service was okay, and the food seemed fresh and healthy. Just not in love with it even after giving it a second chance.

OMG this place is GOOD. Offers food inspired by Gambian and Cameroonian cuisines that is sure is satisfy omnis, vegetarians, and vegans! I went with a group of people with pretty diverse tastes: one vegetarian, one vegan, one person who doesn’t like anything with too much grease, oil, or fat, etc. Everyone found something they loved. AMAZING. Don’t miss it! African food is really amazing — I wish it was easier to find! Especially African food that is this good and authentic!

I was in town visiting family. We stopped in for lunch on their recommendation while strolling the French Quarter. It’s a nice out of the way spot. Not crowded and no tourists which was a relief. I’m a sucker for fried platains so having plenty of those on the menu was a huge plus! The food was good — I opted for a chicken leg lunch special with greens and rice. Perhaps I would have been impressed by a more uniquely authentic dish. Service was kind of slow but we weren’t in a rush. There some some confusion over our bill that took time to sort out. If I lived in the neighborhood I’d probably stop by for comfort food but I can’t see going out of my way if I wasn’t already in the area.

I came here 7 years ago and it left such an impression I came back this time around. Spicy and refereshing ginger drinks and quite possibly the best spinach I’ve ever had coupled with quite possibly the best fried plantains I’ve ever had. Huge portions, delicious food, intimate place, lovely servers, and surreal African music videos on the television. An easy staple on a hot or cool day.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy side of Bourbon street lies Bennachin Restaurant, an African restaurant with amazing food and prices. If you are looking for a unique experience while visiting New Orleans, you should definitely give them a visit. I have been wanting to try Ethiopian food, but could never find an African restaurant from any country in South Florida. Bennachin focuses on cuisine from Gambia and Cameroon, catering heavily to vegan and vegetarian diners as well as meat eaters. The interior has an intimate, homey and inviting atmosphere that put us at ease immediately. The staff were so friendly and all of the guests were also helpful when it came time to order. The menu was foreign to us, but we asked guests around us what they were eating and chose items that looked good. I ordered Akara(black-eyed pea fritters, $ 4.50VEGAN), Kone ni Makondo(Black-eyed peas in onion and tomato stew served with coconut rice and fried ripe plantains, $ 13.95VEGAN) and Makondo Yogurt(fried plantains with yogurt sauce, $ 5.00VEG/DAIRY). The portion sizes are enormous here and I really didn’t need any appetizer or dessert, but I was so intrigued by everything I wanted to try as much as I could. Unfortunately we only learned of their famous Jama-Jama(sautéed spinach, $ 4.50VEGAN) after ordering, which is a hit at the annual Jazz and Heritage Festival. When I am in New Orleans again, I will definitely go back and order it. The restaurant has been a staple of New Orleans since 1992 yet many tourists don’t get to experience it, even though it is well within walking distance of the tourist area. Located at 1212 Royal Street, it is only one block off of Bourbon Street and less than a mile from Canal Street.
