I read about Swans Island in Yankee Magazine in an article that covered heirloom-quality crafts being made in New England. Their site( ) is a good indicator of the extraordinary quality and attention to detail in everything they do. I ordered a scarf, at $ 160, and it’s as soft as cashmere thanks to the fact that Swans Island uses only organic soap to wash their wool. The scarf arrived in a gorgeous box with a catalog that looks more like a fine arts exhibit program. The blankets are expensive, about $ 600 to $ 1000 as far as I can tell, but they conform to every facet of the idea of an heirloom: something of high quality that you treasure and eventually pass down. It’s wonderful to see world-class working being done in Maine.

Somewhat pricey, very well crafted and loomed(?) wool blankets. I have three: two winter and one summer. They keep me very warm in the winter, and just the right temperature during the summer. And more importantly, they have very little itch factor going on. It’s a neat little fabric house and store. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. Atlantic Hwy is the same as US1.
