My family went to Fieldcrest for Thanksgiving dinner this year. My in-laws who were there with us had been there for Sunday brunch previously but it was the first visit for my wife, son and I. First of all, I need to say that the food was good. In addition to the expected Turkey Day trimmings, they snuck in a few curve balls like sausage and peppers and Swedish meatballs. My only criticism of the food was that it was a tad salty, but I tend to dig that anyway. Here’s what I didn’t understand: Ok, so I get the place is an historic inn, etc and the meal was served in the Lodge, but it honestly felt like a band of traveling carneys rented this«Lodge» for the holiday and sold dinner in it. It felt out of place. There were things that I would have thought more permanent that seemed temporary — card tables(it seemed). The seating process was also awkward: a guy leads us from the buffet area(doubled as the foyer) down a hallway(cashier, bartender and coffee stand) to another room, where he seemingly forgot what he was doing and stopped to socialize with a woman wearing a giant doily. Then there was our waitress that was overly boisterous and maybe a bit crass. She introduced the place to us by plugging the Sunday brunch while bending at the knees, leaning back, and pawing at herself. She also provided sweetener for our beverages from her pocket. None of this was too over the top had it been a run of the mill dinner somewhere, but the occasion, I felt, called for a little more composure. In any event, I’m intrigued by this place and will likely return to sample the Sunday Brunch and see if it flows a bit better.
