I found this gym online and through their site I selected a boxing trainer(named Toyo), based on his credentials. He apparently was a former Cuban olympian. I signed up with him, and it turned out to be a big mistake. I quickly realized this particular trainer was arrogant, unprofessional and lazy.
People sign up with a trainer in order for them to help improve skills or techniques and in order to do that, a trainer needs to actually instruct a client consistently during a session. During a one hour session, I can sincerely say that I recieved an average of about 7 – 10 minutes of instruction from him and this was during the two rounds of padwork we did. In between the rounds of padwork, he would say nothing, stare at the front desk/door, no instructions whatsoever. After padwork, I was instructed to do bag work for numerous rounds while he either stared at Facebook on his phone, text messaged, took personal phonecalls from friends, walked off to talk to the front desk girls, gossip with other trainers, sat in another room, and even listen to music through earphones while dancing around in the mirror — all while I was doing rounds on the bag or jumping rope. When he instructed me to do a rounds of shadowboxing, he would stare off at the front desk or walk away. Every so often he would give some instructions while walking by, or sit for a few minutes and make corrections, but this was rare. He frequently talked badly about other trainers and their clients, saying they did not know what they were doing, yet the other trainers actually seemed focused on their clients.
Understandably, at times he had to instruct other clients if they showed up during the same time I did, but that was rare because I would come at a time when the gym was nearly empty, specifically so that I might get better training. After a very short while I observed that he was ignoring them as well. He also cancelled several times while I was ONMYWAY to the gym(I lived 25 min away) and I had to turn around and go back home. When I adressed this with him he became irate and began yelling. He basically did not care, kept cutting me off, and told me to find another trainer. He said he can’t always be focused on me because he had other clients. I pointed out that this was primarily during times when he wasn’t training other people, but that made no difference. I finally asked for my money back and he defiantly challenged me to speak to the owner which I did. The owner was apologetic, concerned, professional, and refunded me the full amount.
This is in no way a reflection of all the trainers there. This is only a reflection on Toyo. Apparently he doesn’t understand the need to develop a good reputation based on professionalism. Otherwise, the gym is nice, clean, and has decent equipment and good boxers. Just be careful who you sign up with.
