I tried Sake out for the first time the other day, and this may be the one Norfolk sushi spot which I may frequent. Their interior was pretty, the service was pretty good, I enjoyed their food and it seemed their fish was fresh. That’s really all you can ask for with a sushi restaurant. First of all, keep in mind I was the only person in there so it’s typically easy to provide good service. A party of two came in about 15 – 20 minutes later but the server was more than competent enough to take care of three people. Based on what I witnessed there were 3 employees working — a server, who was very pleasant; a line cook who was in the kitchen; and the sushi chef. I sat at the sushi bar and planned to order just a couple of rolls. Sake, though, offered a special which I decided to take advantage of — order 3 specialty rolls and receive a Volcano roll for free. Pretty good deal if you ask me, but keep in mind the specialty rolls vary in price(between $ 10-$ 15), and since sushi is usually expensive you can run up a hefty tab if you don’t pay attention. My server was quick and attentive and always made sure to refill my hot tea. So no complaints from that perspective. The sushi chef worked quickly — once he heard the order he was cutting up fish, pulling out the seaweed wrap and prepping to roll everything up(one of the many advantages of sitting at the sushi bar). I waited maybe 10 – 15 minutes for my food to arrive, so another plus. Because their fish is fresh the rolls I had were delicious. The three rolls I ordered were California Dynamite(very pretty and a little spicy), Spicy Red Dragon(definitely a little spicy) and the Ginza roll. All four were fantastic and filled me up… another check. When I was ready to pay my server gave me my bill and she took care of my payment quickly. Overall a good experience — I just have to see what it’s like when they’re busy. For years I’ve been unimpressed with Norfolk sushi spots. I think Sake may be the exception — as long as they’re as consistent as this first visit then I’ll return often. Thank you, Sake, for a lovely dining experience. JV

Was a bit worried about a strip mall sushi spot but I stopped out of convenience… and glad I did. Everything is clean and the fish was fresh. The staff was very nice and attentive. Had the spicy shrimp and spicy tuna… fantastic!

In town for a business meeting and was looking for a great sushi restaurant. So glad I stopped in and had the amazing special Christmas Roll, spicy tuna roll with marinated tuna and seaweed salad on top. I also had a perfect Salmon tempura roll. Great clean sophisticated atmosphere and service. I’ll definitely be back!

Food poisoning! I ordered a shrimp tempura and Spiderman roll. Everything tasted fine. Taste was pretty average for the cost, but not the biggest issue. I awoke from sleep 4 – 5 hours later with every classic symptom of food poisoning. After my 8th time throwing up not being able to hold down any fluid, I went off to the hospital and was treated there. $ 20 sushi was not worth the hospital bill or tremendously awful Saturday night. Never again.

Portions could have made this a 3 star review but the tastes and quality were too good. And only one item, my sushi entrée, disappointed on quantity. Guess size does matter. I ordered the garden salad, Sake Oysters and Orange Dragon Roll. The roll was $ 12 and change. Being it was in the house special list, I expected a large roll like all other sushi restaurants. But as mentioned the flavor made up for it. Finally, a quick mention of the two other items. The salad-crisp and cool iceberg, plentiful and bursting with a great Miso Ginger or whatever wonderful dressing they put on it. The oysters? Perfectly battered and fried to a crispy crust with a hearty burst of the flavorful and fresh oyster. Large enough to get 8 bites out of the four. I still don’t remember eating here but it’s déjà vu as they have The Bachelor final episode on! And I’ve only seen the show twice and I’m pretty sure it was here.

We ordered this for takeout the other night. When we walked in to pick up and I noticed the restaurant was nicely decorated. There were two people who working both making sushi and taking orders as well as serving people. I had to compliment all the multi-tasking. I ordered the Hawaiian Roll and the Sake Roll, the Hawaiian was refreshing, it had Mango within it. The Sake Roll was topped with Eel but I was getting overwhelmed with the Eel skin that was still attached. My other friend were happy with all the sushi they ordered, and then we received a complimentary Volcano Roll which personally wasn’t good. I’m glad we didn’t pay for that, but they get an «A» for providing something free. Maybe when I go back and dine in, I will have a more extensive review.

It was delicious! I had the dream roll and the earthquake roll for the lunch box. A perfect amount of food for only 8 bucks! I now have a new favorite lunch spot.

Don’t let the location fool you! Yes, this is a tiny shop in the middle of a strip mall. However, in terms of sushi quality, it is the best in the area. Gluten free soy sauce available. Coupons are available on website if you want to get an even better deal! You won’t regret stopping by.

After coming here several times, it has become my go-to for affordable sushi in Norfolk. Their bento boxes are a bit different than most places(offering more options for entrée and substitutions). Their tempura is nice and crispy, the food comes out quickly, the waitress was attentive and professional, and the sushi was fresh and tasty.

I think this place is ok considering the area. Let’s be real here, if you’re comparing to California or the like you’re apples are mixed with your oranges so just blow it out your miso. The place was dead and that made for a super attentive waiter. Almost creepy, poor guy most have been bored out of his mind. I’ve decided to to rate on a scale of 1 – 10. Service. 9 Atmosphere. 7 Cleanliness. 8 Presentation of food. 8 Quality of sushi 7. Not great but not bad. If you’re not a sushi nazi I think you’ll enjoy it. If you’re a stuck up twat like some of the reviews on this place, keep on trucking.

I eat sushi weekly and Sake is my go to spot. It’s never crowded when I go and they have great specials. Everything that I have ordered is always very fresh. They are using great quality seafood. I actually ordered a cooked roll on my last visit. The crunch roll. It was amazing. You should try all of their special rolls at least once!

I came here with my junior Unilocalers, trying to get out of the heat and get lunch. They wanted fast food but I vetoed that for sushi. I’m glad I did. While the boys weren’t that thrilled with their sushi, they loved the bento boxes. They had chicken teriyaki while I chose chicken katsu. I wanted to order a lot more but couldn’t justify it this go round. I will definitely be back for more! Also fried ice cream = win in our books. The waitress was super friendly and helpful too.

We came here on a business trip after reading all those glowing 4 star reviews. From the outside, it looked promising with the nice Japanese name and glowing sign. Once we get in, the place was dead with just a couple of patrons around. We were greeted by the semi pleasant waitress whom btw was from Hong Kong. That just gave me a red flag right there. We proceeded to order 2 sashimi specials and an assortment of different rolls. The bill comes out to around $ 150 for 3’people. I can hardly call what they serve sushi. I guess one can fool people from Virginia but by LA standards, any $ 19 sashimi that includes cut up piece of imitation crab meat is shameful. All the staff in there were speaking Mandarin including the sushi chef. I had no issues with that if the fish was up to par but unfortunately it wasn’t. I was thoroughly disappointed. Needless to say this will be a one time visit :(

Good place. Seems kind of pricey for me, but I’m accustomed to Chesapeake sushi, which is priced slightly lower than Norfolk it seems. Everything tasted fresh, and the waitress even made a point to tell me that. The one comment that I will make about this place is they should have a cut off time for serving drinks. A friend was served a drink 20 minutes before closing and felt rushed to drink it by their 11pm closing time. Other than that I will return.

Last night I wanted sushi but I didn’t feel like going to the same place two days in a row. I decided to check out Sake again after refusing to go there due to a horrible experience in the past. I’m a very stubborn person, especially when it comes to restaurants and service quality. If I have a bad experience somewhere, I’m most likely not going back. I held off for a good four months, but as I stated before, I decided to give them another try. Boy, am I glad I did! Without further ado, here is my updated review: I entered the restaurant and an older woman with short hair(I wish I knew her name) greeted me from behind the sushi bar. I had already grabbed a menu and was taking a look at it, so she asked how I was doing and if I was ordering carryout. I told her that I was and she told me to let her know when I was ready. After a couple of minutes, she came around and said I could have a seat and offered me a cup of ice water. How sweet! I really appreciated that. As many times as I’ve ordered carryout at sushi restaurants, I’ve never been offered water before. She took my order and put it in, then brought my water out. I ordered the shrimp tempura roll, the Boston roll, and yaki soba. She brought my check and chatted with me a little bit about how cold it was outside. She was very cheerful and never stopped smiling. She really made me feel welcome. My food came out in about ten minutes. The yaki soba was alright. I wouldn’t order it again. To be honest, it looked and tasted like those ramen noodles you get from the grocery store without seasoning. The only thing that saved it was the fact that it had vegetables mixed in. I’ve had better yaki soba at Sakura Sushi on Northampton Boulevard. Also, the Boston roll was good but the shrimp tempura roll was much better. Obviously there isn’t really much to tell here aside from the fact that the woman who helped me was very sweet and I’d definitely go back to try something new. This experience was much better. I’m so glad I decided to give it another try.
