You might think this a place to go to «support a local business» where you will pay a premium for everything and only find half of what you are looking for — if you know what I mean. That was the old Newtown Hardware. Amazingly, the«new» Newtown Hardware manages to nearly always have what I need and the prices are extremely competitive; alwaysless than Ace and frequently on par with Home Depot. I randomly needed an eight foot copper grounding rod and hardware recently, and figured I’d need to make the trip to Home Depot. Nope, within 30 seconds of walking in the door the guy pulled the grounding rod from the basement and gave me various hardware options. Checked later out of curiosity and the total price was maybe $ 2 over Home Depot.

This place is awesome. It’s the hardware store every small town needs. Part history, part nostalgia, part they-simply-have-the-part/do-dad/fitting-you-need, do your kids a favor and shop here before you go to HD or Ace.

I can’t believe I have never put a review up here! Newtown Hardware is a gem, a true classic hardware store according to both my father and father-in-law(who are far more handy than me). Every time I have a home improvement need I try to hit them first. From a very manageable selection of hooks, screws, nails, tape, light switches, etc. to simple seasonal items like firewood bundles, you will most likely find what you need. Plus, the staff are all friendly, helpful and actually KNOWWHATTHEITEMSDO! For anyone who wants to talk about«buying local» or «support your downtown» make a stop here first. Even if you don’t find what you were looking for, the visit is a wonderful, warm bit of nostalgia that will give you the strength you need to brave the aisles of a cold, impersonal mega-hardware store with tons of useless/poorly made crap.

Step into history with a visit to Newtown Hardware House. This impeccably maintained old fashioned hardware store is a museum of Americana in screws, nails, tools, plumbing, electrical supplies, and even Flexible Flyer sleds and snow shovels. The amazing and virtuous Dave C., the owner of the NHH for many years recently sold it to a local family to keep the operation open, so head in to buy the light bulbs and faucets you need for your fix-it projects. Bring your kids so they can experience a slice of America that is almost extinct. While in the area, visit the other shops on State Street to support the community and the businesses that keep Newtown, Newtown.
