Wayward Captain Watersports

Today was my first time ever paddle boarding and I must say it was amazing and I will most definitely be back! The people who work there are so friendly and helpful! The prices are cheaper than other places I was looking in too and you get 2 hours. The area was very big which is nice because boats have a lot of room to go around. Overall I had such a great time and experience and I will be back and bring more friends with me so they can enjoy it as well! Thank you for having such a cool spot with affordable prices! Being a college student I never have money to do fun things like this so it was nice! I highly recommend it!

This place is awesome! I did the 8 person groupon with a bunch of friends. We first were running very late and I tried calling earlier in the day to tel someone we would be late but there is no way of communicating with this company. They never answer phones and apparently listen to voicemails once a week.
When we got there I quickly talked to the guy working and he was awesome! Super nice and friendly and told me there would be no issues at all and we were still allowed our full time. We were so relieved!
Also when we pulled away from the dock it was obvious that our boat wasn’t working so good so he helped us in and got us a nicer bigger Duffy to cruise in. The gentleman working there was extremely nice and very helpful and the whole experience was great and my friends and I all agreed that we will be back soon!

The employees at this place have a great scam going. Parking in the American Junkie lot is listed on their website as being $ 5.00 (in two different places), but they insisted we pay $ 10.00. I showed the guy that parked the car the website, as well as the guy that loaded us into the boat, and they both just kept saying that it was $ 10.00, $ 5.00 was the weekday price, blah blah blah. An extra $ 5 per person adds up to an extra $ 40 for our 8 person boat, which I’m sure just went in their pockets. Like I said, nice scam.

We went out for our first duffy ride this afternoon with our party of 12 and had the best experience. The process was easy and seamless from check-​in to check-​out! Alex was great about informing us all we needed to know before we hit the water! We all had a blast and will definitely be using Wayward for our next duffy ride! So much fun! Highly recommend!

I don’t even know why this place doesn’t have 5 stars already. I’ve lived in Newport beach for 3 years and this is the only place I go to rent! The staff is easygoing but thorough, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and fun. The boards are in good condition, and they’ve always had enough rentals on hand to handle big groups and still not leave my non-​reservation making self. Not to mention the prices. I haven’t found another place up or down the coast that has them beat.
I wish I could remember the name of the nice man with the half pony tail that helped my nephew and I out, he was really fantastic and patient!
I enjoy paddling through and looking at all the yachts and houses, and as soon as I get off the board there is plenty to eat!

Very easy parking, Alex was super nice and helpful, the boards were comfy and we had an amazing time paddling around the harbor! We’ll definitely come back this summer! :)

We had an amazing time here the other day kayaking. We had some issues with Groupon, but the worker, Alex, was very kind in assisting with our reservation. We had great service and the views on the bay are beautiful. The company was not strict with time restraints, and parking was a piece of cake! All in all I certainly recommend this place to any and all future kayakers.

Had a great time! Danny was polite and helpful. Will come back again when we’re back in Newport!

We got the livingsocial deal to rent an electronic boat for 1.5 hours to go around Newport Harbor. The service was amazing. The boat was super clean. We will definitely come back again.

My friend and I love to paddle board and have always been so disappointed with the other rental companies around. They are either over priced, poor location, and horrible service… So I was amazed when coming here for the first time how amazing everything was.
The owner Tyler and his manager Alex were so hands on and helpful. They got our boards ready, made sure my clumsy but was all taken care of and even when I pulled up Tyler took my paddle and helped me on the doc– so sweet!
Not to mention the prices. They have the lowest cost rentals around so why would you pay more for less? You wouldn’t…

Awesome place to rent a Duffy! The boat attendant was really nice and helped explain everything, and helped us pick out a nice path that would bet use all of our time. I will be using this service again!

Went paddle boarding for the first time yesterday with my home girl. We had the best first experience ever thanks to alex! He was very helpful and friendly! Will be coming back with a group fersure!

I love how well the service was!
Alex helped us out and talked to us a little bit about the how-to’s but I loved how candid he was and his easy-​going personality!
We came on a slow day and he was very accommodating and let us know that he was okay with us coming back on our own time!
I really recommend this to someone who is looking for a good time when it comes to kayaking, boating, paddle boarding and want to find a place that sees your happiness as their number one priority!

Great spot to rent paddle boards around the Newport Harbor. Found this place using Groupon for $ 13 for 90 minutes. Staff is super friendly and since we came during the week day, they were very flexible on our return time. Park in the American junkie’s parking lot. Docking spot is very narrow and tight.

The customer service was great! We were about 15 minutes late and we were worried they’d cancel our appointment but they honestly didn’t care. They were really sweet in helping us sign our waivers and the young man was very helpful in teaching us how to maneuver on the board and how to row even though it was fairly easy to figure out. It was my second time paddle boarding and the last time I went to a different place, they weren’t as nice and these people actually helped me and my sister get on the board. We had a great time boarding and the employees were awesome. I’d see myself coming again with my siblings and recommend this place to anyone!

Amazing customer service! Before paddleboarding, I had bought a groupon online & had already made reservations for the next day. But it was FREEZING and SPRINKLING when I went… the site said I had to make a 24 hours cancellation, but when I asked if I could reschedule it for another day, the female worker said it’s perfectly okay! (CHECK WEATHER BEFORE GOING LOL)
There is a lot of room to paddleboard + it is really nice to look at the beach houses around the area. There isn’t much to say… just try it out!
I am definitely coming back (with a groupon) when the weather is right :)

First time renting a Duffy & it won’t be my last! Super easy to book online & the location is beautiful! Right behind American Junkie on the water. We were greeted by Harrison who was so helpful & great sense of humor. We left at 330 & we’re back at 530. It did get a little chilly when the sun was going down but we got to see Christmas lights & a beautiful sunset. We went with my family. But you can go with just about anyone & enjoy yourself!

I swear, sometimes I wonder about myself. Seriously. I’ve been looking for this place (to review and return) for over a year now and had no idea the name and/​or location of it. All that I was aware of was the fact that some place in Newport provided hourly boat and kayak rental (s) and was located behind a bar/​lounge of some sort.
Okay, so we located «Wayward» over a YEAR ago while celebrating the Memorial Day holiday weekend back in ‘2014.
We’d actually left home in a «wayward» sense and figured we’d wander aimlessly around Newport until we stumbled upon something that peaked our interest.
The booze specials next door at American Junkie did just that and after downing a few drinks we stumbled out nothing short of inebriated from their bottomless mimosa Sunday offer. Upon our doing so, we took notice of this place and figured, «Heyy now!!! Why not rent a boat for an hour or so???
For those reading, this place is amazing!!!
Hopefully there’s no law against boozing while boating because we did just that. For no more than 35 – 45 duckets, we were presented a boat that sat at least 8 – 10, mind you… there were only 2 of us, lol. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful.
They photographed us using an iPad… I invoiced them (because I don’t ever take pictures free of charge), they debriefed us on the «how to’s» and we were on our way.
In all truth, had we known in advance that we were able to, no doubt we’d have packed additional booze (probably wine or champagne) and goodies (fruit, shrimp or a charcuterie platter) for our «voyage to Atlantis» (it was only around the harbor, but still…).
I’m affording a definite added star for the boat’s possessing an auxiliary port to plug cell phones in and stream Pandora as you drift. Yupppp!,…that was us cruising around blaring 2Pac while scaring the white folk’ within their yachts! Sorry guys! Figured you could benefit from a little Makaveli.
Even funnier were the old couples dancing along to the beat while tossin’ their peace signs! Hahaha! I swear I love Southern California!!! This was a total scene from a music video or something!!!
We had an amazing time and even caught a few sea lions sunbathing!!! Now that I’ve «re-​located» this place, I think I’ll plan a prompt return. My b-day’s this Friday!
If anything, I now know to book the reservation in advance and/​or board the boat while sober.
