I ate in the restaurant once, it took a little longer for the food to come out and for us to get the bill. But the food is so good! We usually place an order for pick up, and the food is always great!

Don’t order online. I place an order at 6:35 and got at a confirmation that the order would be ready in 30 minutes. At 7:20 they claimed to have just received my order, despite the email confirmation. When I asked what took so long, the answer was«we are very busy tonight». Don’t ever make your problem, my problem. If I my credit card had not already been charged I would have walked away. Rude, poor service.

The place is tired. Very tired. Very spacious. And the food is good. Good service, and good food. Not the best indian I have eaten, but certainly worthy a try. I LOVED the shrimp pakora and the plump and not greasy meat samosas. Lamb dosa was a bit on the dry side but flavorful. Naan had that lovely chew, nice and warm. Their credit card system was down, and a sign kindly requested cash payment. Luckily it won’t break the bank. Cosmetics, being what they are, the place could use an overhaul and a cleaning — but you won’t come here for the décor… You’ll want to come for a meal that warms your tummy. And that it will do on a cool day!

Excellent selection of authentic Indian cuisine! High quality presentation and extremely comfortable seating and general ambiance. Bar and drink offerings could use a little updating.

After reading some of the posted reviews i went into the restaurant with high hopes. I was greeted with«What can i do for u?» Id like to sit down and have dinner was my response. The restaurant was about 1⁄3 full. We waited about 10 minutes before a waiter came over and provided us water and left the menu’s. About 10 minutes later we were still waiting for him to return. When he arrived he asked if we had made our selections yet. This wasn’t going well at all. We ordered and waited for our food to arrive. The curried mussels looked like a great appetizer. The four mussels arrived in a nice curry sauce. For 10 dollars i think they though they were selling me Oysters. My Tandoori Mixed Grill arrived 15 minutes later and it was cold. It evidently sat in the kitchen forgotten for some time before being brought to the table. The lamb was overcooked and dry. After finishing, we waited another 10 minutes and then i got up and asked the waiter for the check. Five minutes later he was seating a party beside us. I looked at him and requested the check once again and this time he brought it. I would have to say that those writing reviews for this place are either family or close friends. The food is mediocre at best. The service was poor. Perhaps Sunday evenings is a night off for regular staff? Visit at your own risk

Unexpected tasty dishes! Start with the mixed appetizers, get a bread basket and then start on the dishes — fish masala(with haddock), biriyani, and the special chicken sizzling(like a tikka masala sauce served on the side). Don’t forget a dosa! Masala dosa. And a glass of Chenin Blanc. Atmosphere could use a little love, but overall clean, friendly service and good prices.

Don’t bother going here if you’re young, they will treat you like crap. I went in hoping for good Indian food, and it was. When we had left overs they brought us containers and a bag and just dropped them at our table. I thought it was pretty, standard until the normally adult-aged couple next to us has their left over nearly packed and bagged by the SAME waiter that just dropped empty containers at our table. I will NEVER come here again. If you feel the need to discriminate, all I can hope for you is bankruptcy and unemployment.

I absolutely LOVE this place. At a lot of the Indian restaurants I’ve tried, I find that many of the dishes taste the same. Here, that is not the case. Everything has its own flavor, and everything is very fresh tasting. Servers are very pleasant as well. My favorites are the vegetarian thali and the chicken tikka masala… garlic naan is also a big hit with my family.

I would like to point out the first review I left for The Jewel in the Crown was back in 2012. Since then I have been living in NYC and have tried numerous Indian restaurant that have not, and probably will never surpass The j=Jewel in the Crown You can’t beat the wonderful customer service, the half price lunch menu and the absolutely fantastic cooking! My favorites: Chicken Tikka Masala Lamb Saag Aloo Parantha Basil Garlic Naan(specialty!) Other great options: Lamb Rogan Josh Lamb Korma Vegetarian Tikka Masala Vegetarian Samosas Butter Chicken that will melt in your mouth Don’t forget a side order of Raita! Also try the taj mahal or flying horse beer and stiff drinks from the bar.

Bad service. Was a slow night and waiter didn’t check on us once. Garlic naan was dry and not fully cooked. There were lumps of raw dough. Lamb curry was dry and bland and I couldn’t cut the meat with a knife let alone chew it. I told server and he said its supposed to be like that. Seriously??? The curry tasted only of tomatoes and no other spices. Rice was dry and almost chipped my tooth. Water tastes gross straight from tap and had a weird smell Location is good in downtown. But that all it has going for it.

One of my favorites in town. The staff is very pleasant and helpful. The food is excellent. We have been eating here and getting take out for years. Service is usually good but sometimes can be a bit sub-par. Food is always good quality The amount of spice is just right(can get food mild, medium, or hot). Even my Indian friends find the food very good. Variety of menu items from lamb to chicken to veggie favorites.

I LOVE Jewel in the crown. Everything I get always tastes super fresh, authentic, and simply amazing. I had never had Indian food before eating here, and this place got me hooked. Onion naan– DELICIOUS, the veggie ball dish with the velvet sauce– MOSTEPICTHINGEVER.

Went here Friday night for Valentines day, was really looking forward to trying this place with all great reviews. first of all I am a vegan so love Indian food as lots of options for me! Ordered drinks first and my boyfriend ordered a beer, beforehand he asked about the Indian beers and wanted a nice dark beer as he likes stoughts and hoppy but does not like light beers, so after a lengthy conversation with the waiter he gets a Flying horse, beer not knowing it’s Not dark and it’s a lager, which he doesn’t like nor ever drink! Bottle is opened already and waiter pours it and we both say this is Not a dark beer and he proceeded to tell us yes itbis n alcohol content is higher than other beers, no it’s 4% per bottle, we ask for different beer but No they won’t exchange it even though it was waiter whom said yes dark beer! So he drank a little less than a quarter of the bottle as it was also rancid as exp date was 11⁄13! Really? So we decide ok let’s just order our apps and me again being vegan and asking about the Veggie sampler app is told no meat and good choice for me, app comes out and it is the Meat app sampler!!! I took something that was chicken on my plate not knowing till I cut it open and my boyfriend states that is not veggies that is chicken called waiter back over and get blank stare as to why we have issues with Wrong app given to us! He says and I quote«what do you want me to do about it»!!! Uhmmm really? We ordered 1 thing and it wasn’t what we ordered! It had a veggie somosa on it and a potato pancake so he says it has 2 veggies on it!!! It Wasn’t What We Ordered! So we decide to just keep it as we are Not going to get our original order we can see so I ate the 2 veggie items that actually were not even flavorful! We decided to not order dinner and head over to another place if we can as we new 1. We would Not get what we ordered 2. Food wasn’t even good 3. We were disgusted with lack of service in getting our order wrong and not even correcting it! To top it off they then change bill to reflect the meat app We Did Not Order n had audacity to charge the 2 bucks more for something we Never wanted to begin with nor offered to take off bill or half price! We didn’t even finish it as I couldn’t eat anything but 2 things on it and we were disgusted by the lack of service and just wanted to leave! So I would Never go back to this place but instead go to the other Indian place not too far from this one! WORST Service, food and Experience I have ever had in any restaurant hands down! If you want decent Indian in Newburyport Don’t go here try Mr. India instead! Wish we had actually gone there instead of trying a new place! Never got our dinner as most places were filled up we tried! I would give No stars if I could!

If there were no stars on Unilocal!I would rate it just that. This restaurant was by far one of the worst food experiences I have ever incurred. Dirty ripped pillows on the banquettes, uncovered chutneys sitting out on the table, raw chicken, over cooked tandoori shrimp(with cheese on it), old stuck together basmati rice. I was so beyond sad and disappointed with this experience. It was an expensive mistake.

I had an excellent experience here for lunch on a weekday. I usually get take out and have always been impressed with the food, however, the service when dining in was also superior to most restaurants even in Boston during lunch time. The food was perfect and well presented. It came out in perfect timing throughout the lunch. The servers were extremely friendly, attentive and inviting. I enjoyed the minimal but pleasant décor and lack of televisions. The music was nice and perfectly in the background. I had the Chicken Tikka Masala lunch special which was a great value and plenty of food. I also had Vegetable Pakora and an order of Naan. I was shocked the bill was so low! It was a filling, excellent quality meal at fast food prices. I’ve had many of the dinner sized portions for take out and have always been pleased by this restaurant. I’ve never been disappointed by the food. I usually have leftovers with the dinner portions, especially with an appetizer and Naan. I highly recommend this restaurant if you get a craving for Indian cuisine and you’re in the area.

I have been here twice, once for lunch and recently for dinner before a play at the Firehouse. Both occasions the food was well prepared, interestingly spiced and plentiful. Service was warm and welcoming, if a bit on the quirky side, but in a pleasant way. We were never sure what the junior waiter was saying, although he certainly wasn’t shy about it. And when we noted to the host that we had received two different versions of the daily specials he just agreed with us and said that one was more accurate than the other. Hmmm. Naan was hot, appetizers and entrees tasty, even the raita was top notch. And they had a nice selection of wine by the glass, which you don’t always find in Indian restaurants. I wouldn’t hestitate to dine at the Jewel again anytime I was hungry in Newburyport.

I’ve either had a great experience here or an absolutely terrible one. It changes with the wind. My first time in was great. The staff is always friendly and it’s tucked away off the main drag and quiet inside. No blaring TV’s or music make it a great date or hangout spot. The food was very good The muligatawny and crown mixed appetizers are a great way to sample or start your meal. Keema and chicken curries were favorite entrees. My last trip in with a group of 5, we were essentially thrown into a very tight corner table and forgotten about during a Saturday night dinner service. We waited for the waiter to take out order for 15 minutes and the food took almost 70 minutes to come out during which time we had to go find the waiter to even refill our water. The food was terrible. Between the 5 in our party we had overcooked lamb, undercooked chicken tandoori, a few mixed tandoori grills where some things were overcooked and others undercooked, obviously having been not cooked together. No apologies were given, they didn’t even ask how the food was at any point after it was brought and we again had to chase down the check at the end. One bad service can certainly ruin a place for a customer and the last time there was so bad that’s exactly what happened. I will be going to Mr. India from now on(you should too) as it’s better food and even a bit more affordable. There are far too many other quality restaurants in Newburyport to recommend this place to anyone or to bother coming back myself.

Great service, awesome meal! I had chicken saag and my partner had saag paneer. Both were delicious(they’re almost the same thing anyway!) They have an extensive naan menu. We opted for the basil-garlic. Very good! Too bad we just found this gem because we’re moving to Seattle soon. I imagine we’d frequent this place often!
