We were craving barbecue brisket, so we decided to check out Sossy’s bbq. We browsed the menu, ordered, paid, got a couple of barbecue sauces from the sauce bar, then found a seat. The service was just ok. We were not greeted as we walked in, but the cashier was helpful in answering our questions about the menu. I expected more from the food. The brisket sandwich was a bit dry and lacked flavor. It seemed better with the spicy barbecue sauce. The pulled pork was better than the brisket, it was moist. The chips and the chili cheese fries were the only items we liked. Maybe this was an off night. I will give them a second chance and try other items on the menu.

Came to Sossy’s this past weekend for the first time with my family after we were all craving BBQ. Very convenient location and ample parking. I opted for the pulled pork sandwich which came with seasoned chips and your choice of sides(so many good options!) but I decided to try the mac n cheese. We had been working at our house all day on projects and boy did this hit the spot. Great family run restaurant and wonderful staff. The pulled pork sandwich was excellent and they have this great«sauce» bar where you can pick out which ones you want to use. I loved every sauce I tried! Great price point as well. We will definitely be back!

I’ve been here several times after it first opened and the customer service and quality of food held a pretty high standard then. However, the last few times I went it has been quite the opposite. While I was waiting for the cashier to take my order, several staff members just looked at us and not even a «hello, I’ll be right with you» as expected from any proper establishment. Then the cashier comes and greets me and I started to ask him which meats were best that day. He couldn’t really answer and recommended pulled pork and beef brisket. I thought it was going to be really good then. What a disappointment. Nothing was really fresh except the cole slaw and garlic bread maybe. The pulled pork was dry but somewhat tender and the beef brisket was worse. Beef brisket is supposed to be very soft and tender, this was at least a day or two old. Just garbage. The only part I enjoyed was my beer, at least they got that part right but the food should be great to make it even more enjoyable. What happened Sossy’s? Your quality has fallen off big time, you guys used to be a great place to enjoy BBQ. I will not return and will be going to Billy D’z to get my BBQ fix and sacrifice drinking beer out of plastic cups there.

We have a Ventura County Axxcess card and decided to try Sossy’s. It was our first time using the card there so we should have received one meal free but instead got 10% off. It being our first time I didn’t realize that the sandwich I ordered came with chips so I ordered fries. The meal was ok, meat was a little dry. My husband ordered half a bbq chicken and was not able to eat the breast portion because it was so dry. We wouldn’t recommend Sossy’s.

Smelled Ranch Hand nearby which got me craving bbq. Decided I wanted to try a new place, so I looked on Unilocal for highly rated barbecue joints nearby. We ended up here. My daughter got the macaroni and cheese kids meal, my son got the cheeseburger kids meal, and I got the two item combo with chicken and tri tip. When I first noticed was that the guy at the counter was almost unintelligible. I had to have him repeat things several times for me to hear his low-talking, strong accented speech. The other guy behind the counter looked unfriendly, too; I looked at him and smiled, and he just gave me the stink eye. We waited a really long time for our food. Just as we all became restless, wondering what the holdup was, it arrived. The first thing I noticed was that the french fries were way overcooked to the point of being brown and hollow. My daughter tried her macaroni and cheese and declared that it tasted like barbecue, which she hates, so she would not eat it. My son said his cheeseburger was hard and leathery, and extremely greasy. My chicken and tri-tip were ok, but nothing spectacular. The only bright spot to our visit was the girl who may have been a manager. She came out once and asked another table how everything was going, and she offered to clean up our table after we left and said she hoped we had a good evening. Long story short, we won’t be back.

For first timers, this place is great. It’s a hidden gem really. We enjoyed a brisket sandwich with added peppers and onions, a side of Mac and cheese and coleslaw, and a pulled pork sandwich. The pulled pork was better in my opinion but both great options. Their décor is spot on and they’ve really turned the place around from Burger Express(it’s former occupant). All I can say is there’s some stiff bbq competitors in Newbury Park and this place is up there.

I really like Sossy’s, it feels like I was invited to a good friend’s backyard bbq… the food is simple, solid, and unpretentious. The ribs are pretty tasty, the sauces are great, and the sides are outstanding. The potato salad is so yummy! I must say that portions are small and prices are pretty high but we understand that this is a mom n’ pop place so we deal with it. It’s a great place for weeknight family dinners… our kids love this place.

Came here for lunch since I was in the area for work. I really liked it. It was my cheat meal and I wanted to make it count! I got the 2 pick which I picked baby back ribs and bbq chicken. The ribs I really liked. Nothing is worse than a dry as hell rib. These were moist and lots of flavor. The chicken was good not incredible. Their collards were ok and my sweet potato fries were good. I loved all my choices for bbq sauce. I need that control in my life!

This place is not bad is not too bad for this area. The pull pork is good, the tri-tip is a little bit dry. However, I do like that they are not stingy on their sauces. There’s a lot of sauces bottles for you to pick and choose to go with your taste. Do give it a try if you craving for some BBQ meat

Sorry Sossy’s, but you’re really falling off your game. I’ve been a loyal customer since you opened and have posted many pictures and posts on Instagram/Facebook promoting your restaurant and my favorite items on your menu; the brisket sandwich, but the last 3 times I’ve come to eat dinner I’ve left very disappointed. — The first disappointment was that you now only offer brisket on Thursday and Sunday, So I ordered a half rack of ribs. The ribs were rally burnt and dry; not to mention cold. They looked like they were from the day before and just reheated on the grill. — The second disappointment were the beans; they looked and tasted like they came right out of the can; just like Van Kamps Pork and Beans. — The third disappointment came last night. 5 of us went in for dinner at around 7pm. We were the only ones in the restaurant and it was about 85* inside. I ordered the Large Tri-Tip sandwich with a side of fries. I was quite surprised when I picked up my sandwich and it was not a sliced Tri-Tip; but chopped. It was dry and flavorless; so dry that I had to get one of the small sauce cups put the whole cup of BBQ sauce on it. It was also just warm, not hot. This was most likely a piece of meat that was cooked a day or two before I really want to continue supporting your restaurant, but after these issues I don’t think I’ll be back. I just keep loosing confidence in the food being served.

I woke up craving BBQ, and I remembered a friend of mine telling me I had to try this place, so I did and it was Amazing. I had a brisket sandwich with potato salad and coleslaw. Everything was on point. They have a wide variety of BBQ sauces you can try and the place is clean and very welcoming. I’ll definitely be back!

Pretty good. I ordered three meat combo. Tri tip, chicken and ribs. Great flavor and great service. Lots of sauces to choose from. Love the sauce names, rattlesnake and scorpion. A bit of a kick to those. I will be back when I come to town again.

We just went back to give it another try, asked for a grilled cheese sandwich for my son and once more they had no bread. We just turned around and walked out it’s definitely disappointing to deal with the same issue two times in a row.

Pleasantly surprised Who doesn’t like a good piece of meat? I came here by a friend’s recommendation and was very pleased. Overall: Simply delicious. Leaves one feeling good, rather than heavy and bloated. I shared the large tri tip sandwich along with a side of Mac n’ Cheese and collard greens accompanied by a fresh side of potato chips. Food: Everything was fresh and tasty. I sampled all of the sauces and found i loved the citrus Chipotle mixed with the Mexipotle best, I even put some on my Mac n’ Cheese(great combination). The bread used for the trip tip was soft to the bite and the collard greens were surprisingly good as well. Price: Decent; Considering that a majority of the menu items are higher in value(I learned that the food is prepped everyday) I thought it was a healthy alternative to fast food. Décor: I loved all the different styles of light fixtures, very fun. Booths are comfy too. Ambiance: Nice casual feel. Concept: Love the idea of the«Soss» bar, really creative. By tenderizing the meat but leaving it simple enough for one to decorate it however they like is great. I’m not the biggest fan of sweet barbecue sauce, so having the«Soss» bar really made a difference. Whether I’m watching calories or want more spice in my meat, Sossy’s is a great place to check out and hang out.

Hubby and I were looking for a casual place to eat with our two kids. We stumbled upon this place and so glad we did. I got a regular size shredded chicken with grilled onions and peppers($ 1 extra). Hubby got large tri tip with fries. My toddler got the kids burger with fries. Then we walked over to the sauce counter were we sampled a few sauces before settling on 3 each. Everything was so good! Warm, flavorful and just delicious! We all loved our dinner and went home satisfied. Thanks for a no frills dinner we were all able to enjoy :)

I was excited to give this place a try based on other Unilocal recommendations, as we LOVEBBQ and always want to support our local spots. However, I should have gone with my gut instinct to not try the place when there was a window sticker of only five-star Unilocal reviews posted on the window. In my opinion, a restaurant that has fabulous food and service shouldn’t have to advertise select Unilocal ratings on their front window(I am talking a full page sticker with detailed reviews that looked like a page directly from the app — it was huge, not just the typical Unilocal sticker). This is a counter order restaurant with no table service. There is an outdoor patio with a few tables, as well as both tables and booths in the restaurant but it is on the smaller side overall. I ordered the tri-tip which was served lukewarm and had absolutely no «pink» color to it(look at their website of the folded tri-tip and imagine it being brownish gray through and through). It was so dry that you were forced to use BBQ sauce to give the meat enough moisture to choke it down. The presentation of the folded over slices of tri-tip was also very unappetizing — I wish I would have taken a photo! Without BBQ sauce, the tri-tip completely lacked flavor. For my side I ordered the garlic mashed potatoes; first, they were overpriced for the serving size I received and second the texture and flavor were so bad that after two bites I tossed the rest — and I LOVE mashed potatoes!!! I will say my grilled pineapple was decent, but it is pretty hard to mess up a fruit that is already delicious with or without grilling. My husband order the ½ rack of pork ribs, and they too were dry and lacked BBQ flavor. He LOVES ribs and true BBQ and his statement was he could make better ribs at home — perhaps we could open a restaurant and get high Unilocal ratings :) I wish we would have know both of our«platters» included garlic bread with our meals, as we would not have ordered an additional side of garlic bread for two of us(another overpriced item for what you get). As for the beer selection, it was average at best and not geared toward a craft beer lover. I mean who doesn’t want a nice craft beer with their BBQ? Tapped were 805, Shock Top, Stella, etc. The only«craft» beer was Figourea Mountain Hoppy Poppy. Overall, I would not recommend this place, especially given the number of places that have great tri-tip. Even the chain restaurants have better BBQ than this and I don’t consider those true BBQ restaurants.

The staff here was nice, friendly, & helpful, the restaurant is cozy & clean but the food was a bit subpar. We got a half slab of ribs(they only have pork ribs no beef) the brisket place, Mac & cheese, & they had a special for their two year anniversary where you get 3 free sliders with your order so we got a tri tip, brisket, & pulled pork slider. The ribs were a lot bigger than I expected or have ever seen for pork ribs, they were so tender the meat fell right off the bone. The ribs were good but nothing that really stood out as excellent tasting BBQ. The creamy macaroni was good but you get a small amount considering the price for premium sides. The brisket plate I got was disappointing, for $ 9 I got a small amount of meat that was really dry & flavorless. The same went for the sliders, I couldn’t tell the difference between the brisket & the tri tip, the pulled pork slider & the other hand was pretty good. I tried a few of the sauces, the scorpion & chipotle were very good, the Memphis sweet & some of the others just tasted slightly different versions of regular BBQ sauce. My friend that I came with really likes this place so if I was in the area again I’d probably give it another chance in hopes that I just came on an off day & that everyone else’s reviews were right about how good this place is.

I had lunch here today and really enjoyed my pulled pork wrap. I got the regular size and I might call it the ladies size because it was perfect for me but a big guy probably would have felt it too little. They have a larger size though so guys, I recommend you go for the large. Anyway it came with lettuce by default but I got cole slaw substituted and it was super tasty, but leaky as all hell and got sauce all over my hands and even though I was being very careful, on my lap too. It was the cole slaw. I saw other people getting the pulled pork sandwiches and they weren’t drippy. I hate messy food so I’m not sure if I’ll get that again, but the taste was spot on and the pulled pork was tender and lean. A little more plain than some other places I’ve been to around here, but very nice and I think Sossy’s kind of expects you to add sauces at their generous condiment table rather than sauce it up before you get it. Great employees and quick service. Great job all around!

This is a great little gem in Newbury Park. The pulled pork(their specialty) was so tender and flavorful. Even thought they have an excellent selection of BBQ sauces it does not need any sauce. Their Mac n Cheese is very gourmet and incredible. The kids love of and could not get enough. The old wood décor is really cool and even cooler knowing that it is from an actual old barn in Wisconsin. Thanks for a great meal we will definitely be back. Lastly try the chocolate chip cookie. Yummy
