This is a new-ish café that is nestled back in an out-of-the-way location that makes it quite hard to notice: on Chapel street, just behind Main street, set back from the street, behind a parking lot in a plaza of stores that most people don’t realize exists. There is parking in the lot for this place, but the plaza fills up during busy hours, and sometimes you need to park on the street in metered parking. The people who work here are very friendly. The atmosphere is very pleasant inside, but it faces out onto a parking lot – not the most pleasant view. This place looks like a coffee shop but doesn’t really function as a coffee shop. It’s more of a café /restaurant. No wireless and not really cozy enough to hang out here – it seems that the owners haven’t engineered this place to be a place where people camp out… which I think is a shame because whenever I’ve been here it’s been virtually empty, and I’d imagine that getting more people in the door, even if they stay for a few hours and don’t buy much, might make the place more lively which could make it more popular. This place also sells some fairly high-end gourmet foods to take home. The selection and pricing, however, isn’t anything that really grabbed my attention: nothing that I’m itching to get my hands on that I can’t buy elsewhere, nor anything that struck me as a great deal either. Why only three stars? The food here is good, but in my opinion, a bit expensive for a little café that faces a parking lot, and also, while it’s good, it’s not outstanding. Also, I’m a tea drinker and, while this place stocks the excellent Harney & Sons tea, they’ve often been out or understocked when I’ve been here. I would like to see this place succeed but I think the owners need to do a little tweaking. Just walking in the door, it’s not 100% apparent what sort of economic niche this place is attempting to fill. And although this place is nice, it doesn’t really stand out in any particular niche, in my opinion.

We tried out the Sugar Rush Café on a Saturday morning for a late breakfast getting a jelly doughnut, a tuscan omelette and an egg, bacon, and cheese breakfast sandwich on cibatta. Of the dishes, the breakfast sandwich was by far the best tasting and the best deal — the doughnut was nothing special and the tuscan omelette(chicken strips, roasted red peppers, and cheese) was underseasoned and bland. The service was friendly(owner’s kids took our orders) but incredibly slow. It took a solid 15 minutes to get our food and we were the only patrons in the store at that time — excusable in a busy lunch-rush situation but seemed excessive so early in the day.
